Lake front camping

This is one of my favorite areas to backpack in, the Alpine Lake Wilderness. My preferred camp site is right on Surprise Lake, though there are more if you continue on to Glacier Lake. I’ve camped here twice, one in the winter and another time last summer, both were very pleasant, but you should be warned that there aren’t any amenities, and you definitely need to bring a water filter. Also it can easily be much colder at the lake than Skykomish.

No promises, but I haven’t found it to be overly crowded, seems like more people do it as a day hike (only 11 miles round trip, but you could connect up with the PCT to increase milage). I’ll let the pictures do the real selling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access Surprise Lake in Washington?

Surprise Lake is located within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area in Washington. To access the lake, you'll need to hike in via backcountry trails. The trailhead is accessible by forest service roads, though specific directions should be verified with the U.S. Forest Service before your trip. Pack appropriate gear for a backcountry hike, as this is not a drive-up destination.

What activities can I do at Surprise Lake, Washington?

Surprise Lake offers excellent opportunities for backpacking, hiking, fishing, swimming, and nature photography. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness area provides stunning mountain views and alpine scenery. Wildlife viewing is also popular, with various species inhabiting the area. If you continue hiking beyond Surprise Lake, you can reach Glacier Lake for additional exploration and scenic vistas.

When is the best time to camp at Surprise Lake, Washington?

Summer is the prime season for camping at Surprise Lake when trails are clear and temperatures are comfortable for backpacking and swimming. Late spring through early fall generally offers the most accessible conditions. Winter camping is possible for experienced backcountry campers with proper cold-weather gear, though snow significantly increases the challenge and requires winter navigation skills. Always check trail conditions and weather forecasts before your trip, regardless of season.

Are there camping facilities at Surprise Lake, Washington?

Surprise Lake offers primitive backcountry campsites right along the lakeshore, with additional sites available if you continue to Glacier Lake. These are undeveloped wilderness sites without amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, or restrooms. As part of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles, properly store food to prevent wildlife encounters, and be prepared for self-sufficient camping. No reservations are needed, but wilderness permits may be required depending on the season.
