Pike Pole Campground

Medicine Bow National Forest includes Pike Pole Campground, a US Forest Service site with basic facilities and challenging access. The campground features mostly small sites suitable for tents or single vehicles, with RV length limited to 16 feet maximum. Most sites include fire pits, though only a couple have picnic tables in what reviewers describe as run-down condition.

Access requires careful navigation, particularly from the Encampment direction where campers must route around the A BAR A ranch via Forest Road 512, as other routes encounter locked gates. The road includes switchbacks descending into a canyon with no guardrails and potential wildlife encounters, including bighorn sheep. A single unmaintained toilet serves the area near the trailhead. Dispersed camping options around campgrounds near Medicine Bow National Forest provide more space for larger groups seeking alternatives to the developed sites.

Stayed in the area

Pike pole has mostly small spaces.  Large enough for a tent or a single car.  Great for one or two people.  There are a couple places that could accommodate a few more.  Most seemed to have fire pits.  One or two had picnic tables.  They are very run down.  There is one toilet (unmaintained) at the trail head nearby.  If coming from the Encampment side you must find a route that takes you around the A BAR A ranch.  Two routes bring you through the property--it is gated and locked at the 512Y access.  Only FR 512 will get you there.  Be cautious of the switch backs going down into the canyon. Bighorn sheep wander the hillside and pop up on the road, on coming traffic (rare) are difficult to negotiate, there is no guardrail so presume the shoulder is "soft".  Dispersed camping in the area outside of the campground has much more space for larger groups and campers.
