Silver Lake Backcountry

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing, paddleboarding, and ATV riding draw campers to Silver Lake Backcountry in Alta, Utah, where the main recreation involves the lake and the surrounding high country terrain. The campground sits within Uinta National Forest and is free to use, though reaching it requires more effort than most established sites. As of early July, the road is gated, making a hike-in mandatory. Come prepared to carry gear.

Access is the defining factor here. Reaching camp requires crossing a creek with 12 to 18 inches of water, sometimes up to four crossings depending on where you set up. The dirt and gravel road leading to Silver Lake Reservoir runs roughly 10 miles from Tibble Fork Reservoir. Sites are wide and spacious, with established fire pits at most. Shade is limited, so sun protection matters. Campers consistently mention open sightlines toward the back of Mount Timpanogos, with Box Elder Peak visible to the west and the Alpine Ridge to the north.

The half-mile camping buffer from the lake is a firm rule. Reviewers have noted people camping along the lake shore, which is not permitted. Brick-enclosed vault toilets are available at the trailhead. Fishing and light watercraft are allowed on Silver Lake Reservoir. Kimball Campground and Red Pine Lake are nearby alternatives for those exploring places to camp near Uinta National Forest. Michelle B. describes the sites as "wide spacious camp sites," a detail that holds up across multiple reviews. This campground works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with creek crossings and variable road conditions.

Great Views- Have to hike in!

You can’t drive to the coordinates, you have to park at the uppermost parking lot for Silver Flat and hike up to a camping spot. Camping anywhere along that road will give you gorgeous views, though! Saw lots of people camping super close to the lake and even along the shores, which is not allowed. You need to stay at least 1/2 mile away from the lake to camp. Maybe they open the road up at some point during the year, but as of July 2nd, it was gated off, so come prepared to backpack up to a spot

Awesome place close to town

Only 40-50 minutes away from Provo, UT area so easy to get away for a quick day or two of camping. Lots of hikes to do nearby, beautiful views, and place to paddle board, kayak, etc.

Busy but beautiful!

There were a lot of off road vehicles and people fishing. More crowded then we were expecting, but the views were amazing! Not a lot of shade, as in bring your own. Perfect place for dogs to play!

Silver Lake

you’re definitely going to need 4WD and high clearance because the roads leading up to the campsite are filled with ruts and holes. the views make the drive there worth it, though. the fall colors during the day and the stars during the night were spectacular!

4 wheel drive accessible Free

Wide spacious camp sites. ATV paradise, fire pits established in most camp sites, only accessible by 4 wheel drive. Must cross a creek with 12"-18" of water at least once and up to 4 times depending on which camp site you choose. Brick enclosed outhouse style toilets available at trailhead about 1/2 mike from camp site. Beautiful back country, great views of the back of  Mt. Timpanogos. Fishing, and light watercraft permissible in Silver Lake Resevoir. Not crowded at all. Dirt/gravel road for about 10 miles to get to Silver Lake Reservoir from Tible Fork Reservoir. Then only dirt roads beyond the creek. We hiked 1,000 vertical feet to Silver Lake. It was so beautiful. We spent our afternoons paddleboarding on Silver Lake Reservoir.

Gorgeous Alpine Views all Around

An amazing spot to drive to and spend the day or backpack in and spend a night or two.  Be warned you will need a 4wd vehicle if trying to go up the road after a rain storm.  At the trailhead you have great acces to the lake and fishing.  There is also a large bathroom.  Some days the parking lot can fill and you'll have to park on the road or a pullout.  To the south you have a fantastic view of the Timpanogos Massif looming over the lake.  To the west you'll see Box Elder Peak and to the north is Dry Canyon and the Alpine Ridge.  Remember that you do have to hike in at least a 0.5 mile from the trailhead

Wonderful Spot!

This area is easy to drive to. You do have to drive through a small river and must camp half a mile from the lake. The scenery is beautiful and we even saw a herd of deer run by our camp. Fishing is right up the road too.
