Several RV parks operate near Forest Lakes in Arizona's high country. AJ's Getaway RV Park offers 43 sites with electric hookups including 30-amp and 50-amp service, sewer connections, and water hookups for full-service camping. Forest-Edge RV Haven provides three RV sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical connections along with water and sewer hookups. Elk Pines RV Resort in Overgaard features 68 sites with full hookups and operates seasonally from April through October. Overgaard RV Resort includes 50-amp electrical service, sewer connections, and water hookups for year-round camping. "The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site. Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand."

Most RV parks in the region accommodate big rigs, though navigation requires attention to tree placement at entrances. Dump stations are available at several locations, with some parks offering on-site sanitary dump facilities. Cell service varies significantly throughout the area, with stronger signals typically found closer to towns. Pet policies generally allow animals, though restrictions may apply in certain areas. During summer months, these high-elevation parks provide relief from desert heat, with temperatures cooling significantly after monsoon rains begin. Travelers should note that some parks have limited amenities, while others offer showers, laundry facilities, and trash service. Winter camping options exist but are more limited, with some parks closing seasonally. A camper noted: "We wanted to get out of the southern Arizona heat. This place did just that. Plenty of room for big rigs (40'+). I brought my 37' Motorhome and had no problem finding a big enough site."

      Ponderosa RV Resort

Adult Oriented CG In The Pines

We spent 5-nights here (July 1-6, 2022). Ponderosa is a reasonably quiet (“home improvement” construction next door to us), adult oriented, RV park in the pines(we had apple trees) of Pinetop. I wouldn’t call Ponderosa a RV Resort as it’s more a trailer park with the vast majority of occupants being long term tenants. It is a relatively easy access CG with back-in and pull through (8?) gravel sites. It is a good base camp to visit the area. There are plenty local attractions: lakes, rivers and streams, wilderness and national forests. Activities include: fishing, biking (wish I brought my mtn bike), hiking/walking and ATV trails. We did not make use of the laundry, bathrooms or showers. The WiFi was good as was cell phone reception. We might stay here again.

      Roosevelt Lake - Cholla Campground

      Great canpgroup

This was our first time camping here and we will most definitely be back. You can reserve all odd numbered campsites online. Even numbers are first come first serve. There is a boat ramp located at the front of the campground. Not ideal lake access for fishing or swimming because of steep hills down to lake. Potable water available. Dump station is currently open 24/7. Bathrooms have running water and flush toilets and also showers. Multiple playgrounds. Each spot has covered table and fire ring. Loose gravel pads. Most are fairly level. Some spots aren’t big rig accessible.

High desert, lots of sky and land, shards of ancient Hopi pottery everywhere, 52 sites some pull through, back in and tent sites, 30/50 amp available, dump station and potable water station, free showers and restrooms. On site Camphost, Homolovi I a d Homolovi ll nearby, rangers available from 8-5 - 7 days a week. Stargazing night at the ranger station with telescpe, 1880s Mormon cemetery within view of San Francisco Peaks and little Colorado River. A gem in the desert.

Nice But Sites a Little Tricky

This is really a Park Model Resort that has about 25% of their sites set aside for RVs. The RV sites are scattered throughout the park but they have tried to group them together as much as possible. The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site. Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand. Almost all the sites have a tree planted right at the front next to the road. Some of the trees are a bit wide which really makes getting into the site difficult. Even though the sites are wide the RV parking area is between the patio and the sewer connection which is about 11ft wide. When you combine that with landscaping and patio covers on some of the park models and getting in some sites can be real challenging for a larger rig. We have a 40ft motorhome and have been to this park probably 8 times. So far we have made it in and out but with some new scratches and a bit of maneuvering. Cell service is pretty bad here. We have Verizon cell phones which usually worked for phone service but sometimes cut out. We have Verizon and AT&T hotspots. AT&T worked the best but not fast enough to stream anything most of the time. There is Wi-Fi offered for a fee but we have not tried that. They also offer cable TV which I believe is free. They have a couple of dog parks, nice common areas, laundry, and a small gym. They have some other clubs and activity rooms but all of those have been closed due to Covid.

Tonto Creek Trail RV Park (55+)

Quiet Desert Gem with Beautiful Mountain Views

We loved our stay at Tonto Creek Trail RV& MHC! From the start, the staff was warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The park is peaceful, clean, and well-maintained—exactly what we were looking for in a relaxing getaway. The location couldn’t be better. Nestled in Tonto Basin, the park is just minutes from Roosevelt Lake, which was perfect for fishing, boating, and soaking in the views. We also enjoyed exploring the nearby Tonto National Forest trails—ideal for hiking and ATV adventures. As pet owners, we were thrilled that pets stay free! The community is very pet-friendly, which made traveling with our furry family stress-free. The grounds are safe and quiet, with beautiful mountain views all around, giving us plenty of space to relax after a day of exploring. Between the friendly community vibe, the great amenities, and the unbeatable location, this is a hidden gem in Arizona. We’re already planning our next trip back to Tonto Creek Trail RV—highly recommend it!

      Houston Mesa Campground

      Great spot

We spent 4 nights in #3 Mountain Lion loop. Pull through site that our 30' toy hauler fit nicely in. Would be tight for anything larger.

Really beautiful place with many trees. Convient toilets and showers. Showers are $3 for 6 minutes. We didn't use them. Lots of bear proof dumpsters.

Hosts were friendly and not intrusive. Firewood available for $8 a bundle. You can get the same firewood at the Circle K in Payson for $6.

Water fill and dump station at the campground entrance and several water hydrants throughout the campground.

The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because of the road and aircraft noise. It was pretty loud during the day but we didn't have any trouble sleeping.

      Would definitely come back here.

      RV Resort

This is an RV Resort, not a camp ground. The lots are average size and fairly easy to get in to. I’m glad I had a spotter. They have nice amenities including cable TV. There is free WiFi, but only at the office. Dog friendly. It has many park models and seems to be a retirement community. The people were nice. Great place to spend the summer months in Arizona. A bit expensive, but I was here for work so it was paid for.

      Homolovi State Park Campground

Lovely campground with some unusual layout issues

We had a pull through spot for our 30' Class A. In order to have the electric and water hookups(dump site only) on the"correct" side of our rig, we had to back into our pull through because we would have had to drive the wrong way down the road otherwise. And the picnic tables and grill are on that same side. So in the future, we'll park"correctly" so we can enjoy the table outside our front door and just run electric cable under the rig, along with the hose.

Otherwise, this is a really lovely spot. It's not right in Winslow, but the extra 5 minutes is worth it. It's a very peaceful spot...you don't hear the interstate noise and this place does NOT have a party atmosphere. Everyone was just super quiet and friendly. Due to traffic issues in New Mexico, we didn't get here until nearly 5(instead of original plan of 2 pm) and we had to leave early in the morning...so didn't really get to enjoy the place as we had hoped. But I saw enough to know we would NOT hesitate to return.

      Homolovi State Park Campground

      Nice option off I-40

This state park offers tent sites, RV with electrical/water and pull-through sites. In winter water was turned off at campsites but bathroom and showers were open. Trash and sewage dump also available. Just a couple of miles off I-40 which is both convenient and not very scenic. Great sunset though looking fish at the interstate. Homolovi archeological site to visit if you have time. Great cell reception both Verizon and AT&T

    Guide to Forest Lakes

Forest Lakes sits in Arizona's high country at around 7,500 feet elevation, offering RV campers significantly cooler temperatures than Phoenix during summer months. The surrounding Mogollon Rim terrain provides a mix of pine forests and meadows with wildlife viewing opportunities.

    What to do

Hiking trails access: Forest Lakes provides direct access to multiple trail systems that wind through the Mogollon Rim area. AJ's Getaway RV Park offers convenient trail access, as one camper noted: "HUGE sites and trails right outside the Campground."

Lake fishing: Multiple lakes within driving distance provide fishing opportunities. A visitor at Mogollon RV Park mentioned: "This is on the mogollon rim so there is some great hiking and sightseeing nearby. Several lakes close also."

    What campers like

Spacious RV sites: Many parks in the Forest Lakes region offer larger-than-average sites. At Encore Venture In in Show Low, campers appreciate the generous spacing: "The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site."

Rural atmosphere: The setting offers a genuine country feel. At Oxbow Estates RV Park in Payson, campers enjoy: "Situated in a rural setting with trees and farm animals nearby. Across the street is a donkey that's very friendly likes to be pet and brays every now and again."

    What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies throughout Forest Lakes and surrounding areas. One camper at Encore Venture In reported: "Cell service is pretty bad here. We have Verizon cell phones which usually worked for phone service but sometimes cut out. We have Verizon and AT&T hotspots. AT&T worked the best but not fast enough to stream anything most of the time."

Site surface considerations: Many RV parks in the area use gravel or cinder surfaces which can affect mobility. A camper at Encore Venture In mentioned: "Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand."

Entrance navigation challenges: Trees at park entrances can make maneuvering larger rigs difficult. Some of the trees are a bit wide which really makes getting into the site difficult."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for level sites: When traveling with kids, finding level, stable sites makes setup easier. At Elk Pines RV Resort in Overgaard, a camper appreciated: "I stayed at Elk Pines for about a month. It was so quiet and peaceful."

    Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Be aware of site specifications when booking, especially for larger rigs. At Take It Easy RV Park, a camper found: "Level site close to I40 but road noise not too bad but makes it an easy stop."

Leveling requirements: Most sites in the Forest Lakes region require minimal leveling. At Oxbow Estates RV Park, campers report: "Sites are very level, decent amount of room and very clean."

Road conditions: Interior roads at some parks present challenges. About Payson Campground & RV Resort, a camper mentioned: "Great place, laundry, pool and close to town.
