Walt Haring Sno-Park & Campground

Cross-country skiing trails and snowmobile routes extend directly from Walt Haring Sno-Park & Campground, making it a dual-purpose destination that functions as winter recreation hub and summer camping area. Located in Winema National Forest near Chemult, this facility sits on a large asphalt parking area that accommodates RVs up to 50 feet alongside tent campers.

The campground operates as an open lot rather than defined individual sites, giving campers flexibility to spread out across the paved surface. John F. notes it's "hard to realize you're so close to the main highway" despite the proximity to Highway 97. Four vault toilets serve the area, and a seasonal dump station provides convenience for RV travelers. The facility includes picnic tables and fire pits, though fire restrictions may apply during dry periods.

Miller Lake sits 11 miles away via dirt road, offering fishing and water access for those willing to navigate what reviewers describe as washboard conditions. The route provides views of Mount Thielsen, and several mention the lake as a worthwhile destination despite the rough access. Summer visitors can explore hiking trails that branch from the campground, and the open sky makes for good stargazing conditions.

The asphalt surface and accessible facilities make this an ADA-friendly option, though the industrial feel may not appeal to campers seeking a traditional forest experience. Cell service varies by carrier, with some reporting poor coverage. Skyeriver . suggests it works best as a "quick overnight" rather than extended stay. The pay station is sometimes covered during off-season periods.

Walt Haring serves overnight travelers and winter sports enthusiasts who need accessible parking and basic amenities rather than a secluded camping experience.

Many campers appreciated this convenient overnight stop with good facilities and ample space. Common feedback included well-maintained amenities and surprising quiet despite highway proximity. Some noted the asphalt lot setup lacks traditional campground feel.

One night

We drove over the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway and were looking for a place to stay. This spot is excellent for boondocking. It has a dump station (seasonal) and fresh water spickets (not sure if you could hook a hose to them). The parking area sites are huge. The only knock is that cell service is very poor.

Nice Quiet Spot

We just stopped for one night on our way south. We were the only ones there so super peaceful and quiet. It’s not a traditional RV campground in that you don’t really have individual spaces. There are 4 pit toilets and a dump station along with fire pits and picnic tables. It was May 11th and there was still some snow in the area and the pay box was covered up so with no way to pay, the price was right too.

Great spot for a quick overnight in the summer

nearly had the entire place to myself minus a couple travel trailers, but there’s enough room to spread out to where no one even notices each other. Plenty of trail to hike in the summer and great place for dogs to walk. Very quiet and hard to realize you’re so close to the main highway. Dump station is present on site. Definitely will stay here again.

Keep going

This is probably a great spot for those looking to take off on the nearby dirt roads. During the summer, the actual site is basically a huge asphalt lot right next to the highway with access to a few pit toilets. I would recommend it only for a quick overnight if everything else nearby is full. If you have more time, it’s worth driving further down the gravel road to Miller Lake, much more quiet and scenic.

Nice Sno-park campground off 97 near LaPine

We stopped by this sno-park campground in early April to check it out for future reference. Since the snow season it was over it was completely empty on Easter weekend. The oat box was taped shut but vault toilets were open and well-stocked. There was still a little snow on the ground but campsites were nice. Nice network of cross-county trails and large parking lot. Good AT&T cell reception.

Flies X 1000

Quick overnighted on flat asphalt, open sky is ok. ADA friendly. Including a couple camp spots for tent ADA accessible to. Restrooms ADA. Good gazing, dark skies. Can hear Hwy 97. Trails nice for morning jog. I wouldn’t want to stay more then a quick overnight unless it was winter for snowmobile fun.

Nice easy to find campground

This campground is well maintained and easy to access. There is a lot of room available to park a trailer or RV on the blacktop. Walt Haring Sno-Park is close to 97 but it was not crowded when I was there. Pit toilets are available I did not see any other hookups tho. Plenty of picnic tables and spots for tents. There is a nice lake (Miller lake)about 11 miles on a dirt road past the campground and there is a nice view of Mt. Theilson on the drive up to the lake. The road there is a little rough due to the washboard on the dirt road.

Close to Crater Lake

I stayed here after visiting Crater Lake. It was easy to find and lose to Crater Lake after doing a visit there. I stopped here because I didn't give myself too much time and wanted to find a place before dusk.

This has all them amenities one would need for a typical camping night.
