    Rocky Point(wright Patman Dam)

    Beautiful, spacious and quiet!

We were in site B5 (one of 15 sites out of 124 that have FHU), for 12 days in September and October 2020. This site was not very level but we had great views of the lake out the front and side of our MH. It had a grill with table, picnic table and a fire ring. The sites are nicely sized, well-spaced apart and angled, providing nice privacy. This is our second time visiting this CG because we enjoyed it last year. It’s a fairly quiet campground– even the weekend partiers quieted down around 10ish. There is no WiFi or cable, Verizon 4G was 3-4 bars, 8 OTA channels. We did not use the bathrooms. The Park Hosts that arrived in October were very friendly. Beautiful sunsets on site B5!

    Clear Spring

    Excellent Corps of Engineers campground

This campground is exceptionally well managed. The facilities are basic, with bathhouses throughout, centrally located dumpsters, walking trails, and grounds workers constantly working.

The location on Wright Patman lake is awesome. Many of the sites are lakefront, others are in shaded loops within a 2 min walk of the lake shore.

The campground is an easy 15-20 minute drive from Texarkana and there are stores and restaurants closer than that.

    Beavers Bend State Park Campground

    Beavers Bend

This campground is nothing spectacular but I love it anyway; I just have really great memories being here. The campgrounds are pretty primitive, you have a fire ring and picnic table, vault toilets where we stayed. We had close access to the river from the campground, hence the photos. We got poured on here, to the point that we had to dig out a moat so that water would not flood the tent; it was a blast. The next day we went canoeing down the slow moving river which was also great. I like this campground and hope to return soon.

Guide to Texarkana

Tent campsites near Texarkana, Texas span across the Piney Woods ecoregion where the Arkansas Timberlands meet East Texas forests. The region features relatively flat terrain with elevations averaging 300-400 feet above sea level. Summer camping conditions typically include high humidity with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F between June and September, while winter nights frequently drop below freezing.

What to do

Boat fishing access: Thomas Lake Park provides direct water access via a boat ramp that serves a sizeable lake suitable for fishing. According to camper Wyatt, "There's about a mile long dirt road to get to the campground... Campground overlooks a good sized lake, as well as has a boat ramp."

Bank fishing opportunities: River Run West at Millwood Lake offers designated bank fishing areas within walking distance of camping sites. A visitor noted, "This is a very small campground with just 4 tent sites but is a beautiful space... bank fishing, boat ramp, trash, lantern poles, picnic table."

Wildlife observation: The camping areas around Texarkana contain diverse wildlife habitats. At River Run West, campers should "Beware of alligator" according to reviewer N.I., making it important to maintain awareness while exploring shorelines.

What campers like

Comfortable sleep surfaces: The natural terrain at some sites creates ideal sleeping conditions. Emma H. at Thomas Lake Park reported, "We got the best sleep we've ever had camping with the soft grass and our sleeping pad. Watch out for mud spots in the grass."

Peaceful camping experience: Many tent sites near Texarkana offer quiet surroundings away from urban noise. At River Run East, one camper observed it was "Very quiet except for some timber trucks (they sound like a helicopter flying overhead) driving across the dam."

Freshly maintained grounds: Regular groundskeeping enhances the camping experience at several locations. A visitor to Thomas Lake Park mentioned, "Grass was freshly mowed when I showed up," indicating active maintenance of the camping areas.

What you should know

Day use and camping fees: Most campsites in the Texarkana area charge modest fees. River Run West requires "$5.00 for day use" and "$8.00 per night" according to a reviewer, while similar fee structures exist at other locations.

Limited facilities: Many tent camping areas offer minimal amenities. River Run East has "6 sites with sheltered picnic table, fire ring, fish cleaning station, trash, NO WATER," according to N.I., making advance preparation essential.

Signage confusion: Always verify camping regulations before setting up. At Allens Ferry at Little River, a camper discovered after setting up that camping was prohibited: "when I arrived and constructed camp went for a quick jog and noticed at the bottom of sign says no camping."

Tips for camping with families

Site selection considerations: Look for level, grassy areas when camping with children. Emma H. recommends Thomas Lake Park but warns to "Watch out for mud spots in the grass," which can be problematic for family tents and gear.

Check fire restrictions: Fire regulations vary significantly between camping areas. While River Run East provides fire rings, other locations strictly prohibit fires, requiring alternative cooking arrangements for family meals.

Boating activities: Herron Creek offers both boat-in and drive-in camping access with 20 designated sites, providing families opportunities for water recreation with convenient camping proximity.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup availability: Most tent sites near Texarkana offer few amenities for RVs. River Run East has "8 gravel, no hook up" sites according to N.I., making it suitable only for smaller, self-contained RVs or vans.

Access road considerations: Approach roads can present challenges for larger vehicles. The "mile long dirt road" leading to Thomas Lake Park may become difficult to navigate after rain, particularly for RVs without four-wheel drive capability.
