Little Bear Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Grand Mesa National Forest is home to Little Bear Campground, a first-come, first-served site near Cedaredge, Colorado, with around 34 sites spread across forested terrain managed by the US Forest Service. The campground sits close enough to Island Lake that some sites have direct foot-path access to the water, making it a practical base for anglers and paddlers who want proximity without a long walk. Sites are spaced out reasonably well, though reviewers note privacy is limited. Cell signal is unreliable to nonexistent here, so plan accordingly.

The lake access is the campground's most consistently noted feature. Fishing draws repeat visitors, and the Island Lake Trail runs along the east side of the lake from the campground. Island Lake Campground is nearby for comparison, though reviewers suggest Little Bear handles larger rigs less comfortably than its neighbor. Bugs are a real factor during warmer months, particularly July and August, so bring appropriate gear. Weekends fill up; arriving on a Sunday, campers often find weekend traffic clearing out, and a midweek stay gives better odds of finding a quieter spot.

Amenities include vault toilets, water spigots, and trash service. A camp host is typically onsite and has been described as helpful by multiple visitors. Heather M. notes the sites were "clean, maintained, and the camp hosts were very friendly." Firewood is available for purchase at around $10 per bundle. Note that pets are not permitted. The current nightly rate has been reported at $20, with a senior discount available. Campers who want a straightforward forest camp with direct lake access and reliable amenities will find Little Bear worth a look.

Great getaway

Pulled in on a Sunday and noticed a lot of weekend traffic pulling out. Recommend going during the week if you are looking for privacy. Great spots to dry camp. Close to plenty of fishing and hiking. The bugs are intense during the warmer months

Nice FF alternative to Island Lake CG

This CG is a much tighter site campground (no big RVs or 5th wheels IMO) than Island Lake CG nearby. Little Bear CG is all FF, and has about 34 sites. Vault toilets, water spigots, and dumpsters. $20/$10 senior. CG Host onsite, firewood for sale $10. Cell signal limited to none. I use Starlink-RV.

Access to Island Lake by foot paths from some sites and the very nice Island Lake Trail that hugs the entire east side of the lake.

Good, relaxing vaca

Great place to go. Always enjoy camping in Grand Mesa. It’s not as busy as the Front Range and most spots are easy to get to

Wonderful spot

I pulled up early on a Friday morning and managed to snag a spot pretty close to the lake. Fantastic view and right next to the walking trails. The camp sights are spaced out enough but there isn't a much for privacy. The scenery makes it all worth it though. Unfortunately the spot I was in, was close to the restrooms. While convenient, I could also catch whiffs of the bathroom. No fun. Overall the sites were clean, maintained, and the camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely get back here!

Little Bear Campground

Great campground! Super close to the lake. The camp hosts were so nice. When we went it was $20 per night, which is different from what I found online.

We left hell and found heaven

We went searching for a free camping spot near Gunnison and got horribly stuck in mud on roads that were too awful for our car, even with 4wheel drive. So after a stressful day, we finally came to this campground and found paradise. On the 4th of July, there were spots available. The host was very nice. Plenty of shade and trees, and it is 30 steps away from a gorgeous lake. Good fishing. Easy paddle boarding. Lots of bugs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need reservations for Little Bear Campground on Grand Mesa?

Reservations are not explicitly required for Little Bear Campground, but they are highly recommended, especially during holidays and weekends. The campground has about 34 sites that can fill up quickly during peak season. Some campers have reported finding available spots even on holiday weekends, but weekday arrivals typically offer better chances for securing a site. Early morning arrivals also improve your odds of finding an open spot.

What do Little Bear Campground sites look like?

Little Bear Campground features sites that are relatively close together with limited privacy between them. The campground is better suited for smaller camping setups rather than large RVs or fifth wheels. Sites are first-come, first-served and some offer beautiful views of the lake. The campground includes vault toilets, water spigots, and dumpsters. While the sites may not offer much seclusion, the spectacular mountain and lake scenery more than compensates for the proximity to neighboring campers.

Where is Little Bear Campground located on Grand Mesa?

Little Bear Campground is located on the Grand Mesa in Colorado, situated very close to a lake with walking trails nearby. This beautiful campground is positioned in a more remote area of Grand Mesa, making it less crowded than Front Range camping areas. The campground offers excellent access to fishing spots and hiking trails, with the lakeside location providing scenic views and recreational opportunities.

How does Little Bear Campground compare to other Grand Mesa campgrounds?

Little Bear Campground is notably tighter and more compact than nearby Island Lake Campground, making it better suited for smaller camping setups rather than large RVs. At $20 per night ($10 for seniors), it offers a more intimate camping experience with approximately 34 first-come, first-served sites. Unlike some busier Grand Mesa options, Little Bear tends to be less crowded, especially on weekdays. The campground's proximity to the lake and easy access to fishing and hiking trails makes it particularly appealing for outdoor enthusiasts, though campers should be prepared for intense bugs during warmer months.
