Beautiful lake down the road from several towns

This rustic campground is a bit off the beaten path but it’s still close to area fun. Starrett Lake is beautiful and larger than we expected. We could hear loons within a short time of our arrival. The campground splits into two loops each having two vault toilets. Water from a hand pump is available. This is a quiet spot to relax in. The challenge at this campground turned out to be finding a level spot. Sites vary but advance reservations are needed so we just dealt with it. We moved to a mostly level spot at our site and it was ok. The road into camp was paved until the last couple miles. The dirt road only had a bit of washboard so we just took our time. We rode our bikes back down the road and was able to pick up the paved bike trail at the corner store in Sayner. (They have ice cream there). You can ride the bike trail into many local towns. The camp host is a nice guy who came over to chat. He plans to finish the trail around Starrett Lake so it might be ready for next year. He said I could try it now but suggested the hike at Fallison Lake would be better this time. We walked down the road to Aurora Lake. It’s just over 3 miles round trip. We found a peaceful spot where we could chill and enjoy the waves. If you have a small boat, there is a tiny island in the lake waiting to be explored.
