Platter Flats Campground offers dedicated equestrian camping near Coleman, Oklahoma with 35 sites featuring electric and water hookups. The campground accommodates both horse owners and regular campers throughout its April to September season. Situated along Lake Texoma, the terrain includes rolling hills with mature trees providing valuable shade during hot summer months. Lake access points and trail systems make this a popular destination for riders.
What to do
Fishing access: The lake at Platter Flats Lake Texoma provides excellent fishing opportunities. "Great place for fishing, and if you are looking for a wonderful sunset, you have found the best place for it. Generic campsite but close to the lake. Great stay vacation if you are local or camping weekend with the kids," notes Leah P.
Trail exploration: Hikers can enjoy the same trails designated for equestrian use. The trails feature clear markings and connect to other recreation areas. "There is a long equestrian trail that goes over to Lakeside Park across the lake that can also be hiked pretty easily that has a couple secluded spots to swim along the way. The trail is well marked and easy to follow," writes B H.
Swimming spots: Several secluded areas along the trail system offer water access where both people and horses can cool off. Jessica S. mentions: "Platter Flats is usually quiet. It's been our favorite campsite for years because of this. We've always been able to find and open spot with a nice view."
What campers like
Peaceful atmosphere: When visiting during weekdays or off-peak times, the campground offers a quiet environment. "I grew up in the area, my family really loves it here. Nice and peaceful. We prefer the primitive area," shares Hope F. about Oklahoma Platter Flats Campground.
Horse watching: Even non-equestrian campers enjoy the unique experience of seeing horses throughout the campground. "We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses! But remember it will also smell like them so camp on that side at your own risk," advises Rachael H.
Lake views: The campground's position offers scenic views across Lake Texoma, particularly at sunset. One camper mentions, "Beautiful rolling hills with mature trees. Great shade especially in the equestrian area. Well maintained. Wonderful lake views with amazing sunsets."
What you should know
Weekend congestion: Traffic within the campground increases significantly from Friday through Sunday. "The worst thing was the traffic. People would drive to swim, fish, use the restroom, visit others in adjacent campsites or just cruise around with no aim from 8 AM to 10PM Thursday thru Sunday afternoon," explains a camper at Lake Murray Resort.
Dust conditions: The dirt and gravel roads throughout the equestrian area can become dusty with increased traffic, which may affect both campers and horses. Campers with sensitivities should consider this when selecting sites.
Background noise: Beyond vehicle traffic, the nearby railroad can create intermittent noise. "It should be noted there is a rail freight line and siding not far from the camp and once the vehicle traffic slows down, the trains seem to start. The train horns at crossings may be a bother to some."
Tips for camping with families
Horse interaction opportunities: Families with children often appreciate the chance to observe horses up close. At Elephant Rock Campground, one camper notes: "Half of the campground is an equestrian camp. There are great hiking trails and beautiful views. Good shady spots. We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses!"
Site selection: When camping with children, choose sites further from the main road to minimize dust and traffic concerns. "The equestrian area provides shady spots with mature trees, particularly valuable during hot summer months."
Water activities: Lake access points provide swimming opportunities that appeal to families. "We camp at Lake Murray State park, Elephant rock RV area... Full hookups as well as some water and electric only. Of all the areas we camp.... this is the best. Hiking, golf, fishing, great Lodge with a wonderful place to eat."
Tips from RVers
Hookup logistics: RV sites in the equestrian area offer electric and water connections, though some planning may be required. At Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area, campers advise: "I really like the fact that we could boondock our camper with in reason of the table area. (side of the road) plenty of room to let the slide out."
Reservation timing: For equestrian camping with an RV, make reservations well in advance, especially during peak season. "Reservations only: 877-444-6777 or recreation.gov."
Leveling requirements: Prepare for potentially uneven terrain in some sites. "The sites weren't leveled and you just throw your tent wherever you want... The spot we got had a fire ring and a table."
