Lake Somerville State Park Nails Creek Unit Campground

    Great Fall Camping, Equestrian Area

A nice, quiet fall camping weekend on Lake Somerville. It was a solo trip and since the weather was warm, I brought my kayak on this trip.

Check In: 2p Check Out: 12p

    ⛺ Site#26- Back-In

    💲20 per night+$4/person/day Parks Pass Discount saved$18.00

    • Water
    • 20/30 amp
    • Fire Ring with grate
    • Picnic Table: wood with metal legs, concrete base
    • Site Pad: Asphalt, level, long enough for my camper and truck with room to spare
    • Corrals for horses

    👍🏻 Pros:

    • Extra parking places across the street
    • Can see the lake from this spot

    👎🏻 Cons:

    • There's not a direct trail to the lake shore other than animal trails through some of the tall grass
    • The table and fire ring are on the non-camping side so it was a little strange. Very dark at night on that side.

    📝 Park Notes:

    • Dump Station
    • Restrooms/ Showers- clean. The Bent Tree area has a portable trailer for the restrooms and showers. The main building is closed.
    • There are Munzees and Geocaches here
    • Lots of trails in the park and between this and the Birch Creek Unit
    • Great trails for equestrians
    • Enclosed Group shelter for events (no kitchen)
    • Family Fishing Pond (small)
    • The open style pavilion doesn't appear to be open. Looks like it's is structurally unsound

    🐦 Wildlife:

    • Birds: Great Blue Heron, Cardinals, Chickadees
    • Deer
    • Squirrels

    💜 Highlights of this trip:

•🔥 Campfires and breakfast over the fire

•🐕 My brother came for a short visit to walk the dog

•🛶 Kayaking and there was only ONE other boat on the lake

    •🍂 Nice fall colors

•🚫 Some of the trails and areas of the park were closed this weekend due to public hunts

•🌟 Warm temperatures and clear nights. Lots of stars.

•💚 Found a couple geocaches and put out a few Munzees

    Fort Boggy State Park Campground

    Hidden gem

Beautiful small state park. We usually tent camp but this time we decided staying at a cabin. Nice, beautiful and modern cabins. Love the enclosed porch and open porch as well. The cabin was spacious enough for our family of 6. The new family restroom close to the cabins was great, nice and clean. I will be back.

    Park On The Lake

    VERY close together/owner is awesome

We stayed here on Labor Day weekend. It was very packed. However at this location everyone sits right on top of one another. There wasn’t even enough room to sit outside and enjoy it. I will have to say the owner is VERY helpful and nice. We pull a 35 foot 5th wheel and he originally had us in a spot where our rig would not fit. He was so kind enough on a busy weekend to swap us to a different spot at the very last minute. We were right on the water and we got to fish. If I had to rate this spot I would give it a solid 7 out of 10 just based on the fact that we were so close to one another. No fire ring or picnic table. Bathrooms were clean and facility in general there was pleasant.

    Thousand Trails Lake Conroe

    Very well kept TT campground

The campground is well laid out. Easy access to sites, amenities and the Lake. Although its a small portion of the lake on the campgrounds side, you do have access to boat rentals,  a boat launch and plenty of parking. So if you have a boat, it will be a wonderful experience. Plus there is a beach area for families to enjoy.

The cottages look almost brand new. The campground even has a location to wash your RV or vehicle.

    Thousand Trails Lake Conroe

Great location with access to Lake Conroe, Nice Sites, we had a great time!

We went to watch the Eclipse in October, it was great weather, no clouds.  We had a great time.  Our RV site was roomy and there were a few sites surrounding us that were not occupied, which allowed us to spread out, kicking soccer balls and throwing footballs.  The kids loved it.  The boat launch is nice, we didn't have any watercrafts but will maybe try to bring a kayak or canoe next time we visit.

The location is not far from The Woodlands and Houston, and other attractions.  But still in a quiet area.

    Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort Waller

Our family had such an amazing time at Jellystone Park Waller!

The kids absolutely loved the water zone and lazy river—we literally couldn’t get them to leave. The staff was super friendly, and everything felt clean and well-maintained. We stayed in one of the cabins and it was super cozy and convenient. The themed activities and crafts were a huge hit, especially the Halloween fun! We’re already planning our next visit. Highly recommend for families looking for a fun and relaxing getaway close to Houston!

Guide to Wellborn

Cabin camping near Wellborn, Texas provides access to Lake Somerville, a 11,630-acre reservoir located about 20 miles southeast. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F from June through August, while winter nights can dip below 40°F. Campgrounds throughout the region offer varied cabin options ranging from basic structures to fully-equipped cottages, with several properties implementing enhanced reservation systems for football weekends.

What to do

Water activities: Lake Bryan Campground offers direct lake access for swimming, boating and fishing. "One of those, you get what you pay for kind of places. The facilities are there. They aren't great, but at least they are permanent. The lake is there, it's not super pretty but it's also closer to College Station and Bryan than anywhere else," notes a camper.

Hiking trails: Lake Somerville State Park Nails Creek Unit Campground provides extensive trail systems connecting multiple park units. A visitor reports, "There are trails you can access in the park, with many more miles a short drive away. Two bridges are out on the Trailway which limits options a bit. The hiking and biking is all well defined double track with little elevation change."

Outdoor games: Hardy's Resort RV Park includes recreational amenities beyond traditional camping. A reviewer mentioned, "Beautiful park, it had 2 ponds and a large grassy area with a gazebo for hanging out, and the cutest miniature life size chess set, yes we played and of course, I won."

What campers like

Quiet settings: Lake Bryan Campground offers more secluded cabin options for those seeking tranquility. "We stayed in a wooded area that provided natural fencing between us and other campers. It was nice to have the access to water, and bathrooms were clean," notes one reviewer.

Spacious sites: Overlook provides comfortable cabin spacing. "We camped at spot 1, right up from the lake. Very spacious spot to fit three tents. Dog friendly. Very quiet, everyone courteous. Two great fishing spots: down on the lake by the campsite and by the marina (both super close to the campsite)," reports a visitor.

Wildlife viewing: Karstens RV Resort cabins allow guests to experience local nature. As one camper mentioned, Lake Somerville State Park nearby features "Great wildlife on the trails with lots of educational displays and programs. Famous for birding. If you have a horse, bring it!"

What you should know

Reservation systems: Hidden Creek RV Resort maintains an efficient booking process even during busy periods. "We have stayed here several times as we have a son and daughter attending A&M. This park is immaculate and check in is always painless. The staff is very friendly and appreciative. We have never had a problem at Hidden Creek."

Weather considerations: Holiday RV Park cabins provide shelter from typical Texas weather patterns. A camper noted, "I don't suppose I can blame Benbrook for hot weather in August. Pretty campground. Saw deer."

Site selection: Lake Somerville Marina and Campground offers varied cabin locations. A visitor advises, "We stayed in a wooded area that provided natural fencing between us and other campers. It was nice to have the access to water, and bathrooms were clean."

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Thousand Trails Lake Conroe offers extensive family programming. "Gorgeous campground with a large lake and two ponds, a pool, putt putt, & tons of activities for kids! Retail cost is $60/night and totally worth it if you don't have a membership!"

Swimming options: Hardy's Resort RV Park has dedicated water recreation areas. "There is a really nice size pool with a covered porch area for sitting and a sun/TV room on the other side of the pool area, for lounging; hubby spent time in there watching sports while the kids played in the pool."

Educational opportunities: Lake Somerville State Park Nails Creek Unit includes nature programming. "Great wildlife on the trails with lots of educational displays and programs. Famous for birding."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Holiday RV Park cabins vary in location and amenities. "Great location to stay while paying my daughter a visit while at school. Not easy to get around from there based on the construction and how the roads work. The site is clean and orderly. Very simple place."

Connection access: Karstens RV Resort cabin accommodations include connectivity options. A visitor noted, "What a great RV Park. Clean, great rates. Very good wifi included."

Bathroom facilities: Lake Bryan Campground cabin visitors should check shower facilities. One camper reported, "Site #9 was extremely unlevel, narrow, and not for big rigs. Only 30 amp service and the 110 did not work. The campsite host (?) said to load up and move to another site. He was very unfriendly, sarcastic, and just plain sad."
