Shoshone - Tecopa - Dispersed

Accessible via a dirt and gravel road that accommodates both sedans and large RVs, this dispersed camping area spreads across BLM land near the Nevada border. The road extends roughly 1.5 miles from the main access point, with multiple pull-off spots spaced far apart along the route. Campers can choose from sites at various distances, with some reviewers noting decent cell service about a mile in.

The area attracts rock hounds and mineral collectors, with white opals and chalcedony deposits scattered throughout the rocky terrain. "This is a great place to dig for white opals," notes Eric F., who explains that dry creek beds offer the best tent camping spots due to the rocky ground conditions. Several sites feature existing fire rings built from local stones, though the rocky surface makes air mattresses essential for comfortable sleeping.

Wind conditions vary significantly and can become intense, particularly on exposed sites away from hills. Coyotes howl at night, adding to the desert soundscape. The concrete slab mentioned by reviewers provides a level option for campervans, while the surrounding hills rise 15 to 30 feet in some areas. Dark skies offer clear stargazing, though the glow from Las Vegas remains visible on the horizon.

Tecopa Hot Springs sits across the road from the camping area, with dump facilities available for $10. The small town of Tecopa provides basic dining options within a few miles. "Wind can be brutal, but stars are stunning," observes Caroline P.. Visitors often highlighted the spacious, level sites and excellent privacy in this true dispersed camping area. Many mentioned the complete lack of amenities and challenging wind conditions that require preparation.

Nice, easy, and lots of options

We didn’t make it all the way to the pin, because there were at least 10 spots before we chose one. Good road, we had a camper van but saw RV that did fine. Very level spots, great view of desert/mountains, good stars (though you can see the glow of Vegas). Spotty but decent Verizon coverage

Death Valley Adjacent BLM

The dirt road you turn onto has several areas from the first quarter of a mile that can accommodate several vehicles if necessary. Easy to find spots anywhere along the route unless you want to head all the way to the actual sites (I didn’t go that far, so not sure what the campsite looks like).

Furnace Creek Wash Road.

Make note of the name of my review. There is another road in the area called Furnace Creek, but this is the Wash road. This is a great spot for peace and quiet. The mountains are beautiful and there's plenty of space at each spot and between spots. Big rigs can easily come here. We tow a 33' 5th wheel and had no issues. Tecopa Spring is across the road and there are dump facilities for $10. Great dark sky at night.

Quiet, Peaceful & Private

A great quiet and peaceful place - a smooth dirt/gravel road that was easy to navigate with a little car.

There were pull off spots, basically individual camp sites for each person. There were others camping, too, including RVs and camper vans. They were nearby but not visible. We drove back in until we came to an empty spot.

Quiet and peaceful all night. Great flat area for setting up the tent. Low cell signal, but consistently available.

Great location not too far from Death Valley NP

Great location! I came on a Thursday night, and there was only one other camper. I drove in about 1.5 miles and had decent cell signal. I towed my teardrop n with no issues. Very well marked spots with fire pits. Very level too. Super quiet and peaceful. I did not experience any wind and even flew my drone.

BLM Delight!

This campground is only minutes from a hot spring! We enjoyed the quiet. The coordinates listed take you far back on the road when this may not be needed. A little wind but comfortable in the tent. This goes along a dirt road but a sedan can take it. Our site had a fire ring built from rocks! Felt very safe.

On the way out of the park…

Dispersed camping. We came on a weekday afternoon and had a great time. Drove about a mile and a quarter back the road and found a couple really good spots. I’m sure you could go back further.

Wind was WICKED! Bring a kite.

Wide open space

Plenty of space for privacy spread out over the plateau and 360 degree views if you follow the road up the hill. No amenities, but since there's a cell tower at the edge of the plateau there is decent service. Wind can be brutal, but stars are stunning. There are a few sandy patches on the lower part of the road, but my promaster didn't have any problems. Felt very safe when I was there.

Very nice

Easy to drive road, no amenities but the views & privacy, lots of open space & quiet

Wind during the night was a little crAzy so recommended to park closer to a hill versus being out in the open.

Rock Hounding Dreams?

This is a great place to dig for white opals! I come here several times a year to dig for opals and search for other rock, there is a ton of chalcedony in this area which I like. The dirt roads are okay but not great as far as how rough they are, but you don't have to have a 4x4 so that's good. There's quite a few spots and they are spaced far apart, I've seen a wide range of camping setups, I tent camp so I tend to look for dry creak beds, this area is pretty rocky so air mattresses are your friend.

In the deeper areas of old river beds the hills will be 15-30ft tall, look for a dark green/gray line and when you find whites spots that's where the opals are, you can chip away and find decent sized veins of white opal. When you get them wet you will see blue, red, green and yellow amongst other colors.

This is dispersed camping so there are no amenities to speak of, but there is a small town of Tecopa near by with a few small places to eat. There are also hot springs in this area follow the signs they are everywhere, be forewarned that foreigners come into this area as well and tend to go into the hot springs nude. There is another camp close to the hot springs that has amenities if that's what you like.

Boondock delight!

Ash Meadows is a treasure and though no camping is within the actual preserve, BLM land surrounds the place and plenty of spaces to camp and explore. There is a concrete slab near this site that is perfect for a campervan like ours. Was level with no breaks. No fire ring or remnants or an old one and we were hesitant to light one with the dry season here. The road to Longstreet cabin is rough, rough, rough. Go slow and the car will be alright even if not 4X4, you'll be glad you did. The trails are almost all raised wood to protect the area. Easy hike, wheelchair friendly (very wide paths). Tecopa is nearby as well as amargosa with the most lovable opera house in the USA. Lots of little critters around and some coyotes heard howling at night. A great campsite for the hardcore camping enthusiast
