    Wedges Creek Hideaway

Rustic Glamping - exactly what we were looking for

This is a diamond in the rough - exactly what we wanted on our journey.  Our criteria - less than $100, pet friendly and rustic.

This is a sawmill that has it all - they run the mill when needed, but also have primitive cabins (where we stayed), full cabins with in house bath, electric RV/tent camping and more. Even wood fired pizzas with homemade crust most nights of the week and sometimes live music!

We were in cabin #3 - rustic.  Yes - it did have heat!  A little ceramic heater had it so toasty when it was 30 degrees outside we actually turned it off - so it's sure to please on chilly nights.  The interior was amazing - lumber that I'm sure came from the mill and ceiling planks that were gorgeous - left over planks from many years ago, stored in a shed and re-purposed for the cabin. The bed was very comfortable with clean sheets and squishy (in a good way) pillows. A small covered front porch and we just parked in front.

Bathroom - if you are in a cabin without a bath, it's very nearby. One of the largest, cleanest bathrooms I've seen.  He built it himself. Women's had 2 sinks with a large vanity area, about 3 stalls (very large - you don't have to squish into them) and two very large shower stalls with full doors - not shower curtains. Heated as well.

Pets - easy pet policy. Just let the owner know and it's no problem as long as you are responsible, pick up after them and leash them when necessary.  Just a small charge for them and they were very welcomed here.

He even has event space indoors (heated) and outdoors for weddings and such.  And hiking trails (6 miles) if you choose to take on the outdoors.

The owner plans on adding saunas and a hot tub in the near future - so this would be the place to drop for a while if you want something out of the norm, peaceful, rustic and relaxing. It's off the main road, behind a field in Amish Country.  Lovely place to stay for the night. Very quiet.

    Indian Shores

Indian Shores - a worthy desination in Wisconsin’s Northwoods

This is a larger campground with a good mix of seasonal and weekend campsites. The majority of the weekend campsites are located near the prime activity locations; the pool, playground and lake areas. There are full sun and full shade sites available. The Shady sites are amongst the evergreens, so they tend to be sandier. The full sun sites are all grass. All of the sites have a gravel pad to park on; the exception to this are the lakeside sites which are concrete pads. There is a camp store and a good sized bar & grill. The weekend we were here it rained non-stop, so we did not get to use any of the available canoe/kayak/fishing boat/pontoon boat rentals. We did make ample use of the mini-golf, playground, and heated swimming pool though. The pool was warm enough that even the non-stop rain did not cool it down enough to be uncomfortable. The seasonal campers I met and talked with were all friendly and did not have the “why are you here” attitude I occasionally come across when staying at seasonal heavy resorts. I did see several people fishing in the rain and pulling keepers out of the lake to be cleaned and cooked. They were fishing from the docks. Our kids are 7 & 10 and they were never bored. There were a couple trails within the campground that were good for nature hikes. If it were a little closer to home, this campground would be on the shortlist of places to have a seasonal site at.

    West Bay Camping Resort

    Quiet woods

Located down a quiet paved road just 2 miles outside of town. You are close to the action but dont have to listen to it.

Some sites are tight/close and others you could turn around in. Most are fairly level or it doesnt take much to make your camper level. Very little grass at site but you get a picnik table and a fire pit. Wood must be bought at the store but pay attention to the hours as they close early. Plenty of mosquitoes but you are in the woods. Daytime they arent too bad.

    Bathrooms were very clean.

Full hookups, no wifi or at least we couldnt find it. Dogs are welcomed , no barking allowed. Cell phone service was good so you can work if you have too. AT&T and Verizon.

Passport America discount honored for 7 days and Coast to Coast.

Plenty of rules but we will have this on our return list.

    Aweful Management

I truly wish I could give Zero stars for this park. The park itself is in a nice location, but the manager has clearly chosen the wrong career path. We had nothing but electrical issues the entire time we stayed there in a very hot part of summer and the managers answer to the problem when I brought it to her attention was, “don’t run the a/c if you’re having issues, no one else seems to have a problem!” On top of that there is a sign forbidding just about everything you can think of posted everywhere at this park....save your time and go elsewhere.

    Comfort Cove Resort

    Overall great with all amenties.

We love this as a “go to” place for family. The lake location is perfect with both sunsets and coves. There are cabins as well as a few tent/rv campsites and a wonderful bar/restaurant on site. You can boat to a number of other bars and restaurants as well. The only negatives are that it is a bit crowded at times and the bathrooms are fairly simple.

    West Bay Camping Resort

    Nice but older

The campground was peaceful. A little dated and the websites amenities were a little stretch. Beautiful lake access with small beach. Has heated swimming pool but was closed for season. Does have a wildlife school across the road with free trails you can walk.

    Patricia Lake Campground

    Mostly Seasonal Campers

This is our second stay, once in 2020 and now 2023. Both times were just for a couple nights. Great location to explore Minocqua. The campground is comprised mostly of seasonal folks, but offers 20 some sights to non-seasonal. Sites are relatively spaced apart for a private campground and offer FHU’s for those needing to stay a night or two to dump tanks, etc. A bit pricey, but if you spend most of your time boondocking it’s a good fit. Good Verizon signal and they have cable TV hookup.

Guide to Westboro

Cabins near Westboro, Wisconsin offer outdoors-focused accommodations within Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest at elevations around 1,500 feet. Northern Wisconsin's climate brings warm summer days with cooler nights, even during July and August when temperatures average 75-80°F during the day and 55-60°F overnight. Several properties offer seasonal amenities with private beach access or heated facilities to accommodate temperature fluctuations.

What to do

Paddle whitewater routes: Flambeau Lodge and Campground provides easy access to the Flambeau River with varying kayaking difficulty levels. "Flambeau river offers white water kayaking from beginner to expert. No cell service in area. Print maps," advises Loren S., highlighting the importance of preparation before hitting the rapids.

Explore wildlife trails: Located across from West Bay Camping Resort, a wildlife school maintains free public trails open seasonally. "Has wildlife school across the road with free trails you can walk," notes Stephen M., providing budget-friendly activity options for campers seeking nature education opportunities.

Try night fishing: Indian Shores offers productive evening fishing from their docks. "I did see several people fishing in the rain and pulling keepers out of the lake to be cleaned and cooked. They were fishing from the docks," shares Mike W., demonstrating the effectiveness of shoreline fishing even during inclement weather.

What campers like

Heated swimming options: Several properties maintain heated pools that remain comfortable regardless of weather. West Bay Camping Resort offers "heated swimming pool" according to Stephen M., though visitors should verify seasonal availability as facilities typically close after Labor Day.

Wood-fired pizza nights: Wedges Creek Hideaway hosts regular food events with entertainment during summer months. "Even wood fired pizzas with homemade crust most nights of the week and sometimes live music!" reports Amy G., describing an unexpected amenity at this working sawmill property.

Quiet forest settings: Campgrounds like Flambeau Lodge and Campground prioritize natural surroundings. "Campground is thickly wooded. Bathroom and showers on sight," notes Loren S., emphasizing the secluded atmosphere maintained at properties further from town centers.

What you should know

Reservation cancellation policies: Policies vary significantly between properties with some enforcing strict non-refundable deposits. "We had to cancel our reservation due to medical, we did give 1 month notice but the owner would not return the 1/2 down payment," reports Bill B. about Arbor Vitae Campground, suggesting travelers confirm cancellation terms before booking.

Electrical considerations: Some properties experience capacity issues during peak demand. West Bay Camping Resort had reports of inconsistent electrical service with one camper noting, "We had nothing but electrical issues the entire time we stayed there in a very hot part of summer," according to Vincent S.

Bathroom facilities: Wedges Creek Hideaway maintains exceptionally clean shared bathroom facilities for cabin guests. "One of the largest, cleanest bathrooms I've seen. He built it himself. Women's had 2 sinks with a large vanity area, about 3 stalls and two very large shower stalls with full doors - not shower curtains," details Amy G.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Indian Shores positions weekend sites near recreational facilities. "The majority of the weekend campsites are located near the prime activity locations; the pool, playground and lake areas," explains Mike W., making this layout convenient for families with children.

Dog-friendly areas: Patricia Lake Campground provides dedicated pet recreation spaces. "Large fenced in dog run and also area for dogs to swim," mentions Becky M., offering specialized amenities for traveling with canine companions.

Rainy day options: Some properties maintain indoor facilities for inclement weather. "The weekend we were here it rained non-stop, so we did not get to use any of the available canoe/kayak/fishing boat/pontoon boat rentals. We did make ample use of the mini-golf, playground, and heated swimming pool though," shares Mike W. about Indian Shores.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Comfort Cove Resort and Campground and other properties have varied terrain. "Most are fairly level or it doesn't take much to make your camper level," reports Charles M. about West Bay Camping Resort, suggesting minimal blocking needed at most sites.

Hookup safety: Electrical connections at some properties lack safety disconnects. "Electricity has no breakers to shut the juice off before hook up which is very dangerous. Water is good pressure," warns Wayne O. about Arbor Vitae Campground, suggesting RVers bring their own circuit protection.

Firewood delivery: Some properties offer convenient wood service to your site. Victoria G. notes about West Bay Camping Resort, "purchased firewood and so nice that they delivered," eliminating the need to transport wood within the campground.
