Off road adventure

Lake is stunning with camping sites all the way around the lake & most are right on the water. 4x4 & high clearance is a must to access this area. Gets crowded on the weekends but I’ve never seen more than 2 spots taken on the week days.

Gorgeous spot, crowded on the weekend

You must have high-clearance 4WD to get to these sites. Also like one of the other reviewers states, this does not mean that you’ll be one of few campers at the lake. We found a beautiful campsite that was secluded and settled in. Then we learned that a trail encircles the lake and goes through all of the campsites. Lots of folks walking on the trail (and thus through our “secluded” site) including with off leash dogs. We also had someone come camp right on top of us, even though we could see open spots across the lake. We could hear partiers across the lake but they were far away and they settled down after it got dark. Everyone cleared out after Sunday and we had the lake practically to ourselves. The lake was beautiful and if you’re going for the views and don’t mind other people around, you won’t be disappointed. Or maybe just go during the week when few people are present. The poor air quality in the valley from the Oregon wild fires probably also made this spot more popular. Everyone we talked to came in from Salt Lake City for the weekend.

Perfect spot to camp!

We did not have four wheel drive so we did not drive all the way to the lake. Found some great camping spots off the road about a half mile before the turnoff to the lake. We were able to walk to the lake to check out the views. Could hear some people in the distance, but they were not bothersome and it seemed pretty secluded otherwise!

Great site, poor experience with people

There are numerous campsites spread around the lake and many are right on the water which is awesome. From the reviews here and a few other sites I expected this area to be much less crowded due to the tough access road to get to the lake. Luckily, the sites are decently spread out so it is somewhat secluded.

However, we had a group camp right on top of us at 2:30AM. They parked and setup a tents 20 feet away from out firepit. They had no intentions of leaving and were quite rude. Dog was off leash when we woke up and was barking at us while they did nothing about it and continued to sleep. Swearing at their children and disrespecting the land. Luckily another site opened up later in the morning so we packed up and moved.

Again, this area is beautiful with nice campsites, just don't expect it to be as secluded as the other reviews state.

Perfect Outdoor Retreat

Campsites are very secluded. We were able to camp right by the lake so we could fish. It is pretty rocky and some areas are a little narrow with the trees so bring something lifted if you plan on camping near the lake.

Real backcountry camping

My family camps at Alexander Lake almost every year. We love it here! You can camp right on the lake with hardly anyone around you. You have to four-wheel in to get there--low clearance cars won't make it. Take a raft or canoe out on the lake and go fishing! Beautiful around there! Elevation is high so you may get summer thunderstorms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What outdoor activities can visitors enjoy at Alexander Lake?

Alexander Lake offers excellent fishing opportunities with the chance to catch various fish species directly from the shoreline or by boat. Visitors can bring rafts, canoes, or other small watercraft to explore the lake. Hiking is popular on trails that encircle the lake, providing scenic views and access to more secluded areas. Wildlife viewing, photography, and stargazing are rewarding due to the remote setting. The pristine mountain environment also makes it perfect for nature appreciation and relaxation in a tranquil setting with minimal crowds, especially on weekdays.

When is the best season to camp at Alexander Lake in the Uintas?

Summer and early fall are ideal for camping at Alexander Lake. The high elevation means the area is typically accessible from late June through September, with July and August offering the most reliable weather conditions. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends, so plan accordingly if you prefer solitude. Early fall can provide beautiful scenery with fewer visitors, but be prepared for cooler temperatures. Always check current conditions before heading out, as mountain weather can change rapidly.

What camping facilities are available at Alexander Lake, Utah?

Alexander Lake is a primitive backcountry camping destination with no developed facilities. There are numerous natural campsites scattered around the lake, many situated right at the water's edge offering stunning views. Sites are relatively secluded and spaced apart, providing decent privacy despite the area's popularity. There are no amenities such as toilets, potable water, or trash service, so visitors must be prepared to pack in all supplies and pack out all waste. Bring everything you need for self-sufficient camping, including water filtration systems.

How do I get to Alexander Lake in the Uinta Mountains of Utah?

Reaching Alexander Lake requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle as the access road is rough and challenging. Standard passenger cars and low-clearance vehicles won't make it all the way to the lake. The route involves navigating narrow passages between trees and rocky terrain. If you don't have appropriate transportation, you can park about half a mile before the lake turnoff and hike in the remaining distance. The difficulty of access helps maintain the lake's remote character despite its popularity.
