Caverns amazing, campground okay

This place is definitely worth a visit! The staff are knowledgeable and amazing. These caverns are a hidden gem!

Giving 4 stars because we had a pull through campsite and the sites were very close together, somewhat uneven, and in full sun. There are lots of other campsites for tenters and those staying longer term.

Campground was $25 for the night with electric and water.

Cave tour is $28 and absolutely worth it!

Interesting location and the caverns are one of a kind

This is an affordable campground within the grounds of Caverns of Sonora.  Someone suggested this as a must see and it was very unique.  The campground is basically a parking lot and we were one of two campers.  They don't take reservations and it was raining and cold.  The staff is amazing - it's always great to meet interesting people who care about their work and love sharing their unique property.

There is a cavern tour which takes you down into the dark cavern.  If you have claustrophobia, don't go.  We were okay but you walk through darkness the the guide turns on lights which illuminate these unique caverns.  It's pretty cool but I started to wonder if the air had a lot of CO2 because my husband and I felt slightly queasy - similar to altitude sickness.  I can imagine it's hard to get air way down under the earth.

The town in Sonora is small and has a few places to buy groceries but it is really pitch dark at night and we took a wrong turn and found ourselves on a dark road.  If you like geology and/or caves, it's great to visit and stay.

You gotta come here

Caverns are awesome and the ability to camp no more than 500 feet from the cave entrance is unmatched. Everyone here is so friendly and the tour is a must. RV spaces aren’t much (and no sewage hookups) but it was quiet and easy. Cell service was spotty but I had success when holding the phone up high. Lovely space with tons of birds!

Reasonably priced but needs some attention

The primitive camp sites were only $15 (and change) but be careful with the picnic tables. They are old, wobbly and deteriorating due to age.

The free hot shower was great but they could take the cleaning up just a notch.

Again, not bad for the price - and plenty of primitive camping spots available

The caverns off the I 10

This is a family run business. They were very friendly and accommodating. The cavern tour is $20 but we’ll worth it. -Pleasant coolness after a long hot drive. The tour guide was knowledgeable. I didn’t really visit the gift shop but it looked interesting. For sure worth a visit if you are in the area!

Very nice campground

The actual campground is more off the freeway than the map shows. Still it’s not THAT far. The campground has partial hookups (electrical and water). No WiFi or sewer (due to the cave). The gift shop is amazingly fun. The cave tour was definitely worth the $20/person. Our guide Lacey was a rockstar. Dress lightly for the cave. We came out soaked!

A Latenight God Send

I was trying to put in as many hours of driving as I could, not realizing how sparse things like actual campgrounds are off of I-10 in the middle of Texas.

Luckily I found this place here on the app. I arrived around 11 pm and located the tent camping loop, set up and crashed for the night. The loop was nice and grassy, with picnic tables for each site.

In the morning, I walked to the gift shop to pay for my night. Tent camping is $15.

I took a quick shower and, honestly, the shower area could definitely use a really good cleaning, but it had been quite a few days since I’d seen a shower, so I wasn’t too picky.

The staff there was really nice and I stuck around long enough for a tour of the caverns ($20) before getting back on the road.

Great place to stay!

My wife and I were quarantine traveling and we stopped here on our way to Lake Tahoe. We arrived at night and couldn’t see anything. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful hill country views when we woke up the next day. Didn’t have time to stop for a tour of the caverns, but would absolutely stay again.

Camping at Marvelous Caverns

Sonora is famous for its “living” calcite caverns, and the Caverns of Sonora RV Park and Tent Campground is the perfect stepping-off point to visit the Crystal Palace or the Devil’s Pit. The caverns are well off the main highway so this private, on-site campground is an excellent convenience. It is 48 sites (RV length 40’ max) on a quiet working ranch with free roaming peacocks. Full hookups, bathrooms with showers, and a great gift shop offering homemade fudge.

Right where it needs to be . Nothing else close by

We stopped here on our way to the Texas AVID Expo. While all the close by RV parks were full; filled with oil field workers The Caverns was available.

Although it was off the highway a bit the nice grassy area with trees made it worthwhile. We forgot our mosquito spray and the woman in the shop loaned us hers for the evening.

There were lots of deer in the field and the upper area to watch. Cell phone service was limited .

Quiet campground in the Texas Hill Country

The Caverns of Sonora is a nice little spot hiding in the Texas Hill Country about 5 miles west of Sonora.

the drive in through the hills is a nice change from the interstate. There are several RV sites with water and electric and about 20 tent sites. Sites are nicely shaded. There are peacocks and deer roaming the grounds.

there is a gift shop/store and a modern shower/bathroom.

we only stopped one night, so we didn’t tour the caverns.

sunrise was beautiful over the hills.
