    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Hidden gem in west Texas

In the middle of the oil fields is Willow Draw Campground in Monahan Sandhills State Park. The campground is a beautiful drive through the winding sandy hills. They have a good amount of RV spots, with 50 amp, water, and a dump station on the way out. Limited pull through sites that seem to book quickly, but plenty of open back in sites that are nicely spaced. We booked site 22, a back in site up against a large dune hill. It was not easy to back a 55ft long rig into, probably one of the worst sites for a big rig, but we still managed. We just had to park our tow vehicle weird.

The dunes are awesome and beautiful. The park is incredibly clean and the rangers do great work patrolling and keeping the campsites safe and clean.

The price for camping is incredibly cheap, especially for what you're getting! The views from each site are breathtaking. All are within a short walk to the dunes. You can rent snow sleds and go sand boarding. Theres gorgeous wildflowers all over in the spring and summer and the sunsets are always 10/10 here. We heard the distant songs of coyotes and smelled the oil from the fields. A very unique experience and a must for RV camping checklists!

No shaded area, a bit pricey for what you get

$50 a night with full hookup, but a little pricey in my opinion for what you get. No shaded area. Does have a pool and laundry area. Roses BBQ within 6 minutes away was good. Site was pull through. There are long term campers.

    Sand Surfing

This was a great place to stop on our roadtrip out West! We have actually been here twice, it's so convenient and right off I20 near Odessa! The workers are so friendly and we all five loved sand surfing!! There are pull through sites with electric/water hookups, picnic table, fire ring, grill and a shade shelter! There is also a bathhouse with showers and restrooms! So much fun, don't pass it by!

**UPDATE: We have been here 4 times now! Always great!!!

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Small, convenient, quiet CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 28 for 5 nights in early/mid September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, but narrow, as are the pull-through sites. The sites themselves all seemed mostly level. The CG was very quiet and peaceful. There were only 3 or 4 other campers in the CG while we were there. Our site, 9, was a pull-through, as were several, but some were back in. There isn’t any shade, but we had a decent breeze, which helped. Our dog loved frolicking in the sand dunes, but do watch out for goathead burrs, she found a few.

AT&T coverage was pretty good with 2 bars of LTE service and speeds up to 17 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 20 MB/s.

    Goldenrod RV Park & Propane

    Wonderful

I have lived here for 9 months. The office staff are friendly and helpful. They are family friendly and pet friendly which is a big deal for me. The people in the park are respectful. I have made many friends here and it feel we are more like a family then we are friends. When you have a problem with something, the office gets it taken care of really fast. I love the fact that they have shower houses and a laundry facility. This is a great place to stay at. I would recommend this place to everyone.

    Great!

Stayed 3 nights for free. Donations accepted. 5 sites available on a first come, first serve basis. Used 30 amp and water hook ups. 50 amp also available. Trash and waste disposal on site too. City park a block away. Clean and safe. Chamber personnel are welcoming and kind.

    Jal Lake Park

    It’s not bad!

We stayed here for a dump and refill after few days of boonedocking. It has water, 20/30/50amp and a dump station. No sewer but dump station is pretty close by with clear signs. There’s 6 spots for RVs to park. Enough space for big rigs and can park additional car on the side. There is a shaded picnic area and a grill.

There is a lake beside close by with a beautiful sunset which was a plus and the best part is, it’s FREE!

Downside is it’s off of a pretty busy road, so some noise from cars passing by.

Verizon had LTE 3 bars but not that fast for some reason. Video streaming lagged a bit.

There were about 2-3 other RVs staying and going. There is a 72hr limit. There is nothing around in the town though. Lowes grocery did have little more than necessities.

Would come again for quick refill.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

You think you're at the beach

I stayed here five nights in site number three, which is a pull through and a great view of the windmill and the day use parking lot.. In January, it gets pretty cold at night around freezing, but warmed up nicely every day. One day was so windy. It was rocking my fifth wheel like it's never rocked before. Yes, I live alone. It was very quiet with little noise from I 20. I did hear a train whistle, but then you can hear a train whistle just about everywhere in the entire state of Texas in the morning. I did see very small prints in the freshly blown sand. Watch out for rodents getting into your RV.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Sand dunes in Texas?!

General: Small (25-site) campground in one loop. Temporary park headquarters as the huge visitor center at the entrance was under construction when we were there.

Site Quality: Sites have paved driveways, covered picnic shelters, bbq, electric hookup, and water a spigot. Some sites are back-in and some pull-through. We watched some larger rigs try and fit into the back-in sites, which are smaller than the pull-throughs. Our site (25) seemed to have two picnic tables and two BBQs (there were some on the other side for the site next to us so not sure why there were two in our site unless two campers would come together?)

Bathhouse: There is one all-in-one and one regular restroom with two additional showers (and a connecting door between them. Hot water and soap dispensers but no paper towels. The showers were incredible – hot water, great water pressure, and clean. One of the best campground showers I have ever had!

Activities: Explore the dunes! There are no designated paths; you are free to climb the dunes and explore. Saucers are available to rent for $6 and wax for $1. The sunsets are beautiful. The constantly shifting sand makes beautiful patterns and great photographs. If the moon is not full, night sky photography.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here exploring the dunes (and the incredible shower!).

Guide to Kermit

RV camping near Kermit, Texas provides travelers with basic accommodations in the arid Permian Basin region. The area experiences extreme temperature fluctuations, with winter nights dropping below freezing and summer days regularly exceeding 100°F. Most RV parks feature gravel or dirt pads without significant natural shade due to the desert ecosystem.

What to do

Visit Monahans Sandhills State Park: Located 24 miles south of Kermit, this 3,840-acre park features sand dunes rising up to 70 feet high. According to one visitor at The Rise at Monahans - Lodge and RV Park, "Close to Monahans Sand Hills State Park where you can sand sled!"

Enjoy family recreation facilities: Some RV parks have community amenities for downtime between explorations. A guest at Park Place RV noted, "Amazing playground and pool for families beautiful shower facilities, lots of washer and dryers. Full hook ups."

Explore local culture: Nearby towns offer cultural experiences reflecting West Texas heritage. A camper at The Rusty Boot RV Park mentioned, "It's somewhere I would stay for a longer period as well to check out more of Woody Harrelson's hometown."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many travelers appreciate well-maintained amenities despite the challenging desert environment. A reviewer at Out West RV Resort described it as a "Clean, secure location. Nice fully gated park with full hook ups. No facilities yet. Big grassy area with gazebos."

Community atmosphere: Several parks foster friendly environments where longer-term guests create welcoming communities. According to one resident at Goldenrod RV Park & Propane, "The people in the park are respectful. I have made many friends here and it feel we are more like a family then we are friends."

Responsive management: Quick resolution of issues stands out as important in this remote region. That same Goldenrod camper noted, "When you have a problem with something, the office gets it taken care of really fast."

What you should know

Limited vegetation: The natural desert landscape means minimal shade coverage at most sites. A reviewer at Mesquite Oasis RV Park observed, "No shaded area. Does have a pool and laundry area. Roses BBQ within 6 minutes away was good. Site was pull through."

Noise considerations: Some parks experience traffic or community noise. A camper at Tra-Park RV Park reported, "This place is off the highway a bit but still pretty noisy. Across the street from rec center which had fair amount of traffic in early evening."

Park layouts vary significantly: Site spacing and organization differ between parks. One Tra-Park RV Park visitor explained, "The sites are crammed together with barely enough room for a table between the rows... I can see acres of sites across the park with many vacancies but they are not used."

Tips for camping with families

Check for pool availability: Swimming facilities provide crucial relief from summer heat. At Park Place RV, families appreciate the "Amazing playground and pool," making it suitable for extended stays with children.

Consider site space needs: Look for parks with room for outdoor activities. Out West RV Resort offers a "Big grassy area with gazebos" providing play space away from RV pads.

Ask about pet policies: Rules vary widely between parks. While Goldenrod RV Park is "family friendly and pet friendly which is a big deal," Kings Road RV Park has restrictions, as one visitor discovered they "don't have tent sites" and don't allow pets.

Tips from RVers

Utility reliability matters: In extreme temperatures, dependable hookups are essential. A traveler at Tra-Park RV Park mentioned, "Level gravel spots. FHUs were in good order."

Short-term vs. long-term considerations: Many parks have both overnight and extended-stay guests. One RVer noted The Rise at Monahans is a "Great 'no frills' stopping point. Easy to miss the turn in but I'm sure there will be a sign soon. Very new and still being developed."

Cell service planning: Coverage varies throughout the region. Most consistent connections are found near larger towns like Odessa and Monahans, while more remote locations may have limited or no service.
