    Great Location and Nice Staff

This is a  private campground that fills up quick.    It is 1 mile from Bayfield town center.  It is close to the ferry dock, restaurants, parks and beaches.  All sites are electric and water and some are full hook up.  There are cabins and tent sites as well.   The office/store is very clean and stocked with things you may need.  8 flavor ice creams on site!  There is a  dump station and picnic tables and fire rings at each site.   There is free wi-fi and a shower house, bathrooms and laundry.

Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park

Nice Location, fairly open fields and not marked well.

Great location, and has the basics for the camping.  I was in site 44, and most of the sites in the "middle" were more of an open field with a couple of trees.  There were no real clear boundary lines .  If you are looking for a little more shade or tree cover, book a perimeter site.  This is also the first campsite I've been to where the fire pit didn't have a grill grate on part of it.  There is water on site, but it is the hand pump style, so it would help to have a large open container to capture the water.

Cell service was really spot (can be a good thing when camping), and I wasn't able to pick up a lot of radio stations either.  Still nice to enjoy the quite dark skies.  Short walk down stairs to Lake Superior which offered some great sunset views.

Lots of great hiking trails, and close to a lot of other fun attractions.  I would plan on coming back up here another time, and possible pick a different site after being here.

Ottawa National Forest Black River Harbor Campground

    You Are On Your Own

The first four days were five stars. The campground was mostly full of tents, pop ups, small trailers, and a few 5ers and Class As. The site was clean and groomed. Spacing is nice and provides some privacy. The location is secluded with an easy walk to a quiet stretch of Lake Superior shoreline. The waterfalls in the area are a don't miss attraction. For a longer day trip the State Park to the east was magnificent as was Copper Peak.

The last three nights were 1 star. A large open frame generator ran 24/7 the entire time. The "camper" said quiet hours were only for TVs and radios. The generator ran even while they left the campsite. The owner ignored all requests to honor the quiet hours and insulted anyone that asked. We were three campsites away and it interfered with our sleep.

There are no camp hosts, no cellar coverage, and the Rangers do not answer knocks on the door at their offices about 20 miles away. You are on your own.

    So many tall pines!!

I love campgrounds where you get to camp amongst the tall pines (not sure what kind they are)! Large campground with lots of amenities! Right off the highway so you will get some road noise even at night. But if you're lucky to have a site farther from the road you really can't hear much!

Amenities: pool, kamping kitchen, pavillion, snack bar ($), mini golf ($), bike rentals ($), wi-fi, propane ($), firewood ($), fenced in dog area (KampK9), bag toss, two playgrounds, basketball, horseshoes, tetherball, arcade/game room, Friday s'more party, volleyball, and themed weekends!

Best spot to explore the Apostle islands

This is the best base camp for exploring the Apostle islands. It’s about a mile from Bayfield. There is bike rental at Howl bike shop which is walking distance. Howl also has a brewery with outside seating. The camp ground itself is quiet and clean. We didn’t go in the bathrooms or use the washers due to Covid. Owners are very accommodating.

Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park

Great Campground for exploring, and for those who love waterfalls.

If you're a person who loves waterfalls, then I recommend you don’t miss this campground.  Presque Isle Campground is located at the southern edge of the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  This campground has bluff overlooking Lake Superior, there is a walkway and stairs that take you down the bluff to the shore.  Walking distance from the campground is the Presque River you can hike along and see all the beautiful waterfalls this river has to offer.  This is a Rustic campground that has vault toilets, and hand pump drinking water. The campground, restrooms and surrounding area’s were kept very clean. There are 50 campsites that are equipped for tents, trailers, and RV’s.  Each site has a fire pit, and picnic table.  There is no electrical hook up, and part of the campground is generator free.  Six of the sites are walk in sites, there are parking spots for these sites, you park and walk in a little ways to your site.  I recommend a site that is located on the outer sides of the campground loop.  They are larger sites and more privacy from your neighbors.  Inner loop sites are closer together and open.  Be prepared for mosquitoes and blackflies.  Blackflies bite, and bug spray does not affect them.  I found keeping a hand towel or fly swatter moving around me helped keep them away.  They are more active when it is humid, and down by the water.  These flies seem to be common up here along the shore.

There are many things to do around the campground close to your site and others are a little bit of a drive from your site in the Porcupine Mountains State Park.  If you like to stay close to your camp, you can hang out on the beach, hike along the Presque Isle River and discover the Manabezho Falls, Manido Falls, and the Nawadaha Falls.  Also the Lake Superior Trail and North Country Trail are right by the campground.  These trails will connect you with other trails in the Porcupine Mountains.  The Porcupine Mountains have lot’s to offer anyone stopping to visit.  We took and day and seen The Lake of the Clouds, and Summit Peak.  They both are gorgeous areas to explore.

Apostle Islands Area RV park and Camping

Perfect destination to camp by kayak

We kayaked to many campgrounds and islands in the national lakeshore. paddling a total of 60 miles we were able to make it to 3 different island campgrounds. Bathrooms and picnic tables were at most camp sites, some camp sites were very desolate and rustic. No running water on some islands.

What to do

Waterfall hikes: 4-mile trail at Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park follows the Presque Isle River with multiple waterfalls. "The hiking throughout this park is unparalleled in its beauty. The campground is close to the Presque Isle river trail which is waterfall after waterfall," notes Stacia R.

Lake Superior beaches: 15-minute walk from Black River Harbor Campground provides access to quiet Lake Superior shoreline. "A beautiful harbor on Lake Superior surrounded with by a cornucopia of natural beauty. Five named waterfalls that are simply amazing, each awe inspiring along with several hidden un-named falls," writes Thomas F.

Winter ski attractions: 20-minute drive to Copper Peak ski flying facility, the only one in North America. "Not too far away is Copper Peak, the only ski flying facility in North America. In the summer you can ride up to the top to see pretty far. It's not for the faint of heart," explains Annie C.

UTV/ATV trail access: Direct from campsite at Schomberg Park. "This is a perfect small sized campground with trail access to UTV/ATV trails. If you are coming here to ride I would recommend going west on the trail," advises Juliana R.

What campers like

Lake views from elevated sites: Apostle Islands Area Campground provides strategic access to island ferry services. "Great area near all there is to do in Bayfield," says Katherine O., while another camper adds, "I highly recommend doing some sort of tour of the Apostle Islands by boat and taking the ferry to Madeline Island."

Secluded tent camping: Densely wooded sites provide privacy at some campgrounds. "We camped at Presque Isle in the Porkies for a long weekend in October. The color change was amazing! This campground is rustic with only vault toilets and no hookups... Spacing is nice and provides some privacy," reports Stacia R.

Yurt accommodations: Year-round options for yurt camping near Mellen, Wisconsin allow for four-season experiences. According to Jen W., Presque Isle offers "Yurts and Cabins available. Definitely Seasonal. The road is not plowed completely in winter."

River access: Multiple campgrounds feature water proximity. "Very wooded, big lots not at all over crowded and quiet!! Cheap boat and pontoon rental, very friendly and kind staff," writes Eve about Reel Livin Resort and Campground.

What you should know

Generator restrictions: Designated zones at some campgrounds separate generator and non-generator users. "There are 50 sites, with generator and non-generator sites clearly separated... On the non-generator side sites on the outside of the loop back to either the woods or the lake and have great hammocking options," explains Annie C.

Accessibility challenges: Steep terrain at certain campgrounds affects mobility. "Park is located on the side of a hill—Spots are small but level, roads are all at a slope. Not a great campground for kiddos to ride their bikes, and not super fun to walk uphill in every direction," warns Nick & Allyssa S.

Cell service limitations: Spotty coverage throughout region. "No cellar coverage, and the Rangers do not answer knocks on the door at their offices about 20 miles away. You are on your own," cautions Jim W.

Seasonal facility closures: Some campgrounds reduce services after Labor Day. A camper noted, "It was very quiet even though it was close to Labor Day weekend, and for the size of the campground."

Tips for camping with families

Recreational activities: Multiple options at Hayward KOA keep children engaged. "Awesome spot for kids! Lots for them to do. Sites are kinda close but landscape is great," says Gwen C., while another visitor mentions, "Great campground to stay with family! Campground was kept very clean, even though it is an older campground."

Adventure camping: Wilderness options for experienced families. "A few friends of mine got together one weekend to camp at Porcupine Lake Wilderness. Overall, it was a beautiful place to camp. This particular weekend, it snowed and words could not describe how amazing it was," shares Joshua S.

Proximity to services: Plan for distance from major retail. One camper advised, "Not super spacious but the place is clean and the people are friendly. The bar & grill have a decent menu and the thin crust pizza was yummy."

Tips from RVers

Site limitations: Space constraints at Frontier RV Park and Campground affect larger vehicles. "Very nice park with several new lots that are all grass with water and electric. Several lots are full hookup. There is not a true dump station, only a spot near the bathroom that you can pull up to dump, but then you have to back out of it," Jim M. notes.

Tree clearance: Older campgrounds present navigation challenges. "Love all this campsite has to offer with amenities! Beautiful area as well. But there are alot of trees that make it very challenging for larger rigs. There are a handful of sites that would be easy to access, I recommend calling first," advises Sheila H. about Hayward KOA.

Full hookup availability: Limited options in more remote areas. "We were told the toilets didn't work because there was a piece on order for over 2 weeks, the sinks weren't working so we couldn't use those either, but you could get a hot shower for a $0.25," reports Karen B.

Winter accessibility: Most campgrounds close or reduce services October through April. According to visitor reports, roads remain unplowed in many areas, though yurt camping near Mellen, Wisconsin continues year-round at select locations.
