Island Lake Campground

This campground hosts 10 campsites and a trailhead across State Highway 296. The trail climbs along Dead Indian Creek, through the Absaroka Wilderness, across Dead Indian Meadows, and up to the summit of Dead Indian Peak. 16-day stay limit Water: Not available This site is not accessible to persons with mobility impairments No cell service Notes: Adjacent corrals at trailhead across Hwy 296. Dead Indian Campground

All campsites are reservable only. Call the Call Center at 1-877-996-7275 to make a reservation. Lake Shore open year-round. 

Lake Shore Bay Campground has 36 sites, an active day use area and a highly used boat ramp. Lake Shore generally has more visitor traffic. There is very little irrigated turf at Lake Shore but it does have a bubbler system for watering trees. There is no playground and is better suited for campers who are planning on boating or campers spending part of the day in town or touring the area. 

Daily use fees and camping fees are charged separately.

Visitors staying overnight are required to pay both fees.

Camping fees do not include daily use fees.

Annual camping permits do not cover daily use fees.

Located about 40 miles from Yellowstone National Park's east entrance and 9 miles from Cody, Wyoming, the Park is in an excellent location to explore the area's rich history, sightseeing and wildlife. Mountains dominate the scenery at Buffalo Bill State Park. Shoshone Canyon, where the dam is located, is framed by Rattlesnake Mountain to the north and Cedar Mountain (also known as Spirit Mountain) to the south. Farther west, along the north shoreline, lies Logan Mountain. The north and south forks of the Shoshone River are divided by Sheep Mountain, while prominent on the southern skyline is Carter Mountain. All are part of the Rocky Mountain Absaroka (Ab-ka) Range. Elevations vary from approximately 5,400 feet in the state park to more than 12,000 feet in the Absarokas.

Additional Vehicle Permits are not available online and must be purchased in person at a park or selling agent.  Proof of original purchase and vehicle registration are required.

Hunter Peak Campground is located on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway/State Highway 296, approximately four miles south of the junction with scenic Beartooth Highway/U.S. Highway 12. The campground is about 60 miles northeast of Cody, in northwestern Wyoming. Recreation The Clarks Fork offers outstanding fishing opportunities for rainbow and cutthroat trout. Many hiking trails are located in the area, including the Clarks Fork Trailhead, which is across the highway from the campground. Facilities This small campground contains single-family campsites, each equipped with a table and campfire ring. Vault toilets, hand-pumped water, and trash collection are provided. A host is on-site. Firewood may be gathered in the area. Fuel and sundries are available in the nearby community of Crandall. Sites 5, 6, 7, and 8 are available for reservation. Please click on the "Check Availability" button for more information. Natural Features The campground sits on the banks of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, at an elevation of 6,500 feet. A mixed conifer forest covers the campground. A variety of wildlife, including grizzly bear, deer and elk makes its home in the area. Nearby Attractions The Beartooth Highway was deemed "the most beautiful drive in America," by the late Charles Kuralt. It snakes across the rugged Beartooth Mountains from Red Lodge to Cooke City, Mont., and is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies. Along the way, visitors are treated to sweeping views and plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities. Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance is approximately 24 miles from the campground via the Beartooth Highway. Hunter Peak

Sunlight Rangers Cabin lies within the Sunlight Ranger Station, located approximately 40 miles northwest of Cody, Wyoming, in the Shoshone National Forest. Guests enjoy the area for its abundant trails for hiking, biking and off-road riding. Recreation Sunlight Creek is a popular fly-fishing stream. Anglers cast for cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout. Fishing is good in July, after the high-water season. Hikers, mountain bikers and off-road enthusiasts will find several motorized and non-motorized trails in the surrounding area. Facilities The spacious, three-room log cabin can accommodate up to eight people. It has two queen beds and two sets of bunk beds. No linens, bedding or pillows are provided. The fully-equipped kitchen includes a stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, pots, pans, dishes and utensils. The dining room has seating for eight. A fireplace is located in the living room. A telephone is available FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY. An indoor bathroom is available. Guests must bring their own towels and toiletries. Natural Features The cabin is situated in beautiful Sunlight Valley near Sunlight Creek. A scenic, grassy meadow surrounds the cabin, and a mixed conifer forest covers the mountainsides. Sunlight Rangers Cabin

Limber Pine Campground is located 12 miles south of Red Lodge, in southern Montana. It is just off the scenic Beartooth Highway. The area is a popular location for fishing, hiking and scenic driving. Greenough Lake is a half-mile away. Glacier Lake, Hellroaring and Lake Fork trailheads are nearby. The lake is also open to canoeing and kayaking. The Beartooth Wilderness can be accessed nearby, via the Hellroaring and Lake Fork trailheads. Visitors also enjoy mountain biking and hiking on the Parkside National Recreation Trail. Hellroaring Road is open to off-road vehicles. Facilities The campground offers single-family campsites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Accessible vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water are provided. Trash can be deposited in receptacles at the Greenough Lake Campground. Natural Features The campground sits in the shadow of the Beartooth Range on the banks of Rock Creek. A forest of aspen and pine covers the area. A variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, deer and elk, makes its home in the surrounding area. Nearby Attractions The charming town of Red Lodge, Mont., offers a variety of dining and lodging options, galleries, shops and annual summer events. The Home of Champions Rodeo is held on Fourth of July weekend, Beartooth Bike Rally and Iron Horse Rodeo take place in mid-July, the Mountain Man Rendezvous is in late July and the Festival of Nations happens in early August. Limber Pine

M-K is a free campground located 2.6 miles up the Main Fork Rock Creek Road #2421, not far from the Beartooth Highway.**Camp sites:** 10 * **Max Trailer Length** : 20ft * **Host** : No * **Accessible Facilities:** Vault Toilets * **Trash Pickup:** No * **Firewood:** No. Don't move firewood to other areas or bring in outside firewood. Prevent the spread of tree-killing insects by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it there. **Reservations:** No 

M-K Campground is named after the Morrison-Knudsen civil engineering and construction company who were in charge of building the switchbacks on the Beartooth Highway between 1932 and 1936. Their camp was in the valley in the approximate location of the current day M-K campground.



M-K Campground

Cascade Campground is located 11 miles west of Red Lodge, in southern Montana. It conveniently sits along Forest Road 2071, which is paved for most of the route. The area is a popular location for hiking, backpacking, and fishing. Natural Features: The campground is situated on the banks of the West Fork of Rock Creek. The area surrounding the campground was burned by the Cascade Fire in 2008, which left many open glades with abundant wildflowers. **Recreation:** Fishing is a popular activity along the West Fork of Rock Creek and at nearby Wild Bill Lake. The small lake is open to kayaking and canoeing, and an accessible fishing dock is located on the shore. The Basin Lakes Trailhead is three miles away, across the road from Basin Campground. Silver Run Plateau, West Fork, and Timberline Lakes trails offer access to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Mountain bikers enjoy the Ingles Creek Trail and a variety of loop trails at Silver Run. Biking is also allowed on the Basin Lakes Trail. **Facilities:** The campground offers several single-family sites, two of which are accessible. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Trash may be deposited in receptacles at nearby Basin Campground. Sites 1 and 2 support established accessibility standards. Picnic tables and bear boxes provided. However, water, Forest Service fire rings, and garbage pickup are not provided. Corrals and parking for horse trailers are available at the nearby trailhead.

For this reason, hundreds of thousands visit every year. Plan ahead and experience once-in-a-lifetime camping in Wyoming in the process. 


Although abundant, camping in Wyoming is extremely sought after, especially near the park. Twelve campgrounds within Yellowstone National Park provide adventurers with plentiful options, but planning ahead is vital. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!
