Home to the country’s first national park and national monument, visitors can witness spewing geysers, rolling prairieland, and almost everything in between. Yellowstone National Park is the home of almost 3,500 square miles of nationally protected lands. From rushing waterfalls, roaring rivers, soaring peaks, and marvels of geology such as Old Faithful, the park has sights not even imagination even conjure. For this reason, hundreds of thousands visit every year. Plan ahead and experience once-in-a-lifetime camping in Wyoming in the process. 


Although abundant, camping in Wyoming is extremely sought after, especially near the park. Twelve campgrounds within Yellowstone National Park provide adventurers with plentiful options, but planning ahead is vital. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

NOTE: Esterbrook Work Center does not have public water sources. Campground water pump is for campground users. 6300' elevation. 12 sites in a lightly wooded area. 14 day stay limit. Non-motorized access to the Sunset Ridge Trail is available at two points within the campground. An OHV trailhead is 1/2 mile down the NFSR 633 road to access the motorized trail system. It is located in the Laramie Peak area and is managed by the Douglas Ranger District.

Esterbrook

Set at the base of Laramie Peak, the tallest peak in the North Laramie Range and a waypoint for Oregon Trail migrants, the campground has trail access to both the Laramie Peak Trail and Friend Park Trail for non-motorized users. At 7400' elevation, there are 11 campsites of which three are walk in access/tent use only (parking available up above). Motorized users of the Laramie Peak Trail will find the trailhead just 1/4 mile from the campground. Friend Park Trail is not open to motorized use. Fishing is available in the adjacent Friend Creek and surrounding beaver ponds. It is managed by the Douglas Ranger District.

Friend Park

Curtis Gulch Campground is located at 6600' elevation at the end of Forest Road 658, about 4 miles inside the forest boundary. It is located in the Laramie Peak area and is managed by the Douglas Ranger District. It has six campsites with picnic tables, toilets, fire grates and drinking water along scenic La Bonte Creek in the midst of the canyon. The campsites will accommodate trailers under 22 feet in length.

CAMPSITES AT COLTER BAY ARE AVAILABLE ONLY ON A FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVED BASIS. CAMPING IS ALLOWED AT DESIGNATED SITES ONLY.

Colter Bay is a small campground, which is situated in a stand of Cottonwood trees just off of Lakeshore Drive. With only seven individual campsites, it is an ideal spot for you and your family to have some space to yourselves. The campground is largely undeveloped, with only a dirt road for access; six of the campsites do not have any established camping pads. Site 5 has an ADA compliant concrete RV pad. Colter Bay also has decently close access to the water on a seasonal basis. Normally, from May through early-mid July, the bay has water in it, and the campsites have very close foot-traffic access to the water. The water access, and sheltered nature of the cove make Colter Bay a very popular campground during high water. During the rest of the year, the bay drains out, and this campground becomes one of the farthest from the water. All campsites in Colter Bay are potentially impacted during high water flooding.

## Overview

La Prele Guard Station is located south of Douglas, Wyoming in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It was originally built as a remote ranger station in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was converted into a work center when the La Prele Ranger District was discontinued in 1956.  
  
  
  
The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Today, it provides a unique lodging experience and delightful spot for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in south central Wyoming.  
  
  
  
The guard station is open from early June through late September each year and is accessible by car. Weather and road closures may impact opening and closure dates. Many modern conveniences are provided, but guests will need to bring a few of their own supplies to make their stay comfortable. There is no electricity but the Forest Service provides battery operated lanterns for use. Please note that candles or other flame producing items are not permitted in the cabin.

## Recreation

Hiking, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding and hunting can be found within the vicinity. Off-road vehicle riders can access trails in the area as well.  
  
The trailhead for the Twin Peaks trail is three miles north of La Prele Guard Station and provides great access for elk and deer hunters. The trail meanders through both private and public land to the base of Twin Peaks. From the top of the peaks, views of the Laramie Mountains dominate the landscape.  
  
Anglers will enjoy fly fishing for a variety of trout at La Prele Creek within walking distance from the cabin.

## Facilities

The log structure has two bedrooms equipped with beds and mattresses that can accommodate up to ten people. The kitchen offers a refrigerator, stove, table with chairs, basic cooking and eating utensils, and cookware. The cabin has indoor plumbing, giving guests access to running water, a shower and a flush toilet; however, it is recommended that you bring drinking water. A propane water heater provides hot water.  
  
  
  
The cabin does not have electricity. The fireplace upstairs is usually adequate for heating the guard station during the summer. No flame producing sources are allowed in the cabin, including candles. A campfire ring is just outside.  
  
  
  
Guests need to provide their own food, sleeping bags, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags. An emergency light source is recommended. There is no trash collection; all trash, food, and personal items must be taken with you at check out.  
  
  
  
Campbell Creek Campground, about 1/2 mile east of the La Prele Guard Station, has six campsites that can accommodate tents, campers and trailers up to 22 feet. Campsite #1 can accommodate a longer trailer of 30 feet. 

  
No Vehicle or ORV driving is allowed off the gravel parking area. Unloading/loading and driving from the parking area to Cold Springs Road is the only driving allowed in the compound.

No additional RV's, campers or tents are allowed without prior approval from the Douglas Ranger District Recreational Specialist.

## Natural Features

The guard station sits in a grassy clearing surrounded by a mixed conifer forest at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Mountains define the landscape and La Prele Creek flows nearby.  
  
  
  
Wildlife viewing is abundant near the cabin, including elk and deer. Migratory birds, squirrels and an occasional black bear find habitat in the forest as well.

La Prele Guard Station

Glendo State Park is located in the southeastern part of Wyoming. The reservoir is one of Wyoming’s top walleye fisheries and is known for other water-based recreation. With approximately 12,000 surface acres of water, it gives great opportunity to many different users at the same time. There are six boat launching areas on the park. The park has 21 different camping areas with a total of 568 campsites. Reservations can be made for some of the campsites. There are many picnic shelters to help keep the afternoon sun from beating down on you. Large group shelters are available to reserve for larger gatherings.

Glendo is the home to a newly developed non-motorized trail system. It is slowly becoming a popular destination spot for some of the best mountain biking in Wyoming. There are approximately 45 miles of trails. There are four trailheads at located at Two Moon Campground, the Wetlands Area, the Dam Overlook, and at Sandy Beach Dune Shelter.

Glendo State Park

Custer Cove is a moderately sized, heavily treed campground, which can be most easily accessed from I-25 by getting onto Glendo Park Road, heading south past the main fee booth, and turning left onto Lakeshore Drive. After about 1.5 miles, the campground will be on the right. A shelf of shale and clay surrounds the campground, but gives way to a gently sloped, sandy beach at the southwestern water line. The beach is extensive, and is a popular summer destination for swimmers and all kinds of water recreation. Most of the 20 campsites in Custer Cove have some tree cover, with the exception of sites 6, 9 and 20 which are entirely exposed. Sites 6 and 9 are also the largest, as both are pull-through sites, with a solid gravel base. The other campsites are fairly short and narrow, making them ideal for small RVS and campers, along with tent-camping. Usually, from mid-May to late July the water is high enough that campers at Custer Cove have easy walking access to the water’s edge. As the water level drops, the walk to the shoreline grows longer, but the campground remains one of the closer campgrounds to the water.

**Four wheel drive is recommended for anyone planning to camp in Soldier Rock.**
Soldier Rock is a campground which has three small sections along Lakeshore Drive. Each area provides good access to the water, partially shaded campsites, and several sheltered coves which are excellent spaces for families to gather and spend a day on the lakeshore. All of the campsites in Soldier Rock are fairly primitive, without gravel camping and/or parking pads. Each site is marked by a number sign, a table, and a fire pit. Access roads to each section are narrow and poorly developed, which makes this campground suitable for smaller camping units and tents. 

Soldier Rock - Glendo 

Red Hills is a moderately sized, unique campground situated on a series of hills which slope towards the reservoir. The area takes its name from the deep red rock which surrounds the campground, and forms the steep cliff faces which border much of it. Red Hills has 22 campsites, spread out over a large, generally wooded area. Site one is a back-in with a steep, narrow access road, and as such is ideal for smaller camping units. Sites 2 -5 are large pull through sites, and all have at least partial shade except 2, which has none. All of these sites are a fair distance from the water’s edge, and have no direct water access. Sites 6 through 9 are small sites, suitable for small camping units and/or tent camping. Site 6 has no shade, while the rest in this group have partial shade. This group of sites is on a hill which slopes towards the water, but there is a steep drop off before the shoreline, and as such, these sites don’t have direct water access. The next group of sites includes sites 10 – 15. 10 and 11 are pull-through sites, but 10 is an individual site with no shade, while 11 is a group site with partial shade, which will accommodate 3 camping units. Both 10 and 11 are land-locked, with no direct water access. Sites 12 through 15 are undeveloped sites, and are accessed through a steep, undeveloped access road; four wheel or all-wheel drive is recommended. Site 12 does not have any direct water access, while sites 13-15 are closer. However, as the water drops later in the summer, the access from these sites becomes steeper. The last group of sites includes sites 16 -22, along with the campground’s only toilet. These sites provide the campground’s closest access to the water. Sites 16 and 17 are small back-ins with partial shade and a steep overlook onto the reservoir. Sites 18 through 22 are larger, and are down much closer to the water’s edge, with partial shade. These last four sites are potentially impacted by high water.
