Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! Set in the rolling sage grasslands of the Great Divide Basin, this reservoir becomes a watery oasis under the bright summer skies. Fishing for trout in the reservoir and surrounding streams is good; this is also a popular non-motorized water sports area. This is a free site with 5 campsites, vault toilets, boat ramp, and day use parking. Campsites have picnic tables, fire ring/grills, and parking spurs with no pull-throughs. No horses allowed in campground. Typical use season is from June 1st through November 15 because access roads become impassable after heavy rain and snow belt wherein they get extremely muddy.

Besides the sound of the river meandering north, this is a very peaceful campground. There is flyfishing for trout here. There is also a take out for the North Platte River, for canoers or kayakers. A control crest was put in below the dugway so boaters are advised to start their trips upstream. This is a free site with 5 campsites (1 pull-through, 4 spurs), group site, vault toilet, day use parking, picnic tables, fire rings/grills, and parking spur. The main attraction is the North Platte River for fishing and floating. No horses are allowed in the campground.
