The driftless region surrounding Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin features unglaciated terrain with deep valleys, limestone outcroppings, and elevations ranging from 800-1,200 feet. Winter temperatures typically dip to the single digits while summer highs reach the mid-80s. Equestrian camping options near Prairie du Sac provide specialized amenities for both riders and horses with access to extensive trail networks throughout the region.
What to do
Trail riding at Cox Hollow: Take your horses on the extensive trail system at Cox Hollow Campground where trails connect to scenic points throughout the 5,000-acre property. "There are lots of good hiking trails and they are working on a big improvement to the equestrian campground. Lots of activities in the area and close to shopping in the town of Dodgeville," notes Paul C.
Swimming at Yellowstone Lake: Cool off after a day of riding at the beach area at Yellowstone Lake State Park Campground where you can swim and relax. "The lake is gorgeous though, nice beach too," shares Kristina K. The park also offers boat rentals for a different perspective of the landscape.
Wildlife viewing: Bring binoculars to spot local wildlife while exploring the parks. "There are lots of wildlife to enjoy and Yellowstone. A beautiful park and tons of hiking and nice lake," reports Mallory M. Bald eagles are common sightings throughout the region's parks and waterways.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Campers appreciate the spacious layout at Lake Kegonsa State Park Campground where vegetation provides separation. "Large private sites with good space between them in a lovely wooded setting. Very nice hiking trails right from campground. Lake & pet swim area," explains Kathy L.
Walk-in site seclusion: For those wanting more isolation, select walk-in sites offer greater privacy. "Site 271 was just enough of a walk to feel remote but not so far that I couldn't carry all my stuff. The sites close to the road are not private at all," shares Mary M. from Twin Valley Campground.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain consistent cleanliness standards. "Bathrooms/showers were warm and clean, and the vault toilets were not bad although there were a few spiders," reports Siobhan R. The park staff regularly service facilities even during busy periods.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Secure sites well in advance, especially for equestrian camping. "Peak season reservations are a definite (weeks to months in advance for weekends)," advises Jen L. Holiday weekends fill up fastest, especially for electric sites.
Weather considerations: Wisconsin weather can change quickly. "The first weekend in October can sometimes be a little iffy weather wise, but we lucked out with pretty warm temperatures. We got quite a bit of rain on Saturday," recalls Siobhan R. Pack layers and rain gear regardless of season.
Campfire restrictions: Fire rings are standard at most sites with firewood available for purchase. "Firewood for sale, great wifi, clean bathhouses/rooms," notes Michael D. at Merry Mac's Campground. Expect to pay $5-7 per bundle depending on the park.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Choose campgrounds with dedicated play areas and water activities. "Super fun campground with so much to do! Lots of games for all up by lodge. DJ dance party on the deck at night. Lake full of all kinds of floats the kids can climb and jump on. Clean pool to cool off in," recommends Tracy C.
Wildlife awareness: Prepare children for wildlife encounters, particularly at night. "Beware of raccoons at this campground they are BOLD! Personally I came here as a child, back in the later 60's to early 70's," shares Patti M. from Sleepy Dragon Campground.
Activity planning: Structure days around morning and evening rides with afternoon water activities. "Perfect for a family get away - showers, flush toilets, lots of hiking (but trails aren't very challenging), swimming area and boat launch, playground. Basically a little bit of everything that makes it family friendly," suggests Jen L.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for leveling: Research site topography before booking. "If camping with a trailer or RV check to make sure you will get a campsite that is level enough for your vehicle. Lots of the campsites are uneven and larger vehicles may have issues getting level," advises Jeanne M.
Utility connections: Not all equestrian sites offer full hookups. At White Mound County Campground, "The sites were deep, so you could pull in and nestle in the trees, even if you had a neighbor, and it was more private. The pad we pulled into was fairly level and covered in pea gravel," reports Amy G.
Size restrictions: Some horse campgrounds near Prairie du Sac limit RV length. "Great campground for everything but big 5th wheelers and motorhomes," cautions Paul C. Call ahead to confirm your rig will fit comfortably in available equestrian sites.
