Heber Springs

Despite that, I’ll just say that I love the town of Heber Springs which is located on the Lake. Area Code It may be because I have so many memories in Heber from my time in college so I should drop that disclaimer.

Nice campground, but not big rig friendly due to unlevel sites. Camp host was great in trying to accommodate us. Had place to ourselves during the week. Weekends busy with locals.

Heber Springs Campground is basically in down town Heber Springs.

Directions from Heber Springs go 2.5 miles west on SR 110, then north 1/2 mile north to park entrance.  If you put in the address, at least with our gps it did not take you to the park gate, just keep going.

Wide well paved streets and well maintained.  Grass was manicured and general upkeep being done.  Very nice playground for children ages 5 - 12 with recommended adult supervision.  Large clean bath houses.  Sites are wooded with pads being maintained with most being level.  A lot of beautiful water sites and people were able to tether boats at site.  Not sure if they are able to leave them in the water overnight.  Most of the sites are sites that I would call "Double Sites.  There is a massive boat launch area.  One of the largest I have seen and an equally large parking area for vehicles and boat trailers.  The lake encompasses 30,000 acres of crystal clear water.  The state of Arkansas is known as "The Natural State" and what better example than here.

The town of Heber Springs has so much to offer and this campground is just a part of the package.  While on the lake you have so many options on the lake, fishing, pontoon boats, kayaks, SUP, skiing, scuba diving and the list goes on.  If you plan to fish take your pick, walleye, bass, crappie, catfish, and trout.  Fly fish or cast, I'm sure you can even pole fish if you want.  Fishing tournaments are held through out the year.  Guide or private, kayak or boat.  Take your pick.  

Not only are you able to enjoy the water but you will be able to find many other pursuits to keep you busy.

• Golfing  You will find a championship 18 hole golf course which is reported to be the prettiest in Arkansas.  There is a country club with a course and there is even a 18 hole disc golf course.
• Restaurants abound so you will be able to find just about anything to suit all taste buds.
• Hiking  you will find the Buckeye National Nature Trail, downstream from the dam  The Collins Creek located at the Collins Creek Recreation Area.  The Josh Park Memorial Trail located at the Dam Site Park.  Mossy Bluff National Nature Trail which follows a beautiful wooded bluff over looking the Little Red River below the dam.  On this trail you will see two different types of trees that have grown together and Arkansas even has their version of a "balanced rock".  The Sugar Loaf Mountain Nature Trail is accessible by boat from Highway 337 at the Sugar Loaf Recreation Area
• If you are lucky enough to be in the area during the colder months you must check out the Majestic Trumpter Swans.  They return back to the area every year with their numbers growing.  It is quite a sight to see and hear.  Ask a local about the trumpter swans and they will be able to tell you how to get out to Magness Lake which is east of Heber Springs.  They return to Magness Lake which is a 30 acre oxbow lake near the Little Red.  This truly is an amazing sight as this is the largest population of trumpter swans in the southeast United States.  Birding is alive and well in this area and keep a lookout for the truly majestic bald eagle.
• Another little tidbit is that Heber Springs was know as the location of a health spa.  In a small city park you can still find the remains of "Seven Natural Springs.  Names given to the springs White Sulfphur, Arsenic Chaybeate, Iron Freestone, Red Sulphur, Saltpeter Magnesium Powder, Eye Spring and Black Sulphur.  The springs have been capped but some still produce and remain in use.

So laid back or active you will find it in the Greers Ferry Heber Springs area.

This is a perfect place on the lake. Out of the way, but still very close to stores and restaurants.

I often distinguish in my reviews the places I find preferable for families and those I think are better for people with no kids. I didn’t think about this until I started camping with my 3 boys, all currently under 4. Greers Ferry Lake is one of those places. However, as I said in a review of “Heber Springs,” if I’m reviewing campgrounds here, it isn’t accurate to review “Greers Ferry Lake.” Instead, you would probably be camping at Devil’s Fork Rec Area, Dam Site Rec Area & Campground, Sugar Loaf Campground (in Higden, AR), or Cove Creek Rec Area & Campground (in Quitman, AR). I’ll review those separately; reviewing “Greers Ferry Lake” for prospective campers isn’t all that helpful, in my view.
Despite that, I’ll just say that I love the town of Heber Springs which is located on the Lake. As for Greers Ferry generally, the lake is north of the dam on the Little Red River. There is a ton to do on the lake from fishing, boating/skiing, swimming, etc and it’s a very, very clean lake. The Dam Site Marina has boat rentals, tackle, etc and it’s really nice. For anyone who likes to or is planning on doing a lot of water activities on their trip, the [area around Greers Ferry Lake] is definitely a great spot for anyone wanting to camp with a family due to the lake’s proximity to civilization (ie WalMart) if you need it, activities, amenities, and cleanliness. Plan a trip.

I spent many years in Arkansas while completing my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and I frequently visit as I live in NE Oklahoma. Heber, as we called it, was only about 40 minutes from the university and it was a frequent hot spot for all of us in the spring and fall. It isn’t all that accurate to say “Heber” is the location for camping. Instead, Heber is a small community about 60 miles north of Little Rock on Greers Ferry Lake. The lake is NW of the Little Red River Dam, which is likewise NW of Sugar Loaf Mt (also a great place for hiking). There are several campgrounds all around the lake, but one of the most popular is the Dam Site Campground. I say that to say, since this is a site for campground reviews, any “review” of camping at Heber Springs isn’t accurate. Instead you want to look for reviews on the Dam Site Campground, the Narrows, Cove Creek or the Red River Trout Dock. Nevertheless, I have tons of memories at Heber and the way I describe it to people is this: it looks like God stepped on a mountain, leaving a huge foot print, then filled it with water. Since the lake “shore” is largely straight rock face, this is the best way I can describe it. The water is beautiful. There is tremendous fishing and floating just below the dam on the Red River. It’s absolutely worth a trip - hands down. It’s also a place where you could plan a week long trip. Plenty to do, see, eat, etc. If you care, I think it may be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in the fall. So to me, I’d go in the fall or late spring. Lastly, and my favorite, since there are cliffs everywhere around the lake, one of the favorite past times of students is to cliff jump. There are cliffs of various heights all around the lake, but there is one in particular that’s right at or just over 100 ft. It’s a right of passage at the university I attended. Fun times. Go; it won’t disappoint

This was a last minute change of plans after being flooded out of River site. Very helpful and friendly attendants. We had a great time with family taking 3 sites. Stayed 4 nights with no problems.

Electric but no site water and dump stations. Beautiful view from site 16/18/20. Very shaded.

Spend a week here with friends and my fur baby. We went kayaking around the point and took great pictures . We had suppers on the open fire and had roasted marshmallows . Spend our days exploring the area . Done a little fishing. Clean restrooms and showers. Will stay here again.

Awesome big lake with swimming and cliff jumping and boating. We met some people scuba diving in the lake, sounds like a lot of fun. The campground is also big though still pretty simple with just showers, playground, and shorelines, though there is a nature center up near the dam. Some of the camp sites are on the lake and some are pretty sandwiched together, but it’s a nice place overall, clean for how much traffic there is.

Great place to get away and have a good family week/weekend great Cliffs to jump off of and places to walk trails and see wonderful thing very friendly community

This is a nice place for camping and playing in the lake. It can get noisy on the weekend, so bring ear plugs! Most sites are nice and shady with plenty of trees.
