"There are several hiking trails nearby (Piatt Park and Raven's Rock) which have incredible rock formations in the gorges," shares Darla. Unique themed accommodations: Bigfoot Ridge offers specialized accommodations with distinctive styling. "This yurt is 100% Bigfoot themed and has all the essentials including a shower house with laundry, a creek, and an amazing bed," shares Bethany R. Shower facility conditions vary widely: Forked Run State Park Campground maintains basic shower buildings. "The pit toilets were filthy- covered in flies, spiderwebs and dirt. They look like they have not been hosed out since the 70's. The showers and sinks are in an old, old building," explains Megan M. Seasonal closures affect amenities: Pools and recreational facilities typically close before cabins do each fall. "The pool is seasonal and with college age lifeguards that exit for school early, it was closed mid-August," notes one reviewer. Cabin rental seasons typically extend 2-3 weeks beyond swimming pool operations.
Sunday/Monday grocery options: Smaller cabin properties don't maintain on-site stores, requiring planning for provisions. "Review from the perspective of a motorcycle traveler tent camping... Had a $6 bundle of firewood delivered to my campsite," explains one visitor at River Run. Most cabin areas deliver firewood directly to sites when purchased through the main office.
Tips for camping with families
Child-friendly activities: Stonewall Resort State Park Campground offers numerous recreation options beyond hiking. "North Bend State Park would be good for kids because they have playgrounds, mini-golf and an outdoor swimming pool," notes Jennifer B. The property maintains designated family activity areas separate from cabin zones.
Bathhouse proximity matters: When booking cabin locations with children, proximity to bathhouses becomes crucial. "We were at site 13, right on the water. Check-in was easy and the staff was very friendly! Plenty of ice and firewood at the store and a cute little gift shop. The site was mostly flat where we parked the camper and very close to the bathhouse," explains Julie C. Site maps typically mark bathhouse locations.
Check tent site conditions: Tent sites often occupy less desirable terrain than cabin areas. "Tent sites are situated between the roadway and the river on the left...then additional tent sites are around a small half acre pond on the right. Most the roadside tent sites are level, but sit at a lower level, so when it rains (and it does in WV)...it gets soggy," explains Dave V. Cabin locations typically occupy higher ground.

Gate access systems: Grand Vue Park utilizes secure entry systems for cabin and RV areas. "Everyone was so friendly and the gate just uses a code! so not fiddling around with a Fob or keycard! We were the only ones at the campground when we stayed there the park shuttle bus would come around the park and was offering to take you to any where in or outside of the park!" notes Owen I. Most electronic gates close after certain evening hours.
Power quality concerns: Electrical systems at some properties experience voltage fluctuations. "My surgeguard shut off the power in the evening due to high voltage. It was showing 137 volts at one time," reports one camper at Stonewall Resort. RV power protection systems may trigger at certain properties, particularly during peak usage periods.
WiFi limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between properties. "Wifi is non existent! Tried connecting TV to it and connected with no internet. So, hotspotted my cell phone and showed a internet connection, but very slow," notes Snooz H. at Flatwoods KOA.
