Highway traffic hums through this 31-site state park campground along the John Day River, where paved sites accommodate RVs up to 84 feet long. Sites closer to the water offer more separation from road noise, while those backing up to Highway 26 experience regular vehicle sounds throughout the day.
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis from March through November, with camp hosts maintaining green, irrigated sites through regular watering. Lee D. notes that each site includes "a large picnic table, fire ring, electric hookup, and wastewater drain." Two teepees sit closer to the river but farther from the main restroom facilities. Full hookups, hot showers, and a dump station serve RV campers, while tent campers can access the same amenities.
A half-mile nature trail follows the John Day River, where children catch crayfish and adults fish in nearby ponds. The trail forks several times, with left turns leading to private property boundaries before looping back toward camp. Sprinklers run continuously to maintain the grass, creating lush conditions but generating constant water sounds. Day-use areas provide additional space for activities beyond individual sites.
Campers typically find availability even on busy weekends, though summer fills earlier than shoulder seasons. The closest supplies are 8-10 miles away in John Day, with limited selection and higher prices. Sites range from 37 to 84 feet in length, all level with paved pads. Electric, water, and sewer connections accommodate most RV configurations.
Plan to bring mosquito repellent for river proximity and consider earplugs if sensitive to road noise from nearby sites.
