    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    Family fun!

Nice clean and quiet campground. The address online took us to the ranger station. Turn left BEFORE bridge. Couldn’t see sign from the road. The section we were in was “no pets allowed”. My kids loved the beach, swimming was not deep. Beach was big with adjacent playground. Lots of pavilions all over. The area was a little crowded for my liking.

    Cowans Gap State Park Campground

    Hilly but happy

This state park is at the top of the mountain and has a smaller lake perfect for a short kayak trip or fishing. Lovely views from the lake and very nice secluded sites. Our site was up a hill a little but we were good. We were right aside of flushing bathrooms and the dump station. We didn't like you had to go all the way out and around to dump and then out and around again to leave. Other than that very nice park with hiking trails, lots of beautiful pavilions, picnic areas, building that had food for sale, peddle boat and kayak rentals, fishing, beach area for swimming, multiple boat launches. Definitely need a bicycle to get to day use area as the loop is very long. Also, watch for no pets allowed signs as it is just the first part of the sites in Area A.

    Cowans Gap State Park Campground

    Lots of trash and noise

If you are used to primitive/secluded camping this is not the campground for you. We arrived and there was a ton of trash in our site. Someone left their air fresheners, handbag tags from marshalls, and a ton of other junk. This campground is also very noisy. There are supposed to be quiet hours but people were playing loud music from their cars, from speakers, and whatever else until at least 11pm. Our site had no privacy either, we were right next to several other sites (closer than other state parks we've been to). Physical distancing and mask wearing was not enforced/required. People in the close quarters of the restroom were not wearing masks and didn't seem to mind getting within 6 feet of other people. The woman at the front office who we checked in with even took her mask off because it was fogging up her glasses. Oh, and the wood that we purchased from the camp host was wet, so the fire was a dud until a friendly neighbor gave us some of his wood.

The only positive thing about this campground was the hiking. The first day we hiked up the mountain to the west of the campground, and the second day we hiked up the Tuscarora Trail to the east of the campground. No other campers were hiking these, so we got to appreciate nature by having the trails mostly to ourselves.

Russell P Letterman Campground — Bald Eagle State Park

    Relaxing week great sites

Stayed in the modern camping section. Easy access to camp ground. The check in process was just to drive to the site and set up which was different but very easy. The sites are private on the sides with some green space to play on. Lots of extra places to park extra cars or bring a second vehicle with a boat.

The kids had fun riding the bikes around the loop and taking the short cuts cut in around the loop. We had fun walking to the foot bridge to go fishing.

The camping area was very quite both mornings and evenings. We saw the park rangers drive through multiple times per day.

The bathrooms were clean. There are no shelfs in the showers (except for a bar of soap) but they had hooks to hang your clothes.

The racoons were a fun surprise on our last night! We left the grease trap from the Blackstone out and the they found it. We did not see any bears though we heard they are there.

We had smoke from Canadian forest fires so haze in the pictures is smoke not haze or rainy days! The walking trails are great. You can see the largest white swamp oak in Pennsylvania!

Definitely check out Penns Cave too.

    Seven Points (PA)

Favorite PA campground — the view !!!

Love staying at Seven Points CG.  This Corps part got a spruce up in 2022.  The roads on the point loop were upgraded.

Tough to get waterfront spot during main season, but fall is beautiful here.

Chipmunks are fun to watch.  Point loop is my favorite. Sites 128, 126 126a, 154 are perfect.  Easy access to the lake from your site.  Bath house is up at the top of the hill.  Be prepared for that walk.

Get water at the dump station on the way in!!! Easier than trying to attach to the spigots on the loop.

Trough State Park nearby is a great place to hike!!

    Paradise Stream Family Campground

Most well kept campground I’ve ever visited.

Paradise stream is a beautiful campground. They go above and beyond to keep the grounds immaculate. The fire pits are even top notch. There are many activities including boating on the lake, fishing, pedal carts, shuffle board, mini golf and swimming. The staff is very friendly and goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. Planning another visit this year.

    Primitive Camping, Great location

This primitive campground is located a few miles from Seven Points Recreation area, but far enough away to enjoy a real camping experience without electricity and running water. Not to worry, the showers are located at Seven Points. There aren't many waterfront sites, so book early. Some sites not listed as waterfront can be used for boats (with a permit from the campground office).

Guide to Alexandria

Raystown Lake encompasses 29,000 acres of parkland with a 118-mile shoreline, situated in the Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania near Alexandria. The lake sits at 786 feet elevation and maintains a summer water temperature around 80°F, making it ideal for water activities from May through September. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing with occasional snowfall affecting camping access.

What to do

Mountain biking on Allegrippis Trails: The trail system accessible from Ridge Camp offers 36 miles of single-track riding with varying difficulty levels. "From the entrance of the camp loop there is a trail head! Big spacious sites that make pitching a tent easy with water available just a few sites away no matter where you stay," notes a visitor at Seven Points.

Fishing year-round: The lake provides opportunities for catching striped bass, walleye, and catfish. "Raystown is a huge boating destination. During daylight hours you can still hear the boats on the lake," reports a camper. Boat-in camping sites allow you to combine fishing with overnight stays.

Winter activities: While summer sees the most visitors, off-season camping offers solitude and different recreational options. At Black Moshannon State Park Campground, a visitor notes: "Nice campground with quiet 250 acre lake for kayaking. Good birding." The winter months offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities on many of the same trails used for hiking in summer.

What campers like

Waterfront sites with direct access: Campsites with lake views and water access rank highest among reviews. "We stayed at one of two walk-in sites at Greenwood. The highlights were a spacious camp site, nice bathrooms, little light pollution (we saw the Milky Way!) and hearing screech owls at night," shares a camper at Greenwood Furnace State Park Campground.

Clean facilities: Bathhouses and restrooms receive frequent positive mentions. "Very clean campground. Quiet. Some hiking. Lake nearby," notes a visitor. Another adds: "The bathhouse (one in the loop) was clean with 3 showers. A playground near the sites at the entrance also."

Privacy between sites: Many glamping locations close to Alexandria, Pennsylvania offer secluded spots. At Susquehannock, a camper reports: "Very cool camp. Loops for RVs, higher on the hill, waterfront loops on steeper grounds for tents, and some walk-to sites adjacent to parking right at the point which double as boat-in. Some site right on the water, can walk right into the lake."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Waterfront sites book quickly, especially for summer weekends. "We wanted a waterfront spot, and although we booked over a month in advance none were available," notes one camper. For premium sites at Cowans Gap State Park Campground, plan to book immediately when the reservation window opens.

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds have minimal or no connectivity. "This campground helped me finally convince my fiance that not all 'campgrounds' are actually waterpark/family fun/RV parking lots. There is little to no phone service here and it's not super close to town, so come prepared."

Terrain challenges: Sites at some campgrounds sit on slopes or uneven ground. "With the slope, however be aware of the kids and adults riding around on bicycles and skateboards." Another camper notes: "Most of the campsites are on a slight slope but they're still bearable."

Tips for camping with families

Beach facilities for children: Dedicated swimming areas provide safe recreation. "We went down to the swim beach and our kiddo made sand castles and swam in the clear water," mentions a visitor. Many beaches include amenities like changing facilities and food concessions.

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer ranger-led programs. At Crooked Run Campground — Prince Gallitzin State Park, "Rangers were wonderful to work with in setting up teaching opportunities for the girls. We will definitely go back."

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play equipment. "Each loop has a playground and bathhouse," notes one review. For glamping options close to Alexandria, Pennsylvania with family amenities, check campground maps to select sites near these facilities.

Tips from RVers

Site levelness varies: RV campers emphasize the importance of checking site details before booking. "One backup attempt into the site and (according to our LevelMatePRO app) it was perfectly level...that was definitely a first for us. We set our chocks and started our setup," shares a visitor at Waterside Campground and RV Park.

Dump station facilities: Multi-lane dump stations at larger campgrounds reduce waiting times. "From the time we arrived and filled up the fresh water tank at the ultra-cool 4 lane dump station, I knew we were in for a great weekend."

Utility hookup limitations: Not all sites offer full hookups. "Note; the sites our family were at did NOT have sewage hook ups. I do not know if this applies to all sites." Check reservation details carefully and prepare accordingly.
