 Deer and antelope still play near the Casper KOA Campground and RV Park. More than 75 percent of the world's pronghorn antelope live within a 90-mile radius of Wyoming's second-largest city. In many places, the Plains look unchanged from the days when the Oregon, California, Mormon, Bridger, Bozeman and Pony Express trails converged here along the North Platte River. Trail ruts are still visible. Visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center or browse pioneer exhibits at the Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site.

The campground is located in the town of Bar Nunn, five miles north of downtown Casper. At an elevation of 5,284 feet, the campground overlooks the City of Casper and commands an excellent view of the city and Casper Mountain to the south. Public tennis and basketball courts and a baseball diamond are located across the street, and golfers can choose from two public courses, one of which was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Or just relax in the big covered pool at the Casper KOA (Memorial Day to Labor Day). The whole family can make itself at home here with mini golf, a playground and a pet walk.

Casper KOA is the only onsite owner operated full service campground in the area. We offer free restrooms with hot showers, a 24 hour coin op laundry and a convenience store and gift shop. And we welcome long-term campers all year round. Please join us on your next trip through Wyoming!

The Buffaloberry Campground is a great site for picnicking, bank fishing and camping. It is about 12 miles from Alcova. It features four overnight camping sites with tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, a vault toilet and parking. Campsites are first come, first served. There is no water available at this campground. The site is ADA accessible.

Under its prescribed function as a reregulating reservoir, the water surface elevation of Gray Reef fluctuates widely from nearly full to nearly empty on a daily basis. A barrier-free fishing pier and restroom are located at Gray Reef Dam. A campground is located below the dam.

Canoes and other small watercraft may be launched from the campground. Available species include brown trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and walleye. Rainbow and cutthroat are stocked in the river below Gray Reef Dam. A boat ramp and parking lot are located downstream of the dam within the campground.

Pete's Draw has both a day-use and overnight camping area to enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, picnicking, fishing, boating and camping. There's a parking area, vault toilet, seven overnight campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, shelters, tent pads, and RV parking, trash receptacle, and a hardened pedestrian trail. No water is available at this campground. Campsites are first come, first served. No overnight parking is allowed in the day use area. This campground receives heavy visitation in the spring and early summer months.

The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

Hell's Half Acre - a geological masterpiece.

To those who have not experienced Hell's Half Acre, the name would suggest a small parcel of land, when in fact, the half acre encompasses more than 300 acres in the middle of the Wyoming prairie, flanked by mountains and valleys. Over fifty million years ago, the Earth was shifting and wreaking havoc. Left behind the restless movements of aging Earth were depressions and breaks in the land. 

Hell's Half Acre is one such eternal depression, complete with jutting rocks, chilling caves and vast valleys.

Explorers to the West were no doubt in awe of of this rare and exciting landform. Who would expect such an out-of-this-world geological event amidst formidable mountains and alkali marshes?

Why "Hell's Half Acre" then? History says that this geological masterpiece was known as "The Devil's Kitchen", "The Pits of Hades", and "The Baby Grand Canyon" until a cowhand appeared and thought he was at Hell's Half Acre, an area southwest of Casper full of alkali and bogs. How could he not tell the difference between bogs and a 300 acre canyon, no one knows. He called it Hell's Half Acre and the name stuck. It's been the world famous Hell's Half Acre ever since, but no matter the name, label, or title you give this landmark, it is a truly fascinating and utterly breathtaking formation in the middle of desolate country.

The landscape is so alien that part of the movie "Starship Troopers" was filmed in this local. Hell's Half Acre was the backdrop for the alien planet Klendathu inhabited by gargantuan, vicious, fighting war bugs.

There are many stories haunting the hills and lurking in the shadows. The ghost of a beautiful young Indian woman moves freely through the canyons, protecting the area and warding off evil. The spirits of tens of thousands of buffalo who perished by plummeting off cliffs now roam the deserted range. It is rumored that a mysterious, dark, unsocial figure lurks inside one of the many dark and labyrinth-type caves. This eerie shadow has been seen by many a weary traveler along Wyoming Highway 20/26, leaving them with the impression that 'something' is there.

President Coolidge can be credited with granting Natrona County the 960 acres encompassing Hell's Half Acre to designate this part located 40 miles northwest of Casper on Highway 20/26.

The Buffalo Creek Campground is about 24 miles north of Arminto. There no fees associated with this campground and also no water is available at this campground. Campsites are first come, first served.
