Yellowstone National Park is the home of almost 3,500 square miles of nationally protected lands. From rushing waterfalls, roaring rivers, soaring peaks, and marvels of geology such as Old Faithful, the park has sights not even imagination even conjure. For this reason, hundreds of thousands visit every year. Plan ahead and experience once-in-a-lifetime camping in Wyoming in the process. 


Although abundant, camping in Wyoming is extremely sought after, especially near the park. Twelve campgrounds within Yellowstone National Park provide adventurers with plentiful options, but planning ahead is vital. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

The Best Camping Near Keystone, Wyoming

This tiny but mighty cabin, w/breakfast & coffee included, sits up on Jelm Mountain at 7600 ft with a view overlooking the Laramie River. This cozy spot is equipped with a queen bed, Outhouse, (with access to a full, not shared, bathroom) propane gas grill, picnic table, fire pit, hot tub/Sun room, and gazebo. .

Little Cabin with a View sits right on the edge of Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and is close to the Wyoming Colorado Border. This makes it an amazing hiking destination and great for snowshoeing and nordic skiing in the winter. Depending on the time of year a trip up Jelm Mountain offers some beautiful views. The lack of light pollution make for great star gazing or full moon watching from the gazebo, hot tub or the Little Cabin front porch.

There is electricity, electric heat, microwave & mine fridge. The Wi-Fi is accessible in the sunroom/hot tub area, located about 180 ft from the Little Cabin, but does not extend to the Little Cabin. Downlading is slow but checking messages, social media & wi-fi calling works fine. Download anything you want to watch or listen to prior to arrival.

Fur Babies are welcome. They love the room to run.

Fire Pit use is dependent on winds and the weather and how dry the surrounding area is.



Little Cabin With a View

The campground is located on Brooklyn Lake. Every site has a view of the lake ranging from great to spectacular. The lake is a nice canoeing lake in the shadow of the snow capped Browns Peak. This campground provides 19 campsites with tables, fire rings, trash pick up, and vault toilets. There is fishing access in Brooklyn Lake and trail access to the Sheep Lake Trail #389 and Glacier Lakes Trail. Internal-combustion motors are prohibited on the lake, only hand-powered boating allowed. There is a carry down access for boats (no ramp). Dogs must be leashed in the campground.

North Fork Campground lies along the banks of the North Fork of the Little Laramie River in the Medicine Bow National Forest. The facility is popular for RV camping, fishing, hiking and mountain biking. Recreation Mountain bikers and hikers have the ease of accessing the scenic, well-known North Fork Trail from the campground. Visitors who would like a more leisurely experience can drive the scenic Highway 130 or take in the view at the North Fork Overlook nearby. Anglers can fish for trout in the clear mountain waters of the North Fork of the Little Laramie. Facilities A total of 60 campsites are divided into two sections. Most sites lie along the river banks. Vault toilets and a hand pump for drinking water are provided. A campground host is available for visitor assistance. Natural Features Located at an elevation of 8,600 feet, the campground sits in a thick forest of lodgepole pine and spruce. The sound of the Little Laramie River can be heard from most campsites. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland encompass nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, mule deer and moose are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands. Nearby Attractions Visitors can find many more outdoor opportunities in the surrounding national forests and grasslands, including hiking, biking, camping, horseback and off-road vehicle riding, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and winter sports. North Fork Campground

French Creek Campground is located on Forest Road 500. Facilities include 11 campsites (small trailers only up to 32 feet), water, picnic tables, toilets, fire grates and trash service available. Note: No water or trash services beyond mid September.) Fishing access is available nearby in both North and South French Creeks. The Lower Tie Hack trailhead is .25 mile east of the campground.

French Creek

Ryan Park Campground lies along the Snowy Range Scenic Byway in the Medicine Bow National Forest, at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The site is intriguing for history buffs; it was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and was used as a prisoner of war camp for Italians and Germans during World War II. Recreation Visitors can access nearby road cycling routes, stream fishing and day hiking. Scenery abounds in the Snowy Range high country, including the Mirror Lake picnic area, which campers can reach via a paved road from the campground. Although little remains of either of the two historical camps, visitors can learn more from interpretive signs on the facility grounds. Facilities Ryan Park boasts 42 campsites and one group campsite. The group site has 14 sites and can host up to 140 visitors. All campsites have picnic tables and campfire rings with grates. Natural Features The campground is situated in a mountainous area along Barrett Creek in the Medicine Bow National Forest. The surrounding forest consists of evergreen trees and aspen that turn golden in fall. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland encompass nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, mule deer and moose are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands. Nearby Attractions The historic Brush Creek Visitor Center is located 2.5 miles west of the campground and provides information on various outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, camping, horseback and off-road vehicle riding, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and winter sports. Ryan Park

This is a first come-first serve campground, no reservations. This is our most popular campground, arrive early to find a spot.

The campground has 16 sites in a single loop that meanders along a spruce and fir-lined hillside in the midst of a fisherman's paradise of 102 recreational lakes.  This is a rustic, picturesque campground where every site has delightful views of the Snowy Range. 22 foot max trailer length. Tight roads and small campsites. Tents must be set up on tent pads and are not permitted outside the developed pad.

The campground is convenient to a variety of hiking trails and two crystal clear snow-melt lakes - Libby and Lewis Lakes.  Three popular trailheads originate in this area. You must carry your boat to the water's edge.

Sugarloaf Campground

The campground is at the eastern edge of the Platte River Wilderness, and has 16 sites. It is a single loop with one side running parallel to Pelton Creek among Lodgepole pines. Some sites overlook the creek and a meadow. The understory is grass and the sites are fairly close together providing minimal privacy. A trailhead provides wilderness access via the Douglas Creek Trail or the Platte Ridge Trail. 14 day stay limit. Stock unloading facility near campground, however no stock are allowed in the campground. Picnic tables, toilets, drinking water, fire grates and no refuse receptacles (pack out your own trash, leave no trace). Fishing is available in Douglas Creek. This area is located in the Snowy Range and is managed by the Laramie Ranger District.

Setting up your own campsite away from developed fee sites, also known as dispersed camping, is allowed in most places. From getting away from it all to just enjoying a weekend with friends, dispersed camping can make for a great story. Across the forests, opportunities range from dispersed camping miles into wilderness or just off a forest road in designated dispersed areas. Make sure to bring everything you need when dispersed camping, as water, restrooms, and fire rings may not be available nearby, and always remember to follow Leave No Trace principles.

Laramie Overlook Disperesed Camping

Six Mile Gap Campground is 2 miles off Highway 230 and provides access to the North Platte River and Platte River Wilderness Area. The campground has six tent sites and three pull-thru sites. Facilities include picnic tables, bear canisters for food storage, drinking water, toilets, fire grates, and trash service. Stay limit is 14 days. A separate parking area is available for hikers and river floaters. Popular activities nearby include fishing, floating the North Platte River and hiking the Platte River Trail. The North Platte River is classified as a blue-ribbon trout stream by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD). Fish species present include brook, brown and rainbow trout. Douglas Creek also offers good fishing opportunities. Special fishing regulations apply to the North Platte River upstream of Saratoga, Wyoming. All watercraft (except for inflatables 10’ or less in length) must have a valid Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species decal. Decals are available from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) online, at regional offices and at automated license vendors.
