Firehole Canyon Campground is located on the far northeastern shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir within the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area on the Ashley National Forest. Rock Springs, Wyoming, is just 29 miles away. Boating, fishing and water skiing are popular activities. Recreation Fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing and swimming are popular activities on the lake. Campers are offered the convenience of an adjacent boat ramp and a beach area. Facilities The campground contains several family campsites. Each campsite has a cabana, picnic table and campfire ring. Flush toilets, showers, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Roads and parking spurs are paved. A dump station is located on-site. Natural Features The campground lies in a high desert environment at an elevation of 6,300 feet. Russian olive trees and sagebrush are scattered throughout the site. Shade is minimal. The site affords scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding bluffs and red rock formations. Nearby Attractions Flaming Gorge Dam offers guided tours of the working hydroelectric plant and the dam, and the adjacent visitor center contains area history exhibits. ADA Access: N

Firehole Canyon Campground

Buckboard Crossing Campground is located on the far northwest shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir at an elevation of 6,100 feet. Boating, fishing and water skiing are popular activities. Recreation Fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing and swimming are popular activities on the lake. Campers are offered the convenience of an adjacent boat ramp, marina and fish cleaning station. Buckboard Marina has boat rentals, fuel, slips, fishing licenses, bait and groceries. Facilities The campground consists of 66 single-family campsites, most of which can be reserved. Several sites in Loop A have electrical hookups. Most sites have a shade cabana, picnic table and campfire ring. Some sites have grills and/or fire rings. Flush toilets, drinking water and showers are provided. Non-campers can use the shower facilities for a small fee. A dump station is located on-site. Natural Features The campground is situated in a high desert landscape with sagebrush and a few scattered trees. Natural shade is minimal. Typical weather ranges from warm days to cool nights. Nearby Attractions Flaming Gorge Dam offers guided tours of the working hydroelectric plant and the dam itself; The adjacent visitor center contains area history exhibits. ADA Access: N

The Sweetwater Events Complex is home to over 1,200 RV spaces, nearly all with 50 amp service and full hook-ups. The spaces are located within three separate campgrounds (see maps below):

    Boar's Tusk Campground

The campgrounds also feature restroom/shower facilities. Daily rate is $30 plus tax and can be paid onsite. Enter through the livestock entrance and visit the caretaker's house located through the campground on the left side of the road. No reservations needed. Call 307-352-6789 for long term availability. For equine events and county fair campground reservations can be made online on the event pages. Boar's Tusk & White Mountain Campgrounds are only available for large event rentals. Overnight and small events will utilize the Pilot Butte Campground.

Although abundant, camping in Wyoming is extremely sought after, especially near the park. Twelve campgrounds within Yellowstone National Park provide adventurers with plentiful options, but planning ahead is vital. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

The Killpecker Sand Dunes Open Play Area Campground is located about 32 miles from Rock Springs. It is a non-fee area and is ADA accessible. It has a vault toilet and fire rings. The [Killpecker Sand Dunes Open Play Area](https://www.blm.gov/visit/search-details/2252/2) is part of the Greater Sand Dunes Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). ACECs are areas within the public lands where special management attention is required to protect and prevent irreparable damage to important resources. Important resources in this area include wildlife, cultural, scenic, and wilderness. The western portion of the ACEC includes the Sand Dunes and Buffalo Hump Wilderness Study Areas (WSA). These are areas of land that have potential for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. The BLM is required by law to maintain the natural character of WSAs. Recreational activities like hiking, hunting, and horseback riding are allowed while those that involve the use of motorized vehicles or mechanical transportation are not.
