Flowing over and around huge slabs of limestone, the Pedernales River can be turbulent. But most often it is tranquil, and a great place to relax and recharge. We are just 30 miles west of Austin. Come over for an afternoon swim or hike, or load up your gear for an overnight adventure. The river awaits! Choose a site with water and electricity or hike to a primitive site. Bring your group to the Youth Group Camp or Equestrian Group Camp.

Perfect for different types of camping

You have the choice of camping at a tent site, park your RV, to glamp in a yurt or cabin, or even walk out to a more secluded “TentRR” site. Regardless of what choice you make, there’s a community kitchen with small appliances/dishes and the bathhouse with showers, toilets, and vanities. It really is the best of both, especially if you’re trying to camp for several days and would like to stay relatively clean and well fed. We’ve stayed there three years in a row now!

Living Waters on Lake Travis - Glamping on the Lake

Living Waters on Lake Travis is a lakeside venue for romantic getaways, yoga retreats, weddings, songwriting retreats, family reunions, work retreats and glamping (glamorous camping). You can rent one structure for a personal getaway or rent them all for a group event.

I attended a special event at this venue. There are various whimsical houses, cabins, yurts and tents in which to stay. There is an open lawn for group gatherings, a covered gazebo for outdoor yoga and a boathouse for lakeside activities. In addition there are amenities such as hammocks, lawn chairs, porches and tents in which to relax. The venue offers a variety of personal services such as massage, yoga, a private chef and watercraft rental.

Whether you would like to be active or sedentary, Living Waters on Lake Travis might meet your needs.

Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

One of my favorite spots in Texas

Pace Bend is one of my most favorite places to camp in Texas.

Not far from the old (and new!) Backyard (a great place to see live music in the live oak capital of Texas), Pace Bend is a quick drive away. A perfect spot to pitch a bunch of tents, jump off cliffs, swim and barbeque. Maybe 45 minutes from downtown Austin (without traffic).

I won't lie the cliff diving kinda freaks me out. Be careful is all I'm saying!

There are several primitive campsites throughout the park with picnic tables, grills and toilets. Additionally there are 20 RV hook-up type sites that offer running water, electricity, restrooms and showers.

    Love Love Love This Park

Blanco State Park is just beautiful. It sits right on the shores of the Blanco River and we had a gorgeous view of the water. The restrooms were in top shape and our site had a covered picnic table.  In our trip around Texas, this was one of our favorite state parks.  Easy to book online and very inexpensive with our Texas State Parks pass.  We were even able to walk into the cute town of Blanco and enjoy some fantastic BBQ at Old 300!  Would love to return.

    Pedernales Falls State Park Campground

Quick getaway if you can book.

Pedernales is a classic Texas state park with a lot to offer and a short distance from Austin. It is often fully booked and your best chance to book a spot is far in advance or create a notification through the Texas State Parks site if a spot opens up. In the warm weather there's lots of swimming to be had, not in the falls themselves which are prone to flash flooding, but in another part of the park. Occasionally the water is home to poisonous algae which makes the water neither kid or dog friendly. Many of the sites have small shelters over their picnic tables.

    Tallest waterfall in Texas

Colorado Bend is beautiful and secluded. The best thing about this place is the swimming,. It's a great place to cool off during a hot Texas day, with some cool waterfalls to check out as well. I haven't explored them, but I have heard that the caves that are there are supposed to be a pretty sweet too.

We needed to stay in Fredericksburge for a family affare and this fit our needs perfectly. plento of room to walk the dogs, level sites and easy access to the area.  If I am ever in this area again and need a campsite I will state here.

    Over 200 primitive campsites

Pace Bend is one of the few reliable parks in Central Texas and near Austin that will always have an available campsite, while all of the other prks require a reservation months in advance. You can even show up late and find a site.

Although, these sites are primitive, so not all of them have picnic tables or grills.

Also, there is great mountain biking trails, cliff jumping and swimming.

    Cliffside Camping

We went camping over memorial weekend at Pedernales Falls. We did the primitive camping. This was some of the best TEXAS camping we've done. We found a really nice spot that was on the cliffside and had an incredible view of the hill country. It was isolated enough from other campsites. We saw deer in the morning in the grassy area next to our tent. We also found a path down to the river that was close by.

River was a great way to relax after decent hiking! Lots of wildlife, Deer, birds and Hogs!!

    Great Hill Country Find

I went for an early morning hike in full swing Texas summer heat. I decided to do the Falls hike following the water and Hackenburg loop. Ended up doing around 3 miles right before 10:30 (started at 9). From there the sun started to beat down and enjoy some time in the water but heads up as of today the water was pretty low. So many wildlife saw some deer, birds (singing the whole time I was there) and some cool lizards!

    Very nice park

Stayed there 3 nights during our visit to the Texas Hill Country. The park is 5 minutes from Fredericksburg. The pads are gravel with full hookups. Very clean laundry facility. There is a central area with dog park and place to walk. The reason for the 4 rating is that our site was at the top of the park with a downward slope which made it very difficult to level. Fredericksburg is a must see and so are the wineries. And great restaurants too. If in the area, we would definitely return to this park.

    Pedernales Falls State Park Campground

    Beautiful River and Falls

Let me start by saying avoid July if possible and don't sleep with food in your tent. This was one of our first Texas camping excursions and it could have gone much better. Also we camped in the back country.

Pros: The falls are beautiful, lots of trees to help provide shade, and typical nice state park trails for the area. A beautiful small river near the back country camping. Short hike to primitive camping.

Cons: July is hot. The trails to the back country camping are just service roads, a big disappointment. No fires, but this should be expected.
