Cowan Lake State Park offers diverse camping options set in southwestern Ohio's rolling landscape. The area sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation with limestone bedrock and fertile soils supporting a mix of hardwood forests. Campsites range from primitive spots with no utilities to full-service sites with electricity, water, and sewer connections.
What to do
Paddling excursions: Multiple launch points available around Cowan Lake with calm waters suitable for beginners. "We were able to kayak on the lake the night of a Friday the 13th moon. It was beautiful... The next day we also went out for another paddle under the bright sun. The boat ramp and parking lot is easy to use and has a good layout," reports a visitor to Cowan Lake State Park Campground.
Local exploration: Historic Waynesville offers antiquing and dining options just 15 minutes from Frontier Campground. "Wonderful gem close to Caesar's Creek and historic Waynesville. Sites are level with plenty of shade," notes a camper who visited the area.
Beach activities: The swimming area at Buck Creek State Park Campground provides an alternative water experience. "There are two swimming beaches, the public one and one in the campground. The campground one is smaller a short hike to get to it," explains a camper who visited with family.
What campers like
Private sites: Many tent sites at Cowan Lake offer separation from other campers. "Our campsite didn't have any trees but they have planted a lot of new trees. I assume this due the previous trees having to be cut down due to Emerald Ash borer damage. Our campsite didn't have any shade but others did so you really have to pick wisely," advises a camper.
Clean facilities: Stonelick State Park Campground maintains well-kept restrooms. "The restrooms are a quick walk and very clean. The showers and park are a small walk but also super nice. There's a few trails at the entrance to the campground and a canoe/kayak launch a few minutes drive from the entrance," shares a recent visitor.
Educational features: Nature displays and learning opportunities enhance the camping experience. "The trails here are easy and short. I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," notes a camper who appreciates the educational aspects.
What you should know
Site selection: Choose carefully at Cowan Lake as shade varies significantly between sites. "Nice place, spread out, plenty of room between sites, very little shade as they have cut down a whole lot of trees," warns a camper who recommends researching site options before booking.
Connectivity issues: Cell service varies widely between campgrounds. At Rocky Fork State Park Campground, "Great Verizon cell coverage" is available, but other providers may have limited service in the region.
Seasonal maintenance: Facilities condition can change throughout the year. "The shower house was very clean, the crew was around regularly to empty trash and clean. The hot water in the shower house left something to be desired (took forever, lasted about a minute and a half)," notes a Rocky Fork camper.
Tips for camping with families
Biking opportunities: Paved trails near glamping close to Wilmington, Ohio provide safe cycling for children. "Nice cul-de-sac areas for groups with areas for kids to play. Ground is pretty level so bringing a bike for kids to ride on is nice. There is a playground in walking distance too," shares a family who stayed in a Cowan Lake cabin.
Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "The campground was filled with parents and kids riding bikes, playing, and having fun. Nobody was out of control or obnoxious. Plenty of dogs were present," reports a visitor who appreciated the family-friendly atmosphere.
Evening activities: Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure offers structured programming for children. "The camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1!! And the kids loved it," explains a holiday weekend camper.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven terrain at some campgrounds. "Site 60, 46 feet max length, ours 39. Just finished setting up. A bit rough getting RV setup, but pad is fairly level, so easily setup to use slides," notes an RV owner at Cowan Lake State Park.
Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when parking. "Sewage, water, and electrical were all easily accessible. The only odd feature was the placement of the sewage. If you're not careful you can easily park your RV on top of the drain, so keep an eye out for it," warns a visitor to Cedarbrook Campground.
Internet access: For those needing connectivity while glamping near Wilmington, Ohio, some campgrounds offer surprisingly good options. "Internet here on t-moble 5G home is 90Mbps down and 6 to 20Mbps up. Verizon on cellphone, only 10Mbs down, 1-3Mbps up. ATT cellphones are similar to Verizon. Great enough for work or play," reports a tech-savvy camper.
