We preferred Lower Oak Bay

We checked out this campground but decided to stay at the Lower Bay campground. This campground (upper) is just more traditional, with separate sites and loops and a host. Some of the sites have a nice water view. We liked the Lower Bay because it was more peaceful and calm, right on the water, (cheaper). I have to say if there were other campers at Lower Bay we may have preferred the Upper Bay, just because there's more privacy from your neighbor.

OK camp spot. No showers. Lagoon that fronts the park smells at low tides.

Upper Oak Bay CG: A nice day use play park for kids. I vault toilet. No showers. One potable water spigot. Rest are for washing.

There is NO path down to the lagoon other than a precipitous dirt chute requiring a rope to climb back up.

Nice view from a few frontal sites.

Lower Oak Bay CG is wide open, so better for RVs and Vans. Easy shoreline access for small boats.

Campsites with view

Pro: My little one loves the playground and a green field. Beautiful view of the bay. Reasonable price. Con: No shower place. Hard to fill the fresh water tank.

Nice spot for a couple of nights

The upper campground is nicer than the lower (basically a gravel lot for $20). The upper has a lot of trees to divide the non-electric sites nicely. Sites feel far apart but since it’s not super green, you can hear neighbors. There’s a vault toilet, trash and water spigot on-site. There’s a nice playground for the kids. It’s $20 for the non electric. Electric/water sites are available and are full sun along the water. Really nice area to walk the dog and very quiet at night.

Crowded and close together

Campsites are super close together, not much privacy. We easily overheard our neighbors conversations and cars were driving by campsite frequently in the evening. Also, the water is pretty much blocked by the RV sites. The ground was mostly rock so getting tent pegs in the ground was difficult.

Better of Oak Bay Campgrounds - Gorgeous view!

I think this is the better of the two Oak Bay campgrounds (upper and lower). It has some nice sites in the woods with privacy. There are a couple of sites with good views, but they are very close to each other.

I would recommend camping in one of the wooded sites, and then walking/driving to the Lower Campground for the day. That's a much more beautiful spot, but there are no trees and the sites are right next to each other with no privacy.

You're also very close to Marrowstone Island, which is one of the best kept secrets of the Olympic Peninsula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Oak Bay Campground located in Jefferson County?

Upper Oak Bay Park is located in Jefferson County with scenic views overlooking the bay. The campground sits above a lagoon, though access to the water is limited with no developed path down to the shore. The park's position provides beautiful vistas from select campsites, particularly those at the front of the campground.

What amenities are available at Oak Bay Campground?

Upper Oak Bay Park offers basic amenities including vault toilets, trash receptacles, and potable water spigots (though some are designated for washing only). The campground features a playground and green field that's popular with families. There are both wooded sites and some with water views. What's the difference between Upper and Lower Oak Bay Campground?

Upper Oak Bay has a traditional campground layout with separate sites, defined loops, and a host on-site. It features wooded sites offering more privacy and a few spots with water views. Lower Oak Bay is essentially a gravel lot for $20 per night, situated directly on the water with less separation between sites. What do visitor reviews say about Oak Bay Campground?

Upper Oak Bay Park generally receives positive feedback for its wooded sites that provide some privacy, playground facilities, and reasonable pricing. Visitors appreciate the beautiful bay views from select sites and family-friendly atmosphere. However, common criticisms include the close proximity of some sites (particularly those with water views), limited privacy in certain areas, challenging ground conditions for tent stakes, and lack of shower facilities. Some visitors note that despite trees dividing non-electric sites, noise carries between campsites. The campground is considered preferable to the Lower Oak Bay area for those seeking a more traditional camping experience.
