    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    Family fun!

Nice clean and quiet campground. The address online took us to the ranger station. Turn left BEFORE bridge. Couldn’t see sign from the road. The section we were in was “no pets allowed”. My kids loved the beach, swimming was not deep. Beach was big with adjacent playground. Lots of pavilions all over. The area was a little crowded for my liking.

    Austin Campground

    Tucked Away Gem

Found this location while going to Elk State Forest for the elk bugling. Was very happy to find this location. Had clean bathrooms with running water and showers. Campground was tucked away between two mountains and sat next to a creek. Staff was friendly. Plenty of camp sites. Have yearly campsites which is apparent since some of the campers have more permanent structures around or attached to them. Pets allowed. Not the best place for hammock camping but have a few sites with good trees. Out of the main path but nice place to stay.

Russell P Letterman Campground — Bald Eagle State Park

    Relaxing week great sites

Stayed in the modern camping section. Easy access to camp ground. The check in process was just to drive to the site and set up which was different but very easy. The sites are private on the sides with some green space to play on. Lots of extra places to park extra cars or bring a second vehicle with a boat.

The kids had fun riding the bikes around the loop and taking the short cuts cut in around the loop. We had fun walking to the foot bridge to go fishing.

The camping area was very quite both mornings and evenings. We saw the park rangers drive through multiple times per day.

The bathrooms were clean. There are no shelfs in the showers (except for a bar of soap) but they had hooks to hang your clothes.

The racoons were a fun surprise on our last night! We left the grease trap from the Blackstone out and the they found it. We did not see any bears though we heard they are there.

We had smoke from Canadian forest fires so haze in the pictures is smoke not haze or rainy days! The walking trails are great. You can see the largest white swamp oak in Pennsylvania!

Definitely check out Penns Cave too.

    Hills Creek State Park Campground

Well established and popular- perfect for groups

This is one of the main attractions for the area. Locals come here when the weather is nice.

We stayed in yurts, which are round tents ($38 per night). We had a cozy wooden deck and slept four people in two bunk beds. We also had a cooking stove, refrigerator, heat and electricity.

There is plenty of fishing and hiking to go around.

Really recommend this campsite if you have a little extra money to spend and are looking for a light getaway with friends.

If you're looking for a secluded place for yourself or with a loved one, I would look around the area for a less-popular campsite.

    Pettecote Junction Campground

    Soul Cleansing

Petticoat Junction campground is nestled in the PA Grand Canyon with Pine Creek on one side and the Rails to Trails on the other of the campground. This ideal location provides a nice tranquil environment with opportunities for active adventures. It had been several years since our last stay at PJC, but the new owners have done amazing improvements and upgrades to many areas of the campground which are greatly appreciated. Everyone we interacted with(owners/employees) were friendly and gave us the feeling that they were glad we chose to stay with them.

There are a variety of camping options from season sites, primitive sites, cabins, glamping tents, and RV hook-ups for water and electric(along the creek). We stated in one of the water/electric hook-up sites along the creek, which was wonderful. Very flat and larger than average in size, which was nice not being on top of your neighbor. Water pressure was very good and the WIFI signal was better than many campgrounds we have stayed.

The location of PJC is perfect for fishing, floating/kayaking, and biking/hiking the rails to trail. There are many nearby hikes throughout the canyon for the more adventures travelers. The office has biking/tubing/boating rentals for its campers. Additionally the firewood for sale is priced well and is very good quality, not the cheap smoky pine found in most places. If you need a break from civilization to reset and relax, I highly recommend PJC!

    Happy Acres Resort

    Nice Camp in the Mountains

We tent camped and they had openings on Memorial Day weekend. The weather turned out to be bad for camping but management was very accommodating with our requests to change dates and spots. Unlike many campgrounds that cater primarily to campers/RVs, they have nice spots in wooded areas for tenters. Some even have water and electric hookups. There was a decent playground area but the bathrooms could use a remodel. Our spot had a nice soft, flat spot for our tent but was a little cramped (they did have larger spots) and it would be nice to have a grill attached to the fire pit. The camp ground fire wood was kiln dried but cost $15 for a bag that lasted less than a day (and we used it pretty sparingly) so I would suggest buying wood nearby where it can be found much cheaper (please don't transport wood from far away as this contributes to the spread of invasive species like the spotted lanternfly). The proximity to Little Pine State Park was nice.

    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    No cell, no problem!

General: 73-site campground; most have electric hookups, and some are FHU. Pets are only permitted at selected sites. There are also 20 (13 rustic and 6 modern) cabins. Cell service is extremely limited to non-existent (Verizon).

Site Quality: Pads are gravel and most appeared to be level. Site 70 was at the end of the loop which is why we picked it. A picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook complete each site.

Bathhouse: As has been our experience in all PA state parks, the bathhouse was pristine, and the shower (for no additional cost) was clean with plentiful hot water and was very much appreciated.

Activities/Amenities: Coin-operated laundry. A playground is in the campground and there is an additional one at the swimming beach. The swimming beach is open from mid-May to mid-September, from 8 am– sunset. Electric motorboats are permitted on Moshannon Lake. Boat rentals are available in season. Permits are required. 24 miles of hiking trails, including two trails directly from the campground to the lake. In the summer, there is a camper store/concession stand. Hunting is allowed in season. There are 4.3 miles of mountain biking trails.

I used to think Oregon State Parks were the best, but Pennsylvania State Parks have them beat by a mile. We have yet to be disappointed by the amenities(especially the clean bathrooms) offered at the half-dozen state parks we have visited so far.

Guide to Renovo

Renovo sits within Pennsylvania's mountainous terrain at elevations reaching over 2,000 feet, making it a prime destination for both standard camping and upscale outdoor stays. The region experiences four distinct seasons with warm summers and cold, snowy winters that create varied camping conditions. Campgrounds around Renovo offer diverse accommodation options ranging from primitive tent sites to fully outfitted luxury glamping.

What to do

Wildlife viewing opportunities: At Sinnemahoning State Park Campground, visitors can observe diverse wildlife throughout the seasons. "Living only a little over an hour away this is one of our 'go to's.' This park has so much to offer. There's plenty of Trout fishing opportunities. If you enjoy boating the dam is beautiful. There are also plenty of trails," explains Sadie S.

Hiking to elevated viewpoints: Some trails in the region offer significant elevation gains and panoramic canyon views. The western rim trails provide more rugged, less crowded hiking options. "Unlike Leonard Harrison, Colton Point on the western rim of the Pine Creek Gorge isn't a tourist hub. The campsites are private and you get to hike in. The trails aren't built up with steps and the like, but I think the Colton Point Turkey trail is much more manageable even without them," notes Emily S.

Bicycling rail trails: The converted rail corridors offer miles of relatively flat, scenic cycling routes through the canyon areas. A camper at Little Pine State Park Campground reported, "The campground is beautifully kept. Bathrooms and sites were nice. It's a great stop if you're doing rails to trails or swimming at the beach up the road. Note to get to both places you'll need to drive."

What campers like

Dark night skies for stargazing: The remote nature of the Renovo region creates excellent stargazing conditions away from light pollution. One visitor to Sinnemahoning noted: "It was fun trying to use maps along with GPS to find our way to the campground. There is zero cell service/WiFi at the park, or for at least 5-10 miles from it. Plenty of trees in the northwestern end for hammocks, and from our hang we were able to watch squirrels, chipmunks, fireflies, and a variety of birds."

Educational visitor centers: Several parks in the region maintain interactive educational centers. "Adults and Children alike will love the park office/Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park. Learn about this building's green construction (LEED) geo thermal heat, rain water harvesting system, recycled materials and more! Step inside to view elk, bear, birds and other wildlife," writes Paula L.

Creek-side camping locations: Pettecote Junction Campground offers sites directly adjacent to Pine Creek. A camper shared, "This is one of the best campgrounds we've ever stayed at. Beautifully maintained and landscaped, and the sites are level. Our site was literally on the river, we even saw an eagle. What I love most is how accessible the biking trail and river are."

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds in the Renovo area have little to no cellular connectivity. "The campground is very small, and cell service is non-existent, but that's what we were looking for - a quiet getaway. The campground has a small playground, and there is a nice visitors center just up the road," notes Rachel B. about Sinnemahoning.

Shower facilities vary widely: Shower availability and payment systems differ between campgrounds. At Pettecote Junction, "Their bathrooms are so clean I almost swept from joy. Keep in mind you need quarters for a hot shower but I only needed 2 quarters for 6 minutes, plenty of time."

Seasonal considerations: The region experiences significant seasonal changes affecting camping conditions. "Visited early June. Very quiet and clean campground. Check out Park Office/Wildlife Center, Elk Country in Benezette. Amazing vistas off Ridge road; great hiking all over. Make your first stop the park office and grab a bunch of maps to see what's around. No cell service at all - a blessing!!!" shares Matt M.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. At Happy Acres Resort, "Playground was huge with multiple playsets suitable for all ages. Bathrooms/showers were clean and well kept. There was a basketball court, shuffleboard and carpet pool that you could borrow equipment for."

Educational activities: Look for parks with nature programs for young visitors. "They offer a free pontoon boat tour of the lake, reservations needed because spots fill up fast! During the fall at the nearby dam rangers set up an elk viewing spot with binoculars," explains Amber N. about Sinnemahoning.

Biking safety: The rail trails provide safe cycling away from vehicle traffic. "My kids love riding their bikes here. There are a few nice scenic trails that go to the lake and through the woods. Some are kid bike friendly. The nature center is great! Kid friendly and fun!" notes another Sinnemahoning visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: When glamping in Renovo, Pennsylvania with larger vehicles, research specific site dimensions. "Check out pictures of your site before reserving. The distance between spots was good. Roads were a little narrow but manageable. I'm not sure about other sites, but we did not have a water hookup, just a spigot we could fill from," advises Greg J. about Russell P Letterman Campground.

Luxury glamping preparation: For higher-end glamping stays, plan ahead for specific amenities. "We stayed for 5 nights with a partial hook up for our brand new 32 foot travel trailer. Other reviewers had mentioned that sites were small, so we specifically asked for a larger site. We ended up getting a corner site right on the edge of a hill looking down on the main office and playground."

Leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven sites requiring leveling equipment. "The sites are fairly spaced apart and many are shaded by large pine trees. The pads are all gravel except for the handicapped pad, which is paved," notes a visitor at Sinnemahoning about the terrain and site composition.
