Brackenridge Recreation Complex provides several horseback riding options along Lake Texana for equestrian camping near Matagorda, Texas. The complex features facilities specifically designed for campers with horses, with multiple trail access points around the 12-mile equestrian trail system. Winter temperatures average 50-70°F, making it ideal for outdoor activities during cooler months when summer humidity subsides.
What to do
Trail riding access points: Multiple entry points to the equestrian trail system allow riders to customize their route length. "We have stayed multiple times love it everytime, see many deer, & other wildlife, plenty of things to do, town is not to far, always clean restrooms & grounds, fishing is good," notes Samuel H. about Brackenridge Park & Campground.
Non-equestrian recreation: The complex offers diverse activities beyond horseback riding. "This was the perfect place to rest after a long 3 days of travel with a sick pooch. They have everything you would need and more. Disc golf, paint ball, hiking, bike trail, and of course fishing," explains Holly S. about her stay at Brackenridge Park and Campground.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early morning and evening hours offer prime wildlife viewing along lake edges. "Beautiful morning views of the lake and many deer in the field every night," reports Nancy V., highlighting the natural attractions that complement equestrian activities.
What campers like
Security measures: The gated camping areas provide peace of mind for campers with valuable equipment and horses. "24/7 security. Gated access to camp areas. 4 clean bathroom/bathhouse. Putt putt golf. Great fishing lake access," states Austin and Christel S. about Brackenridge Recreation Complex.
Water access: Direct lake access appeals to many campers seeking fishing opportunities. "My mother, sister & myself came across this little jewel and could not be happier. Our spot was directly on the water which is very calming, had the pleasure of gazing at the sunset over the water. Also awoke to a herd of deer grazing in our back yard," shares Amy C.
Multi-use trails: The trail system accommodates both equestrian users and mountain bikers without conflict. "Birds, open and clean air, nice trails to explore. The RV section seemed cramped but the tent section seemed spacious," notes Amy H.
What you should know
No swimming allowed: Lake Texana has restrictions on swimming due to wildlife concerns. "No swimming spot - rumor of gators in water," mentions Austin and Christel S. in their review of the area.
Campsite sun exposure: Limited shade affects some camping areas more than others. "This is the 2nd time we've stayed at Brackenridge. Sites are level. Asphalt. Nice views of the lake. We stayed in the pull through sites (124 and 125) but the other lots are shaded by beautiful live oaks," explains Brenda A. about Brackenridge Park and Campground.
Weekend popularity: The recreation area becomes significantly busier during weekends. "It is completely full this Saturday and there are lots of families, music and fires burning. I do not consider this to be a serene wilderness/wildlife area but a camping area full of activities," reports Andrea S.
