The Mikesell-Potts Recreation Area is a county owned facility located on the south shore of Lake DeSmet 8 miles north of Buffalo, WY off exit 51 of I-90. Each year, Lake DeSmet is visited by locals and travelers from across the country who enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, camping and pristine views of the water and surrounding mountains.

Mikesell Potts Recreation Area

Pitch your tent or park your RV along the shady banks of Goose Creek. The High Plains unfurl to the east, while the Big Horn Mountains loom to the west. Hike and ride horseback or make the hour's drive to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. You'll find other relics of the Indian wars near Sheridan, including the Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site and the Fetterman Battlefield. Shop Sheridan's galleries for antiques and artisans' leather goods. Turn the kids loose in KOA's big playground and get your fill of fishing and swimming. This KOA is big rig friendly. Enjoy world-class ATVing and snowmobiling in the Big Horn Mountains.

Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

Enjoy this 12-mile-long reservoir situated among scenic red shale, juniper canyons, and the open prairies of southeastern Montana. The park is loved by Montana and Wyoming anglers, campers, and boaters. It provides excellent fishing as numerous "state record" fish have been pulled from its waters.

The park offers 81 reservable camping sites with electric hookups, with 27 of those being double occupancy campsites (two electric hook-ups), as well as over 80 non-reservable, non-electric camping sites. Most sites have a fire ring and a picnic table. A dump station and water faucets are available during peak season, as weather permits. The park also has a fish cleaning station and over 20 vault toilets throughout the campgrounds. There are 2 boat ramps with docks for launching boats, one at Camper Point by the marina and one at Pee Wee North.

Day use areas include sheltered picnic tables at Campers Point and Sand Point. Sand Point has a small, but popular “beach area” for swimming and picnicking.

Jackalope Campground is now taking reservations! We have 50 full service camp sites, both pull through and back in looking out onto our beautiful Bighorn mountains. Guests have access to three bathrooms and showers along with a laundry room and dog run. Our location is perfect for a quick in and out trip, a nice day touring around Sheridan or for guest who might need service work, all while being in a safe, remote location! Travelers can also stop by Dalton’s RV, where they can find a wide variety of parts, or bring their camper into our service center for some doctoring. South Fork Campground is located 15 miles west of Buffalo, Wyoming on the east side of scenic Cloud Peak Skyway, near the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. The surrounding Bighorn National Forest offers a wide variety of activities, including hiking, fishing, scenic driving and a number of historic sites. Anglers will find rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout in the lake. The Circle Park Trailhead is 3 miles from the campground. This beautiful trail accesses numerous alpine lakes and two 12,000' peaks within the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Many additional hiking trails are available in the area. Scenic off-road driving is available at nearby Elgin Park, Pole Creek and Crazy Woman Canyon Roads. Hiking and mountain biking are allowed on these roads as well. Facilities This fully accessible campground offers single-family sites each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Natural Features The campground is situated on the banks of South Fork Clear Creek at an elevation of 7,800 feet. A dense forest of lodgepole pine covers the campground. Nearby Attractions South Fork Lodge is located across the highway from the campground, offering dining options, lodging, guided horseback riding, a fishing pond and a small store with fishing and camping supplies. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

This is a very historical area and the Gatchel Museum in Buffalo is a good visit. Also the Occidental Saloon is on main St., offers music and fun. Need a lake for dipping your feet...Lake Desmet is nearby right off I90. Devils Tower is less than 3 hr. away for a good days getaway. The National historical trail center in Casper is really excellent.

     We are an ideal stopping off point to visit the beautiful Big Horn Mountains, the Bighorn National Forest, and the Historic Bozeman Trail sites.  We are also at the point where these two interstates meet up with the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway (also known as Highway 16).  Easy off and easy on -- just 1/2 block west of I-25's exit 299.  This is the shortest, safest and most scenic route to Yellowstone Park - with the least grade for those big outfits.
