Special barns accommodate overnight stays with free sawdust bedding provided at dedicated horse-focused camping locations.
What to do
Trail riding opportunities: Bear Creek Horse Camp connects directly to extensive bridle trails. "Big South Fork is the perfect place for the outdoor enthusiast. Literally anything you want to do, you can find it here - horseback riding, ATV riding, hiking, biking, rock climbing, kayaking, backpacking, camping, fishing, hunting, swimming... The Big South Fork river is some of the best smallmouth fishing around."
Stargazing sessions: Bandy Creek Campground offers exceptional night sky viewing conditions. "Camped here a few years ago and got wonderful night sky shots. Definitely worth a stay if you're visiting Big South Fork. Great campers and great scenery."
Swimming options: Multiple recreation areas provide water activities during summer months. "Just ran into this spot and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was especially for the cost. Showers and facilities were great and clean. Tent camping and RVs were separated in different loops which is nice. The recreation area was a real nice surprise in terms of scenery. The rafting looked great at the right time of year."
What campers like
Clean bath facilities: Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park maintains well-kept shower buildings. "The grounds were kept pretty decent, however, I went through the areas close to our site and picked up a lot of trash from each section. They have a little store near the sites, very friendly staff."
Spacious camping circles: Several campgrounds use a wagon-wheel layout for group camping. "The Campground is set up in what I call wagon train circles if your going with a large group it's perfect. People parked their toys and cars in the middle and set up in the sites around the hub."
Food storage options: Frozen Head State Park provides bear-safe storage at backcountry sites. "Unfortunately our original spot was Panther Gap Rockhouse. Unfortunately this site was wet! Everything was wet! There was a fire ring and tables available at this site. But we moved to Tub Springs which was amazing! Very windy but dry! Fireplace, fire pit, bear safe storage container and several tables were available."
What you should know
Water availability varies: Many primitive sites require bringing your own water supply. "We stayed at the Group site at Bandy Creek Campground this spring - really a great experience. It comes with a pavilion with award winning fireplaces and your own restroom. Ideal for large groups/families."
Cell service limitations: Most campgrounds have limited or no connectivity. "We have been camping at Frozen Head since I was a child. In fact, I went to my first day of Kindergarten from the campsite. The campground is wooded and perfect for that woodsy camp feel. There is no wifi and no cell phone reception."
Access challenges: Great Meadows Campground requires careful navigation. "The drive there is a little long and no cell service for the most part but isn't that what camping is about anyway. The campsites are off to thereselfs and make for great camping with privacy."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly loops: Look for wagon-wheel style camping areas that allow kids to play safely. "Sites are in cul de sacs. Lake is beautiful and really close. Staff is super nice and helpful. Nice playgrounds and pools. WiFi is not currently working. AT&T and Verizon service is good. Lots of wildlife around. Nice hiking trails."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Plan early morning or dusk walks to spot wildlife. "Sites have food storage lockers (not sure if all do) as the area is a bear habitat. We saw some deer and turkeys, so there's wildlife around for sure!"
Playground access: East Fork Stables offers facilities beyond horse-related activities. "East Fork Stables is a HUGE equestrian campground that, guess what....you don't have to have a horse to stay at! They have a whole loop complete with a pavilion cookhouse and annoying triangle bell that's perfect for campers, tents and hammocks."
Tips from RVers
Site length considerations: Check site dimensions before arrival. "The sites were a bit short and we couldn't park our tow vehicle in front of our 17' camper. So large campers beware. There are limited parking spots near the shower house."
Water hookup distance: Some sites require extended hoses for water connections. "I also wish they would have mentioned the length to water hookup. We ended up having to go buy a longer water hose bc the hookup was more than 30 foot away. We now keep a 50 foot hose, but didn't realize at the time there was actually hookups that far away."
Seasonal availability: Most horse campgrounds near Pall Mall operate from April through October. "Campground has Cabins, Bunk house, full hook-ups and primitive spots. There are stalls and tie lines with round pens and paddocks scattered around. Trail system is wonderful with all the views anyone could ask for."
