Equestrian camping opportunities abound within a 50-mile radius of Cheraw, South Carolina. This region features multiple ponds, forested trails, and open meadows particularly suited for horse owners. Winter temperatures typically range from 35-60°F, making off-season camping comfortable with fewer insects and crowds compared to summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.
What to do
Fishing access: Multiple ponds at Cheraw State Park Campground offer excellent angling opportunities. "Off season gem! Didn't have any expectations of this place since it's in the middle of nowhere and not many photos. We loved it here... Super cheap. We stayed four nights for under $100," reports Sara M.
Bird watching: Bird sanctuary with dedicated trails for wildlife observation. "We will be back here! BIRDS!!! Bird sanctuary so birders will LOVE this campground! There is also a really nice museum type of visitor's center," notes Bran P.
Canine training: Book pond reservations for retriever training sessions. "They have several ponds that can be reserved if you have retriever dogs to train," explains Brenda L. from H. Cooper Black Jr. Field Trial Area.
Kayaking and canoeing: Boat rentals available seasonally at reasonable rates. "When it isn't off season they have cheap boat rentals," mentions Sara M. "There is a boardwalk that goes around a large portion of the lake that connects the campground with the beach area. You can rent kayaks and canoes to take out on the lake," adds MaryAnn P.
What campers like
Lake access: Waterfront sites at Morrow Mountain State Park Campground provide direct water views. "We exhausted ourselves hiking and canoeing and much more stuff to do! Nice sites with electric hookups. Firewood available," shares Sara C.
Spacious campsites: Room between neighbors makes for comfortable stays. "The camping spots were clean and well kept... There are plenty of large spaces for RVs with lots of room around them for privacy. It felt very private even though there were people all around," explains MaryAnn P.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses receive consistent positive feedback. "The bathrooms and showers were amazingly clean and they had a giant heater you can turn on over the showers when it's cold outside!" says MaryAnn P. about Cheraw State Park.
Winter camping advantages: Off-season deals with fewer crowds. "Barely anyone here in December, so it feels so nice to be out of our house but not needing masks constantly," notes Sara M. "We were lucky enough to catch a great view of Jupiter merging with Saturn last night."
What you should know
Campground size variations: Some areas compact while others offer more space. "Only about 25 or so sites. All with water and electric hookups," reports Bill S. about Cheraw State Park. "The regular sites are usually full, and very close, but the lake front sites are gorgeous and worth being close to neighbors," notes Trina W.
Reservation requirements: Book early for weekend stays at popular horse campgrounds near Cheraw, South Carolina. "Large area where dog training sport hunting is permitted. Not a campground. However home to the largest rally race in the southeast!" warns John P. about H. Cooper Black Jr. Field Trial Area.
