Best Campgrounds near Jonesboro, AR

The Jonesboro area in northeastern Arkansas contains several established campgrounds, including Craighead Forest Park and Lake Frierson State Park. Camping options range from tent-only primitive sites to RV-compatible locations with full hookups, as well as cabin accommodations at select state parks such as Crowley's Ridge and Lake Poinsett. Most campgrounds are situated within a 30-mile radius of downtown Jonesboro, with the largest concentration of developed sites found along Crowley's Ridge geological formation, offering both forest and lake environments. Several mixed-use campgrounds provide both tent and RV sites, with Craighead Forest Park serving as the closest developed camping area to city services.

Seasonal considerations affect campground availability throughout the year, though most facilities in the region operate year-round. Many campgrounds require reservations, particularly during summer weekends when waterfront sites fill quickly. Winter camping remains viable with generally mild temperatures, though occasional cold fronts can bring freezing conditions. Road access to most camping areas consists of paved or well-maintained gravel surfaces suitable for standard vehicles. Cell coverage is generally reliable at established campgrounds, with stronger signals at locations closer to Jonesboro. Electrical hookups are available at all state park campgrounds and most RV-specific sites, while primitive camping offers fewer amenities. A visitor to Craighead Forest Park noted, "Beautiful relaxing place. I'm a fan of dispersed camping yet this was still private even for a campground. Nice bathhouses with laundry. Individual campsite trash cans."

Several campgrounds feature waterfront locations with lake access, creating popular destinations for fishing and paddling activities. Craighead Forest Park provides a 2.4-mile trail around its lake, along with multiple playgrounds and recreational facilities that appeal to families with children. According to reviews, the park "has approximately 15 miles of mountain bike trails intertwined in the forest" and offers free firewood at campsites. Tent campers have access to both primitive and developed sites, with varying levels of privacy. Some campgrounds like Lakeview RV Resort cater specifically to RVs with concrete pads and full hookups. Noise levels vary considerably between locations, with highway-adjacent sites experiencing traffic sounds while forest-based campgrounds offer quieter environments. Developed campgrounds typically provide shower facilities, laundry services, and trash collection, with Lake Frierson and Lake Charles state parks adding amenities like camp stores and boat rentals.

    Nice clean park

This campground had 3 full hookup sites that were fairly level. Looks like they adding 5 more sites. The bathrooms are good with multiple stalls and flushing toilets. We had to call because electric not working when we arrived. They showed up within minutes to turn breaker on. All was well after that. Site 2. Playground for kids.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Great family vacation campground

One of the largest campgrounds in the state. weekends fill up fast with local families, enjoying the campground with their kids and dogs. Lots of bike riding trails as well as trails for people that bring their horses for the horse camp section. Sites are fairly close together. Camp is well maintained and has a great visitors center with friendly staff.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Quiet and Relaxing

This place is very beautiful and DEEP into to woods. The sites are very spread out with privacy though and we loved that!

We arrived after hours and our site had a pamphlet with our name and some basic information for our stay.

In the morning, the spot was very beautiful and tucked away in the woods with visibility to the lake down the hill.

It rained briefly and our spot was down a slight hill so there was a bit of concern with puddling, but there was proper drainage and the site didn’t puddle as much as we would’ve thought! The site was very leveled!

We lost service about 5/10 minutes out from the park with Verizon so if there are things you need to search before do that!

When we left we stopped by the visitor center that had a pretty wide range of things to do with a gift store. The staff and rangers were very nice!

    We would visit again!

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Really nice, quiet CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 50 for 1 night in mid September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, as are the sites. The sites themselves all seemed pretty level. The CG was very quiet and peaceful and about half full while we were there. Our site, 50, was a pull-through, as were several, but most were back in. There is some shade depending on the site. The bathhouses are showing their age a bit.

AT&T coverage was basically nonexistent with 1 bar of 5GE service but 0 MB/s of throughput. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 13 MB/s.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Good rest for weary travelers!

Arrived after hours to Campsite area A (sites 1-41). Note: reservation app does was not allow same day reservations, so find "available" site and pay at kiosk at visitor center. Hard to see park at night but in the morning found clean restrooms and shower --a happy find. Park offers nice large sites for tent and RVs with power, water, picnic table & fire rings. Really nice campgrounds with golf and equestrian facilities near by.

    Green's Quiet Acre

    Great spot

Stayed at Green’s Quiet Acre and couldn’t be happier. The lot was clean, level, and had full hookups. Quiet, safe location with easy access to town. Owner was friendly and made everything simple. Definitely recommend if you’re passing through or need a long-term spot.

Guide to Jonesboro

Camping spots near Jonesboro, Arkansas tend to be situated along the unique Crowley's Ridge geological formation, with elevations rising 200-550 feet above the surrounding Mississippi River Delta plains. This creates distinctive camping environments with forests, lakes, and wildlife not typically found in northeastern Arkansas. Winter temperatures in the region can drop below freezing but rarely stay there long, making year-round camping viable with proper preparation.

What to do

Hiking trails for all levels: Lake Charles State Park offers multiple trail options for nature exploration. "The trails had interesting bridges and a suspension bridge. Moderate to strenuous," notes a camper who enjoyed the variety of terrain features.

Paddling opportunities: At Davidsonville Historic State Park Campground, visitors can rent paddle boats for exploring the lake. "Has paddle boats, lake to fish, boat ramp to Black River, newly updated campgrounds with all the hookups," reports one reviewer who found multiple water activities available.

Mountain biking: The trail system at Craighead Forest Park provides excellent biking terrain. A visitor mentioned, "Great pad & hook ups. Shower & laundry is clean and nice. Beautiful lake, mtb & and walking trails better than most places."

Golf course access: Village Creek State Park offers an unusual amenity for campers - access to a golf course. As one reviewer describes, "The golf course here is really nice, hiking trails good as well."

What campers like

Clean bathhouses: Facilities at Lake Poinsett State Park Campground receive consistent praise. "Staff were extremely nice. Campground is clean. Bathrooms and showers are clean and well maintained," notes a visitor who appreciated the upkeep.

Free firewood: Some parks offer unexpected amenities. A Craighead Forest Park visitor mentioned, "Staff is so friendly and place is so clean and nice. Free fire wood and trash pickup at your site!"

Privacy between sites: While site spacing varies between parks, Crowley's Ridge State Park Campground offers good separation. "Our site was huge, enough room for several tents. There was a trail directly behind our site and another trailhead at the very back of the campground area," according to one camper who enjoyed the spaciousness.

Fishing access: Lake Charles State Park provides good fishing opportunities directly from camping areas. A camper noted, "Some of the waterfront sites in C area need more shade. We stayed in site 78 which was water view but not waterfront."

What you should know

Bug protection required: Insect repellent is essential, especially in warmer months. A camper at Crowley's Ridge warned, "The only thing negative I can say is the mosquitos come out at dark and are pretty bad so bring your mosquito spray."

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between parks. At Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, "It's good, not great. Proximity to Memphis was a plus, however, we had 0 service anywhere near our campsite."

RV site levelness: Not all sites provide level ground for larger rigs. A visitor to Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park observed, "We watched a super long RV struggle to back into their site, so I wouldn't recommend this campground to RVs that require pull through sites."

Reservation considerations: Many parks fill quickly during peak seasons. At Lake Poinsett, a camper noted, "Every site was booked but not crowded. Had a wonderful time fishing and hiking the 1.3 mile trail."

Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Davidsonville Historic State Park offers family-friendly facilities. A reviewer mentioned the park "has paddle boats, lake to fish, boat ramp to Black River, newly updated campgrounds with all the hookups, playground for the kiddos, plenty of trails."

Swimming opportunities: Designated swimming areas provide recreation options. At Village Creek State Park Campground, "There is a small swimming area for campers only, but this lake is not great for swimming as it is pretty muddy."

Kid-friendly activities: Parks often provide specific amenities for children. A Craighead Forest Park visitor shared, "Several different playgrounds and walking trails! Great fishing and even a splash pad for the kids to enjoy!"

Multiple recreation options: Lake Charles State Park combines various activities. "The swim area and the kayak and canoe rentals were closed (again because they did not have enough staff sitting around doing nothing)," noted one reviewer, suggesting that when properly staffed, the park offers diverse recreation.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for size: Davidsonville Historic State Park offers accommodations for larger rigs. "We had a 50amp FHU site and were able to get our 44' 5th wheel in site #2, which allowed us a lovely view of the lake," reported one RVer.

Hookup variability: Available connections differ between parks and sites. A visitor to Lake Charles mentioned, "There was water, electric and sewer hookups in Area C only. Areas A and B had electric and water."

Leveling considerations: Some sites require additional preparation. At Village Creek, "It almost looks like major erosion has occurred since these sites were first built - at every site in this loop, the picnic table and fire ring are IN the woods, and often partway down a ravine."

Dump station access: Not all parks with RV sites have dump stations. A Lake Poinsett camper advised, "Sites were not the fartherest apart, but each was very spacious. Large level gravel sites with water, but no sewer."
