    Bighorn National Forest

Dispersed Free Camping off Route 20

Driving through Bighorn National Forest we found TONS of free dispersed camping off route 20.

Sites are primitive… No running water, no electric, no restrooms. Sites consist of previously used dispersed site containing clearing and fire pits. There are camping spots for tents and RVs from large to small. If the first spot doesn’t suit you just keep traveling down route 20 to the next.

Far apart and lots of privacy.

We camped along a stream in a 32 foot RV. We were visited by a mother and baby moose.

If you are seeking privacy, this is your place.

No facilities, stores or cell service. You must be prepared and self sufficient.

    Island Park Campground

    Stream runs behind it

Decent, small campground. Few sites are level. Fire pit needed cleaning. Toilets were clean. Camp hosts on site, but never came by. Evidently there was a family reunion of sorts so some noise. They kayaked on the stream behind the camp sites.

    Lazy R Campground

Convenient & Quiet with Onsite Bakery

We picked the Lazy R for a quick overnight stay on trip to Missoula, MT.  We weren't expecting much, given that we were tent campers staying in an RV park.  However, we were pleasantly surprised we arrived to find a nice grassy campsite for a our tent and clean restrooms and showers.  The following morning, we opted to skip making coffee and oatmeal for breakfast and instead visited the onsite bakery.  Winner, winner, chicken dinner!  Hard to beat rolling out of your tent, walking 100 feet and getting reasonably priced gourmet coffee and fresh baked pastries for breakfast.  I will definitely stay here again.

    Greybull KOA

One of the best for an overnight stay

I can’t think of one negative comment, even the towns 9 o’clock curfew alarm was charming. The concrete sites are level and spacious with tables, fire pits and charcoal grills. The grounds are well cared with a small playground and dog run. Staff are friendly and helpful. There is a paved walk just steps out of the campground where we took a walk and watched deer. We only stayed one night but wish that all our campgrounds could be like this one.

    Island Park Campground

    Beautiful setting

Small but busy park. Best sites for views are along creek where you can watch moose beaver and trout in creek and meadow. Can get noisy before quiet hours. A lot of people drive through looking for campsite and kids were rambunctious when we were there. Great camp host

    Lazy R Campground

    Loved this one!

We stayed here for 3 nights on our trip from Texas. Quiet, pet and kid friendly, and the staff was great! Clean grounds that they are constantly working on- and the bakery was delicious for breakfast. Close to Montana, Big Horn National park, Sheridan, etc. great location! But the staff was just above and beyond- so friendly, so helpful, and we’d stay here again!

    Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

    Typical KOA

Staff here is wonderful...friendly & helpful. Campground is cleaner than most, showers & bathrooms also were clean. Big Goose Creek runs alongside the campground, and downtown Sheridan is just a few miles away. But it's expensive (almost $60 for water/electric only), the campground is between the freeway and train tracks, & RV spaces are stacked together like sardines. But sometimes a night at a KOA is necessary, and the welcoming staff makes it bearable.

    Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

    Typical Family-oriented Campground

We came here to Sheridan Wyoming in May 2021. Friendly people and camp was nearly full. Weather was windy and in the high 40’s in the daytime. The camp is very close to the highway and close to town. Easy to get to surrounding areas but you need a car. Our spot was near the pool but it was far too cold and not yet set up. The facilities were very clean and the showers we nice snd hot.I felt safe and comfortable. Very close to highway and train tracks so that you can easily hear both when sleeping (use ear plugs). Easy to get back on I-90 due to proximity of highway to camp. We were also charged an additional $11.00 upon check-in for reasons unexplained.

    Lazy R Campground

    Lazy R Campground, WY

We visited because the campground was only a short drive to the Big Horn Mountains which are gorgeous and worth seeing. The campground has a cute bakery and store which you should have breakfast at and order their homemade biscuits. The showers and bathrooms were sufficient. There are a lot of full-timers staying, so it seems like they are used regularly. We weren’t greeted by anyone when we arrived and nobody was available if we had a question. Overall we’d recommend the campground for its location.
