    Council Grounds State Park Campground

    Wonderful

We love it here and can’t wait to go back and camp again. Tall trees, peaceful, quiet, new fire pits, good bathrooms. Friendly attendant at welcome station. Abundant firewood right at entrance. We may choose a different site next time as ours was a bit close to our neighbors, but really not a deal breaker! We just prefer a little more privacy, but even with that we’d camp at this site again. Trail to river is short and easy to access. Lots of places along river to geocache, walk, or just relax and watch the world go by.

    Quiet woods

Located down a quiet paved road just 2 miles outside of town. You are close to the action but dont have to listen to it.

Some sites are tight/close and others you could turn around in. Most are fairly level or it doesnt take much to make your camper level. Very little grass at site but you get a picnik table and a fire pit. Wood must be bought at the store but pay attention to the hours as they close early. Plenty of mosquitoes but you are in the woods. Daytime they arent too bad.

    Bathrooms were very clean.

Full hookups, no wifi or at least we couldnt find it. Dogs are welcomed , no barking allowed. Cell phone service was good so you can work if you have too. AT&T and Verizon.

Passport America discount honored for 7 days and Coast to Coast.

Plenty of rules but we will have this on our return list.

    Chippewa NF Campground

    Relax in the Woods

There are tons of sites across three loops, spaced apart with picnic tables, fire pits, and plenty of room. Most sites are level– we were only staying one night and didn’t even need to unhook our pickup. The lake is very close with a trail to a beach and dock. The bathrooms have flush toilets and showers. We didn’t have our ATVs with us, but the trails looked like narrow gravel roads. It wasn’t busy– on a Thursday in July only about¼ of the sites were taken. We had one bar on Verizon.

    Council Grounds State Park Campground

    Nice wooded campground

Stayed here one night while driving home from Lake Superior. I found this to be a pricey evening as you have to pay for a day use fee as well as a camping fee. But, it was all in all a nice campground. The shower house was clean, the campsites were wooded and well spaced out, and there were a couple of trails that went from the campground to the beach, boat ramps, or in the opposite direction, just nice walking/hiking trails. There seemed to be plenty of spots along the Wisconsin River or on Alexander Lake to fish if that’s your thing and you have a license. You can buy firewood up front at the ranger station. The park road went behind my campsite between me and the river, but it wasn’t too noisy as it was set back about 100 yards from the campground and there were plenty of trees to break the noise.

Clear Lake Campground — Northern Highland State Forest

    Beautiful Beach Camping

We stayed for a week in the Indian Mounds loop camground. This site is a few miles from the camp registration but worth it. There is a paved bike path through the woods all the way to the registraion area. We arrived at our campsite, unloaded the bikes, then proceeded to ride to check in. However, this is easily driveable as well. This is one of my favorite campgrounds for our lifestyle. Several of the most desired sites are on the water. These are particularly great because we can park our boat right at our site, they face west for sunsets, and the beach is absolutely perfect. The campground is on a large chain of lakes. I recommend heading into the town of Minocqua for shopping or just a night on the town. Hiking/biking trails are very close by. In fact, some of the best ones are right next to 5e camp registration. The lake is one of the cleanest ive ever been on. Campmsites are reasonably far from each other for privacy. Two swiming beaches are within a 2 minute walk from all camsites. Keep in mind, this review is onlynfor the indian mounds loop.

    Nice but older

The campground was peaceful. A little dated and the websites amenities were a little stretch. Beautiful lake access with small beach. Has heated swimming pool but was closed for season. Does have a wildlife school across the road with free trails you can walk.

    Halloween starts early here!

This weekend there was a screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas (one of our favorites) and loads of cool decked out campsites. Only a few places with full hook up and ALL by the dump station. Nice amenities, lake, splash pads, mini golf, splash pad outdoor pool, golf car rentals, outdoor movies, a full size haunted house!

Guide to Merrill

Council Grounds State Park Campground provides a variety of camping options near Merrill within a mature woodland setting bordered by the Wisconsin River. The campground sits at approximately 1,300 feet elevation in northern Wisconsin's mixed deciduous and coniferous forest region. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing with summer highs reaching the 80s, creating distinct seasonal camping experiences.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Council Grounds offers multiple fishing access points along the Wisconsin River. "We camped here many times in my childhood. Beautiful forest, boating, dam views along the Wisconsin River," notes Chad P. about Council Grounds State Park Campground.

Kayaking and paddleboarding: Rentals are available seasonally at some campgrounds in the area. "We enjoyed being able to rent kayaks and paddleboards and relax on the beach," shares Tate T. who visited with a group of 12 people.

Cross-country skiing: Winter recreation options expand beyond summer activities. According to Rebecca B. from Clear Lake Campground, "Camping, hiking, boating, cross country skiing. This park has a lot to offer. Not as crowded as some other state parks its a nice relaxing place to be."

What campers like

Wooded campsites: Many campers appreciate the natural setting. "Sites are wooded and offer plenty of shade. Well spaced so you feel like you're all alone," explains Erin A. who found Council Grounds State Park ideal for dry camping.

Geocaching opportunities: The area provides numerous geocaching locations for treasure hunters. "We had the perfect set up.. right on the water and tucked into the woods. Our neighbors were to far to hear us and the bathrooms were near by! We had a beautiful sunset every night and even got to see a double rainbow. Geocaching is hot in this area too!" shares Jaimie G. about Cunnard Lake.

Wildlife viewing: The surrounding forests support diverse animal populations. "We even got to see some otters in the pond," mentions Elizabeth who stayed at Birkensee Campground for a glamping experience near Merrill.

What you should know

Non-motorized lake options: Some lakes in the area restrict motorized watercraft. "Cunard Lake allows non motorized watercrafts and has a great swimming area. You will wake up to the sound of loons and go to bed with the sound of them," writes AnneMarie C., highlighting the peaceful atmosphere at Cunnard Lake Campground.

Limited hiking trails: While scenic, some parks have shorter trail systems. "Hiking trails were ok, routing throughout the park. Not very long, only one to two miles per trail, but well maintained," shares Amy E. about Council Grounds State Park.

Quiet campground designations: Some campgrounds have specific noise restrictions. "Lake Cunard campground was designated a 'Quiet' campground several years ago - one of only two in the 18 different Northern Highlands American Legion state forest campgrounds. That means no 'noise producing devices', including generators, radios, TV's, video games, guitars, etc," explains S P.

Tips for camping with families

Beach and swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature water access for children. "What a gorgeous state park! From the moment you enter, you are in awe of the landscape. Trees tower above you as you drive through the park. Water was refreshing and there is a small beach area," shares Amanda G. who visited Council Grounds State Park with a group.

Group site considerations: When camping with larger family groups, specific sites work better than others. "For this particular trip, we reserved group sites A and B. They each have concrete pads for 3 campers and TONS of space to spread out and/or set up tents," notes Amanda G.

Kid-friendly water activities: Some resorts offer additional attractions beyond natural features. "Has a nice sand beach with clear water for swimming, as well as a pool area that are both great for the kids. There's also a few animals that you can go over and feed if you like," writes Joe W. about Pine Grove Campground.

Tips for RVers

Electric hookup availability: Many campgrounds offer electrical connections but may have limitations. "The campsites were clean and spacious, we had enough room in our site for a tent, screen tent, and a boat," notes Amy E. who appreciated the spacious sites at Council Grounds.

Dump station access: Consider waste disposal options when planning your stay. "There is a dump station nearby behind the city garage for $10," shares Sharen who stayed at Sara Park.

Site leveling requirements: Be prepared for various site conditions. "Dirt pads but fairly level in our spot," mentions Erin A. about Council Grounds, though she cautions that heavy rain created drainage issues during her stay.
