Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

One of my favorite spots in Texas

Pace Bend is one of my most favorite places to camp in Texas.

Not far from the old (and new!) Backyard (a great place to see live music in the live oak capital of Texas), Pace Bend is a quick drive away. A perfect spot to pitch a bunch of tents, jump off cliffs, swim and barbeque. Maybe 45 minutes from downtown Austin (without traffic).

I won't lie the cliff diving kinda freaks me out. Be careful is all I'm saying!

There are several primitive campsites throughout the park with picnic tables, grills and toilets. Additionally there are 20 RV hook-up type sites that offer running water, electricity, restrooms and showers.

    Shaffer Bend Recreation Area

    Weekend Trip

Shaffer Bend Rec. Area has a beautiful setting in the Texas Hill Country right off of Lake Travis. At the gate entrance you have wonderful landscape views. All of the camp sites are situated next to or a short walk to the water.

The camps are clean. Most are equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. In the large camp area, some have BBQ pits with a couple big communal grill/smoker. The same area has a horse pen as well if you're an equestrian enthusiast on top of a camper. It is a primitive campground. The large camp area has a couple port-a-poties. At the gate entrance there are men's and women's rooms with running water. That's about 3 miles from the camp sites. So, be prepared to dig holes, bring your own portable toilets, or hold it.

Considering you're on the lake, the water access is surprisingly limited. There are a few areas along the water you can walk in, but there's not a dock or boat access. I recommend sandals or water shoes since there's a fair amount of plant life along the shore. The same areas you can walk in would be good for kayaks though. The camp sites are situated along a narrow section of the lake. So, there would be plenty to explore.

    Shaffer Bend Recreation Area

    hot

the campsite is good for equestrians. if you're a kayaker you can put in here and travel down and take out elsewhere. the lower Colorado River Authority has plenty of places along the Colorado to facilitate this. we stayed here for 4 days before Memorial Day weekend and it was hot. there are no showers or bath houses. there are Porta-Johns located throughout the campground. Texas in summer can be unforgiving. Lake Travis is home to boaters and Jet skiers. there are fish if you're into that.

    Small RV and tent-dry camping

Relaxing and clean. Very windy, so no bugs! Dogs love running along water’s edge and jumping in. Horses ok too from the looks of it. Sites 1-13 closer together and more in site if each other but still ok. Great hiking and walking. Small RV plus tent for us.

    Wildflowers Ji

This is a great little place on Lake Travis. Going in the spring time is the best because of all the wildflowers. Trails are easy. Campsites are clean with a fire pit and a grill. There is easy access to the lake to go swim or paddle. Be mindful that Lake Travis is not a constant level lake and this is a narrow and shallow part of the lake. There is a chance of low water levels. Also it’s Texas and there is wildlife. We saw about a 5 ft rattlesnake. Overall a great place!

Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

Pace Bend Park + Lake Travis

Pace Bend Park is conveniently located a short distance from the city of Austin and on the shores of Lake Travis. The park is managed by the Travis County Parks Department. The entrance fee is $10 per car and the campsites are all first come first served. There are almost always campsites available, but the best campsites do get taken early. On the east side of the park there is easy beach access to the lakeshore and water. On the west side of the park there are a number of coves. Access to the water is possible by scrambling over and down rocks to the waters edge. Many people cliff jump off the cove cliffs, but be sure to test the depth of the water before jumping. Many people get injured every year jumping off the cliffs. Some of the campsites have developed pads to set up your tent. Other campsites just have clearing to set up your tent. There are ample trees available for hammock hanging. Because the park is located so close to the city many people visit the park for day use. The day time crowd can be a bit overwhelming and loud at times. At night the atmosphere generally calms down a bit. Many of the campsites have picnic tables and some have grills. A few have fire rings for campfires, but the park is removing many of the rings. Depending on the time of the year and the dryness, there is often a county fire banned in the area and park. My favorite campsites are along the west side of the park and the coves (N. Gracey Cove).

    Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area

    No quiet getaway

Booked this place last minute based on previous reviews. This place is not what I would call a quiet getaway. Sites are somewhat large, some without any trees or shade which is torture most of the year in Texas heat. Be warned that if you stay at sites 1-12 you are right next to the boat ramp where people will be loading/unloading at all hours of the night. Its 5 am currently and I have been bombarded with diesel engines and bright lights directly into my campsite since 3 am. Picture below of the view from my tent as they unload another boat.
The prices are $10 more than some surrounding area spots that offer much more than this place. Look elsewhere if you desire a place to relax and enjoy nature.

    Krause Springs

    Eggy Car

This sounds like an amazing place to escape the Texas heat! The rope swing and swimming holes sound perfect for a fun day trip. It's good to know about the uneven paths though, thanks for the heads up. Makes me think twice about bringing my low-rider, Eggy Car, since it might not handle the terrain. Maybe next time I'll need to borrow a friend's truck for the weekend. Definitely adding Krause Springs to my list!

Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

    Lakeside Camping

Plenty of camp sites to choose from with fire pits, grills, benches, and close by bathrooms. Very close to Lake Travis where there's always gorgeous sights. Would definitely recommend.

The same areas you can walk in would be good for kayaks though. The camp sites are situated along a narrow section of the lake. So, there would be plenty to explore."

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Campers frequently mention site spacing as a positive feature. At Live Oak Ridge, visitors appreciate the layout: "Large sites with ample vehicle parking that offer substantial distance from the neighboring sites give room to bring multiple vehicles or a boat along with the RV."

Lake views and water access: Many campgrounds offer scenic water views. At Willis Creek, a camper shared: "Very peaceful, clean, spots are pretty spread out with covered picnic tables, fire pit and grill. Site 4 looked the best but 13 was beautiful. Can't get to the water from sites, but the views were amazing and the walk short!"

Night sky visibility: Rural locations provide excellent stargazing opportunities. At Grelle on Lake Travis, one visitor remarked: "Only there for one short night but it was delightful to sit in the water of lake Travis and watch the stars on a warm texas summer night."

What you should know

No dedicated equestrian facilities: While searching for horse campgrounds near Granger, Texas, it's important to note that none of the campgrounds in this dataset offer dedicated horse corrals. Some areas like Shaffer Bend have space for horses, as one camper noted: "The camps are clean. Most are equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. In the large camp area... has a horse pen as well if you're an equestrian enthusiast."

Seasonal concerns: Texas heat affects camping comfort significantly. "We stayed here for 4 days before Memorial Day weekend and it was hot. There are no showers or bath houses. There are Porta-Johns located throughout the campground. Texas in summer can be unforgiving," warned a visitor at Shaffer Bend.

Limited water levels: Lake levels fluctuate seasonally. At Grelle, a recent visitor found: "I brought my family of four here for our first solo camping trip with two littles and we loved it! The drought caused the lake to be pretty dried up so our water front view didn't have much water!"

Tips for camping with families

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children often enjoy animal sightings. At Grelle, a camper observed: "There were lots of deer, really neat to look at. The deer didn't even seem bothered by us."

Beach areas for kids: Pace Bend Park offers water access points that work well for families. One camper described it as having "great cliff jumping and deep-water soloing opportunities for the seeking. Also great swimming/fishing holes."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling information: RVers appreciate level sites that simplify setup. At Arkansas Bend, a camper with a trailer reported: "We were very surprised at how level our gravel campsite was. It made setup a breeze. The loop makes backing into your spot easy."

Tree clearance warnings: Low-hanging branches can damage larger RVs. At Krause Springs, a camper warned: "My only warning is low hanging trees everywhere. I couldn't imagine trying to navigate the campground in a 5th wheel or class A. You could do some rooftop damage."

Campground amenities: Hookup availability varies between locations. Willis Creek provides necessary services: "Water and electric connectors working perfectly. Fire ring and grill at all sites."
