I stayed for days. Really liked the location.

There are more than one listing for places to camp along FS 949. I stayed on a pad that was build along with the road. Loved the views, The area is very interesting. Crestone is a tiny town with just about anything you might want within a walk from where I parked. Plenty of camping spots all the way up to the end of the road where there is a fairly busy trailhead.

Rough

I pull a small trailer and the road in was rough. I was concerned about being able to turn around. When I got to the spot where there are six or eight camping spots, finding one suitable for a trailer was difficult, but I did it. This is more suitable to car camping.

There is an open area that would be good for group camping. There are three or more RVs that appear to be permanent  features. That was strange. Looked like fishing camps. I didn't want to drive the steep road down to this area.

Personally, I wish I had stopped a the forest service campsites up hill from this location, but if you are in a car and want to tent camp here, I don't see a problem,

Community park well off the highway.

I planned out a stop here on a long western tour. I planned to stop for the night. When I arrived, the park was flooded. The area that ran along the lake was not flooded was OK, but it was a road with picknick shelters, much less suitable for camping than the flooded areas would have been. I felt exposed and in-the-way, so I moved on to the next stop. Assuming it dries out, there should always be a place to stop.

A place to lay over.

I may have just used that title, but I liked the spot. I stayed there two nights. The parking lot has sites with individual, free water, electricity, and sewer. The town is odd based on my experience. It is small and getting smaller and there is almost no morning activity. But it is interesting. Clearly agriculture and wind energy dominate the economy. I guess everyone is out in the field during the day. There is a hamburger stand in town, which is unremarkable, but not disappointing.

I enjoyed photographing the town with it's midwestern farm town look and century old buildings.

Absolut no problems with the site or the town. I enjoyed driving around the surrounding landscape for a couple of days.

Good for a layover

There are a limited number of sites, about three. When I arrived, there were none available, but someone cruised through and wanted to chat with me, by the time he finished a site opened up. This was actually my first municipal park stay, so I was a  bit nervous and eventually decided to move on. But the park is as described and it is on an attractive lake. In the end, it's just a place to park for a night unless your have something to do. Main downside is that you may or may not get a place to park.
