Best Cabin Camping near Haugen, WI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Rustic cabin accommodations dot the landscape surrounding Haugen, Wisconsin, with most offering basic amenities like electricity and heat for year-round comfort. Country Quiet RV Park and Campground provides cabin rentals with picnic tables and fire rings, while Lake Chippewa Campground features cabins with full hookup options. A review mentioned that "the camper cabins had electricity and heat, no plumbing. Excellent fire ring for cooking." Bathrooms range from shared facilities with showers to primitive setups requiring guests to use communal restrooms, which are generally well-maintained throughout the region's campgrounds.

Options range from tiny log cabins to spacious family-sized layouts. Log Cabin Resort and Campground in Trego operates seasonally from May through mid-October, offering waterfront cabin accommodations with boat access. Most area cabins accommodate 4-6 people with varying bed configurations. Pet policies differ between properties—Hayward KOA allows pets in certain cabins while others maintain strict no-pet rules. "We stayed here in mid April, I believe we stayed at Camper Cabin #6. The site was beautiful, the cabin well kept," noted one visitor, adding that "the cabins are nearby a trail that you can wander through the woods down to the river."

Most cabins include beds with mattresses but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary widely from primitive setups with only outdoor fire rings to more equipped options with small refrigerators and microwaves. Firewood is typically available for purchase at campgrounds, with prices around $6 per bundle at state parks. On-site camp stores at larger establishments like Hayward KOA stock essential supplies, though selection is limited. A camper wrote that "the fire ring was clean and had a grate on top," which proves useful for simple meal preparation when cabins lack indoor cooking facilities.

    Wild River State Park Campground

Wild River State Park Camper Cabin

The camper cabins at Wild River are located just above the St. Croix River. Our cabin seemed to be at a trailhead to the river, which we took advantage of. The camper cabins had electricity and heat, no plumbing. Excellent fire ring for cooking. The park itself has many trails.

    Wild River State Park Campground

One of the better state park campgrounds we've stayed at

We were at site 93. It's a large site with plenty of room for a huge tent or a few tents. It was very buggy so we got a screen tent. Nicely shaded site as well. Not far from the water station and pit toilet. For a bathroom with running water it's a long walk and there's not close parking either. The campground is a long drive into the park from the main entrance. 12x10 screen tent fit easily over the 8' picnic table.

Paint Rock Springs Campground — St. Croix State Park

    No service

Felt nice to spend a weekend without cell service about an hour away from home. Forgot to take my usual photos and video of the site all set up but had a few random to share. Nice campground. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are flush toilets and showers and the office has a store for any last minute needs.

    Wild River State Park Campground

    Solid option with star gazing

This is a solid state park offering. The sites are decently spaced with good tree cover. Noise seemed to travel between sites, I had some loud neighbors during the day but they settled down before quiet hours. The grass was easy to get tent stakes into. Bathrooms were your basic state park situation. Clean with warm showers so no complaints from me. The star gazing area was great! Intermittently had 1-2 bars of T-Mobile with LTE Internet. Wi-Fi is available at the park entrance.

    North View Campground

    Serene Serenity

Pet friendly and the perfect get away. Relaxing, quiet and surrounded by nature. We’re lucky enough to plan ahead and book for the fall colors. Highly recommended for those who respect nature, it’s beauty and the silence they encompass.

Old Logging Trail — St. Croix State Park

    Lots of mosquitos

St. Croix SP: was quite buggy due to a lot of recent rain. Highly recommend fogging your site or having a bug enclosure to help ward of the mosquitos. Multiple restrooms and showers throughout the campgrounds. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table and wood can be purchased at the office. Cell service is fairly spotty here so come with podcasts or shows downloaded ahead of time!

    Roam Base Camp

Rustic camping in the middle of Seeley Pass

Rustic campsites with easy access to the Seeley Pass trail candy. Lots of mosquitoes- so many it was hard to be outside and enjoy a fire at all, but also an untypical rainy weekend. Very quiet area in the middle of the Northwoods. Small sites with long grass around all the sides, which makes for a fair amount of ticks. If trail access was all we wanted, I’d give it 5 stars. On a rainy weekend, it wasn’t ideal. Must pay for showers.

    Lake Chippewa Campground

    Still One of Our Favs

As we arrived on a Saturday around 1:45 PM, there was quite the line of RVs checking in as most people come in for a week on Saturdays. As we have been here multiple times, we knew not to line up down the narrow road shoot that’s adjacent to the lodge where you check in but stay on the main road. They had plenty of staff on duty, so check-in was fairly quick, and we headed to site 457, which was an easy back-in with FHUs. We were pleasantly surprised we didn’t get site 456 right on the road. When we make a reservation for this campground(CG), you can only pick an area, not a specific site, for most of the sites. This was the first time we’d stayed in this area of mixed short-term and seasonal sites. The FHU facilities were placed in the middle of the gravel-grass site with a picnic table and fire pit. We were able to put out our back patio and have plenty of space to park our F450. There are a lot of mature trees in this park, so satellite is going to be iffy depending on the site. We were able to get an okay shot to the north for Starlink but no chance for the southern sky. You can opt to pay for the park Wi-Fi. The water pressure is good, and we had two bars on Verizon. The staff at the lodge/office is top-notch. We found out that this year’s“watch out” was kids riding electric bikes full out versus underage golf cart drivers of last year, so“watch out” in either case. The CG has been trying to police the lack of parental oversight, but this first-rate CG attacks a lot of families. Though there’s no formal dog park, there are plenty of areas to walk your dog, including the trail up and around the newer primitive camping area. Lake Chip is one of our favs, and we will continue to return.

    Lake Chippewa Campground

    Lake Chip Continues to Please

Our RV GPS wanted to take us through Hayward city central to the campground (CG), which was fine. However, as this was our fourth time staying at Lake Chippewa Campground, we stayed on Hwy 77 past the Walmart to hook up on Hwy 63 at the casino to avoid traffic and stoplights in Hayward. We arrived with no issues and during check-in we were delighted to find out we had other site options than the pull throughs for our 12 night stay. We had changed our reservations to an earlier date, and the only open sites at the time were pull throughs, which are not bad. However, there are much better sites in this CG. We were provided a map of available sites and a golf cart to check out sites. As we know this CG well, it was a no brainer for us to chose back-in site 460 with FHUs. The regulars who normally stay in this site had gotten an opening in one of the CG's permanent site areas. We happily proceeded to our site and had no problems backing in. The hook ups are in the middle of this long pad. Water pressure was good at about 50 psi. We did not opt for their Wifi, which you have pay for and later found out it doesn't work in this area anyway. We got 1 bar on Verizon and the signal was basically useless. There are a lot of mature trees in this CG and in this site in particular. We put our Starlink on the roof and we were able to get a usable signal. We would rather have a nice site with privacy than wifi or a phone signal. This site sits well off the road and has a large back yard area. Lake Chip is a large private CG but has a state park feel. They have lots of amenities such site side trash pickup, laundry, boat/kayak rentals, golf cart rentals, propane, and the list goes on. Eat at Powell’s on Round Lake about 15 minutes away on Co Hwy C towards Hayward. Good food and service.

Guide to Haugen

Cabin accommodations near Haugen, Wisconsin range from waterfront to wooded settings within a 30-mile radius. The region experiences cold winters with temperatures averaging 5°F in January and mild summers around 80°F in July, making weather preparation essential for cabin stays. Most rental cabins require advance booking, especially for weekend stays during peak summer months when occupancy reaches 90%.

What to do

River tubing access: 2.5-mile routes: At O'Neil Creek Campground, the natural creek provides a popular lazy river experience. "The creek flowing through it to tube, swim and even kayak. Rentals available," notes one camper. Many visitors appreciate the shallow water which makes it safe for younger children.

Pontoon rental: full-day options: Lake Chippewa Campground offers boat rentals allowing exploration of the Chippewa flowage. "We rented a pontoon for the day and beached it on one of the many islands the lake has," reports a visitor. The lake's multiple islands create natural stopping points for swimming or picnics.

Hiking trail exploration: 15+ miles available: The state parks surrounding Haugen provide extensive trail networks ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. "The park is huge and beautiful. We snowshoed and skied. I really enjoyed the snowshoe hike along the St Croix River and watched the full moon rise," writes a winter visitor. Seasonal trail conditions are posted at ranger stations.

What campers like

Waterfront site options: premium locations: Campers consistently mention the appeal of shoreline cabin accommodations. "We stay at this group site for a week every summer with our extended family and look forward to returning as soon as we pull-out. The group sites with water access and full hook-ups can't be beat," describes a Lake Chippewa Campground regular.

Privacy between sites: woodland screening: Many cabin guests appreciate the natural separation between accommodations. At Wild River State Park Campground, "The campground was very nice. The sites are private, couldn't see any neighbors as there are a lot of trees. The park rangers were very helpful and informative."

Recreation facilities: family activities: Hayward KOA provides extensive amenities beyond basic cabin rentals. "Great place to let the kids go run off and play while the parents relax under the awning while grilling. Large 9ft heated pool, mini golf, large playground, horse shoes, volleyball, nice size water slide, covered stage for music, ice cream shop, huge jump pillow," details a family visitor.

What you should know

Reservation timing: high-demand periods: Lake Chippewa Campground experiences extremely high demand. "They start their booking for the year on January 1st. We called all day long (4500 times not kidding) and finally got a spot," reports one camper who secured a cabin. Most cabin rentals in the region open reservations 3-6 months in advance.

Internet connectivity: limited service: Cell service varies significantly across cabin locations near Haugen. "Cell service was incredibly spotty on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Depending on where you're at, you'll get a low signal, but often it was only enough for texting-- don't think about using the web or social media," notes a visitor to St. Croix State Park.

Seasonal considerations: insect activity: Summer visitors should prepare for mosquitos, especially near water. "It was very buggy, so be prepared for that," warns a St. Croix State Park visitor. Another camper suggests: "Highly recommend fogging your site or having a bug enclosure to help ward of the mosquitos."

Tips for camping with families

Water features: child safety: O'Neil Creek receives consistent praise for its family-friendly water access. "The natural creek that doubles as a lazy river is great," writes a reviewer. Another adds it's "Very shallow so even littles can do it too." Parents appreciate the gradual entry points.

Scheduled activities: weekend programming: Camp Namekagon and other area facilities offer organized events. "Campground and staff did a great job putting on Christmas in July. Very Kid friendly environment," mentions a seasonal visitor. Activity schedules are typically posted at campground offices.

Bathroom facilities: cleanliness factors: When selecting camping cabins near Haugen with children, bathroom proximity matters. "The restrooms were nice and we'll kept," notes a Wild River State Park visitor. Another camper at O'Neil Creek observed, "The restrooms were spotless," which is particularly important for families with young children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: size considerations: For those bringing trailers or RVs alongside cabin rentals, Hayward KOA provides important advice. "There are alot of trees that make it very challenging for larger rigs. There are a handful of sites that would be easy to access, I recommend calling first. We have a 43ft 5th wheel," advises a camper who navigated the tight spaces.

Cabin alternatives: RV rental options: Log Cabin Resort and Campground provides alternative accommodations for groups. "The people are very friendly. There is a nice inflatable park for the kids. They will bring you up the river to float down and land on their nice sand beach," mentions a visitor who enjoyed both the cabin and RV areas.
