With 10 sites managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Gray Reef Reservoir operates year-round at rates from free to $10 per night. The campground accommodates RVs up to 35 feet and provides vault toilets, a dump station, and picnic tables. Access comes via paved and gravel roads, though some visitors report navigation challenges with GPS routing.
The reservoir and adjacent dam create the campground's defining feature. Site 5 sits on the reservoir side, separated from other sites across the dam structure. Joe T. notes the "nice roar from the water flowing over the spillway at the small dam" that provides constant background sound. Most sites offer limited shade, which can make daytime temperatures uncomfortable during summer months, though the evening mountain views provide compensation.
Fishing opportunities exist at the reservoir, and the clean facilities make this a practical overnight stop for travelers. The campground serves as a base for exploring places to camp around Alcova and the surrounding recreation area. Sites can be accessed by vehicle, boat, or on foot depending on your approach to the water.
Reserve ahead during peak season, as the limited number of sites fills quickly despite the remote location.
