    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Accommodating and Fun!

This campground is well attended as most lots are filled each time I visit. The bathrooms are clean. The sites have LOTS of extra space in between for hammocks, kids running, and privacy. There are lots with trees and lots without. There is a commissary that includes everything you could possibly need as well as a hot grill. There is a beach for swimming, trails for hiking (not long distances), a basketball court and multiple playgrounds. When we were there, they had an outdoor movie theater for the kids and served complimentary popcorn. It was nice and hassle free.

Cozy cabin cured my camping craving!

The adorable cabin fulfilled my tiny home dreams and camping craving! The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker. Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs. Bathroom had tub/shower, clothesline to dry swim suits or hand-washed clothes, toilet, sand sink vanity. Bedding and towels were provided and were crisp, clean white. WiFi was a bonus and although it wasn’t the fastest it was very useful when looking up nearby activities. Our cabin had a grill, an outdoor table with four chairs, a swing and a fire pit which we enjoyed our last night there. Staff was friendly and helpful. There were laundry facilities within the park and lots of activities but we didn’t take advantage of any of that during our brief stay. Overall, we were very pleased and would gladly stay again!

    Large Campground

Autumn is the best time to camp in Ohio. Lots of small bathrooms. Lake access. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the fact there was no quick reentry. Had to wait for rvs in front of me to register.

    Morgan's Riverside Campground & Cabins

    Nice, lively

This campground has nice facilities- a nice hot shower (four stalls only for the entire campground) a total of 6 flush toilets, a snack bar and a picnic pavilion with electrical outlets if you need to charge your phone. We were on a riverside campsite but unfortunately none of the brush had been cleared so we could not see the river. Imagine how much more fun it would be to actually be able to see the river and watch all the people floating by! It wouldn't be that hard to cut down some brush to create a view.

The noise was not the greatest. They assured us that there was a night person who monitored noise and partying, and there were signs everywhere saying that quiet hours started at 10, but a group of loud, drunk men right on the river were allowed to yell and make a ruckus until at least 2am, probably later, because I stopped looking at my clock after that. This was really irritating that they would be allowed to party so late and make so much noise that you could hear them all through the property. There were also kids in the water right in front of our site from sunup until way past dusk, screaming their heads off constantly, so if you are camping for peace and quiet, this is not the place for you. It was barely the place for me, but I wanted to be on the river for a weekend so I just tried to ignore all the noise.

Our site was quite muddy but I guess that's to be expected when you are next to the river.

I'd called a few times to make sure they would transport our kayaks and they said "yes, sure" as if that was no big deal, so I was a bit shocked to discover upon arrival that the cost of transporting a personal kayak was the exact same cost as renting one of theirs. This is pretty expensive, and why would we bother with transporting our own if they charge the same to use theirs? If I had known, we would have brought two cars, so I found that very irritating. It cost us $67 for two people to spend 3 hours on the river. Pricey, in my opinion.

All in all, I would return, but be more prepared with two cars and heavy-duty earplugs to block out the loud parties.

    Rocky Fork State Park Campground

    Meh

We chose this campground for its proximity to Serpent Mound. It's very middle of the road. The camp store is better than average, but the grounds themselves leave a lot to be desired. Very little privacy, small, uneven sites, bathhouses out of an 80s slasher movie. So much goose poop. The firewood we purchased from the camp store was just awful. Wouldn't light, it just smoked. It's not the first time we've had this problem with wood from an Ohio state park camp store.

The staff was super friendly and everyone we encountered was very nice, but it's certainly not somewhere I would want to spend more than a night.

    Long's Retreat Family Resort

    My family’s favorite place.

We’ve had a permanent site at Long’s for a couple of years now. My wife and kids want to live there for the summer, and I sure can’t argue. There is LOTS to do. Swimming, water slides, canoeing, go-cart racing, mini golf, and a full arcade give plenty of variety. Of course, relaxing by the campfire, grilling hot dogs and making s’mores is really what makes the time with the kids special. The owners are wonderful people who take pride in what they do, and very carefully select the right people to be part of their team. The showers and bathrooms are always squeaky clean and the grounds are exceptionally well maintained. I’ve found permanent campers and weekenders alike to be a great group of folks. Long’s Reatreat is the perfect place to unplug and unwind.

    Winton Woods Campground

Great county park in a beautiful setting!

This is a great county park! It has a nice “campground” feel set in a large pine trees and wide sites but has 50-amp full hook-up sites. The campground is set in Winton Woods County Park which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati.

There are 123 campsites including RV sites, tent pads, and camping cabins. Most RV sites are back-in but there are 12 pull-thru sites. There is a myriad of sites here from 50-amp full hook-up with paved pads and patios to 30-amp gravel sites. Sites have fire pits, picnic tables. Campsites in the front section (1F – 25F and 1R – 12R) are big rig-friendly with paved roads wide enough to easily maneuver. All utilities worked accordingly and were well-placed in the site. Our 4G Verizon phone got good reception and we were able to get plenty of antenna television channels. The online reservation system is easy to use and gives you an array of sites/cabins to choose from. Be aware that lots of people use this park on the weekends so it can get quiet busy.

There are lots of amenities at this park. Within walking distance of the campground is Winton Woods Lake which has a harbor with boathouse, snack bar, boat rentals and playgrounds. There are miles of paved and rustic hiking trails. There is a camp store, dump station, laundry, restrooms/shower house, boat/kayak launch, and fishing access. Located in the park is a golf course and horseback riding center.

You are within a few miles of everything … grocery, gas/diesel, restaurants, and plenty of shopping. The park is close to I-275 and I-75 making for easy access to major interstates. One place you should not miss is Jungle Jims international grocery and market. This totally eclectic, sprawling "grocery store" has so much to offer. They pride themselves on providing unique foods from all over the world. I could spend hours in this store perusing the isles of which are sectioned off into country and region. There are entire sections on Indian foods, wines, cheeses that you have never heard of, and tanks with live fish ready for the filleting. Also within close proximity is Greaters -one of the country's best ice cream shops (according to Food and Wine). Just down the street is a new person favorite sandwich shop called Izzy's which is famous for their corned beef and delicious potato pancakes.

Loved this park because you have a very nice campsite with 50-amp full hook-up site with lots to do in the area. Our site was level and the roads were easy to navigate in our motorhome. The paved trail around the lake was great for walking/jogging and perfect for launching our kayaks.

We would definitely stay here again.

    Stonelick State Park Campground

    Great experience

Me and my partner went during Labor Day and left the fourth. We were there for three days and two nights. It was amazing. Our spot was a small walk to the water so we could fish and still keep up with the fire. We were right against the woods. There was a perfect flat spot for the tent. The trees were great cover from the bright sun. We were also able to walk to the restroom and could see the whole building from our site. We were site 009. So the bathroom was across the road. Everyone was very friendly there as well! The only downside was the grill for the fire pit. It’s at an angle so cooking on it was difficult as it was hard not to spill food

Guide to Sardinia

Glamping close to Sardinia, Ohio provides rustic comfort in a rural setting. This part of southern Ohio sits at approximately 900 feet above sea level and features gently rolling hills covered with oak-hickory forests. Most glamping sites in the region open in early April when overnight temperatures typically rise above 40°F, with fall colors peaking in mid-October.

What to do

Hiking and biking trails: Stonelick State Park Campground offers trails that connect directly to campsites. "The restrooms are a quick walk and very nice. The showers and park are a small walk but also super nice. There's a few trails at the entrance to the campground and a canoe/kayak launch a few minutes drive from the entrance," notes Jess H.

Fishing spots: Long's Retreat Family Resort maintains fishing areas that attract families throughout camping season. "Good place to fish for bluegill and catfish. Awesome place to swim during daytime hours, just remember to use caution and don't go out of designated area," explains Lisa S. from a nearby campground.

Water activities: Water features prominently at glamping sites near Sardinia. "This Park & Campground is wonderful. Just the right size for all your camping and outdoor needs. Great fishing opportunity and there's also a golf course," writes Lisa S. about A.J. Jolly Park & Campground.

Outdoor games: Multiple sites feature recreational activities beyond water sports. "The pool is heated, spacious. Cornhole, playgrounds, basketball available. Live music on weekend. Walking trails to lake," mentions Brad R. about Beechwood Acres Camping Resort.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise the maintenance of glamping sites. "The bathrooms were average, not great but not gross. We were there on their Halloween weekend, with a fun site-decorating contest and trick or treat in the afternoon," writes Megan M. about Shawnee State Park Campground.

Level sites: Flat camping areas make setup easier for glamping near Sardinia. "Site 60, 46 feet max length, ours 39. Just finished setting up. A bit rough getting RV setup, but pad is fairly level, so easily setup to use slides," reports Johnothan R. at Cowan Lake State Park Campground.

Privacy between sites: Many glampers appreciate the spacing at certain campgrounds. "Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites. Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path," explains Jay T.

Large common areas: Communal spaces enhance the glamping experience. "The lot was VERY large and well maintained. The asphalt pad was decently level; a picnic table and fire ring were included," notes Kim H. about her stay at Cowan Lake State Park Campground.

What you should know

Cell service variability: Connectivity differs significantly between sites. "Internet here on t-mobile 5G home is 90Mbps down and 6 to 20Mbps up. Verizon on cellphone, only 10Mbs down, 1-3Mbps up. ATT cellphones are similar to Verizon," explains Johnothan R.

Seasonal limitations: Some glamping facilities have restricted operating dates. "Love no cell reception! Quiet clean and staff (owner) is always pleasant and helpful!" mentions Robin R. about Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure, which primarily operates during warmer months.

Wildlife encounters: Local fauna can impact camping experiences. "Clean, quiet and peaceful. Had alot of poison ivy in the tree lines and trails but not a bad experience over all," warns Brittany S. about Stonelick Lake State Park.

Reservation requirements: Advanced booking becomes necessary during peak periods. "This is our first trip to Rocky Fork State Park. We are impressed with the campground amenities and spacious camp sites. Over 40 full hook up sites! Will definitely be returning," states Sandy O.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Structured recreation keeps children engaged. "They have an in-ground pool, a small store for camping needs, firewood delivery and propane refills. They also host events and if you check their event calendar on their website, you can see what's going on during your stay," suggests Chaz C. about Beechwood Acres Camping Resort.

Safety considerations: Parents should prepare for water features. "We were a little nervous as the cabin is so close the river. This is part of the charm but when you have a 3 year old in your group then it is smart to keep an extra sharp eye on the kiddo as the river is a huge draw," advises Kenpocentaur K.

Entertainment options: Families benefit from rainy day alternatives. "For those who want to 'Walk-On' camp please take a look at the photo of the neon yellow paper as how the park approaches this will be different in the future," Kenpocentaur K. shares about Morgan's.

Campsite selection: Family sites require specific features. "The campground was filled with parents and kids riding bikes, playing, and having fun. Nobody was out of control or obnoxious. Plenty of dogs were present," observes Kim H.

Tips from RVers

Site limitations: RV glampers should verify accommodations. "Sites are drive-up with plenty of room for a tent or two and fire-rings. Some sites may have trees for hammocks. Can get loud with lots of RVs in spots nearby," Clay A. notes about Stonelick Lake State Park.

Hookup availability: Utilities vary between glamping sites near Sardinia. "This is a vantastic campground with a variety of things to do there. It sits on a lake with a kayak launch site right in the campground," explains Suzy M. about Winton Woods Campground.

Campground access: Road conditions affect RV arrival experiences. "This is a very nice campground. Nice lake, boating, playgrounds, bath houses, some full hook up sites. There are more good sites than bad. 4,5,9,10, 147-165 those were my favorites. Small town with stores and restaurants was only 8 min away," shares Jarrod M.

Weather adaptability: Seasonal conditions impact RV setup. "Ground is pretty level so bringing a bike for kids to ride on is nice. There is a playground in walking distance too. Great crappie fishing in early May just steep cliffs to get down to the water," writes Renée C.
