    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    Park is Great, Campsites Suck!

Stayed here in the “primitive” camp. You are basically staying with your neighbors in small cleared areas where you can see everything everyone else is doing and if you have one of the sites nearer to the parking areas, you will have people walking through your campsite all day and night from the ones in the rear. From what I saw, the electric sites in the main campground aren’t much better. I mean this is a midwestern state park camping experience for sure. If you’re expecting any amount of privacy, think again.

The lake is pretty beautiful. The trails are well marked and the horse trails go on for miles and miles so if you have horses this is a great place to trail ride and if you’re a hiker who is not afraid of horses, you can always enjoy the equestrian trails for some serious mileage!

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

    Great Campground

Lots of great sites to pick from, lots of loops, shady sites , secluded sites, handicap sites and more. We go at least once a year for the Ohio Bigfoot Conference which draws people from all over the country. The bathrooms are good, the shower houses are good and the campground store has anything you may have forgotten. Friendly staff, hiking trails, boating and more. They have horse camping and trails further down the road and a primitive loop on Bigfoot Ridge. So much to see and do a weekend isn't long enough.

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet and Beautiful

This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites. There are no showers, but the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly ever morning. You need to be careful when booking, especially if you are trying to pitch a tent, as some sites are quite sloped. Our site was huge and right next to the water spigot.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Equine Camping

I loved to camp in the Horse camping area but this year they are allowing tent campers to camp there and it is just not safe.  There are multiple tents, sometimes in between horse campers.  There are children running around and since this in the back of the campground with no supervision, the campers are leaving garbage at the sites and in the fire pits.

There are two camp hosts in that area and they do the best they can to educate people on horses but most do not understand they were even booked in the horse camp nor do they understand that horses can spook.

The hosts are trying to clean up after these bad campers and reporting them but there does not seem to be anything they can do. They would never allow this kind of thing to happen in the main campground.

If the campers are allowed to camp in the horse camp then the horse campers should be allowed in the main camp.  I sure would  like a full hook up with electricity and water for my horse trailer.

Whats fair is fair.  Why even designate a section just for Horse campers if you are going to allow primitive campers to camp there.

Last year there may have been one or two tents here and there through out the season but this year the tent campers outnumber the horse campers.

Guide to Magnolia

Horse campgrounds near Magnolia, Ohio offer diverse terrain for riders with elevations ranging from 970 to 1,200 feet throughout the surrounding area. Most equestrian camping facilities remain open from April through October, with limited winter availability at select locations. Access roads to horse trails can become challenging after heavy rainfall.

What to Do

Trail riding opportunities: Mohican Wilderness provides extensive riding areas with river access. "We go every year and do the 20 mile kayaking trip, such a nice little spot along the river & the best way to kick off summer!" notes Lexi K. about Mohican Wilderness.

Shooting sports: Some equestrian camping areas include additional recreational activities. At Fernwood State Forest, "Gun range 5 mins away or so" according to jaysha L., making it a spot where riders can combine trail time with target practice at the Hidden Hollow Campground.

Fishing access: Many horse-friendly campsites provide fishing opportunities along waterways. At Jefferson Lake State Park, visitors appreciate the "nice hiking trails and the lake is nice" as noted by Kellie A., with trails that connect directly to water access points.

What Campers Like

Spacious sites: Horse campers need room for trailers and equipment, which many local campgrounds provide. At Mohican Wilderness, Andrea F. reports, "Even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax."

Clean facilities: West Branch State Park receives consistent praise for maintenance. Joe I. notes, "First time at this park I can see why it's always booked up... Bathrooms were clean separate showers verizon works well here," at West Branch State Park Campground.

Quiet atmosphere: Many equestrian campers value peace and solitude. At Jefferson Lake, Kimberly reports, "This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites... the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly every morning."

What You Should Know

Reservation requirements: Popular horse camping areas fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. About Salt Fork State Park, Jay B. advises, "Sites are packed together like other parks and majority are large and level. We stayed in G loop (G33) and were more than satisfied with the site."

Cell service variations: Connectivity differs between campgrounds. At Jefferson Lake State Park, Eddie notes, "AT&T 5g with 3 bars. Not many restaurants or grocery nearby. Better make sure you have what you need bf you travel."

Water availability: Some campgrounds have limited water access. At Fernwood State Forest, Donald F. reports, "🚱 hand pump available, grey water pits and trash cans available. Here late April through early May. 22 total sites, never more than 4 people camping here, including us."

Tips for Camping with Families

Horse riding programs: Family-friendly stables offer guided experiences. Lisa D. shares about Canton/East Sparta KOA Holiday: "This is our favorite KOA! I have 4 kids and return at least 1x per year. Great family owned KOA. Horseback riding on site."

Playground access: Several horse campgrounds include play areas. At Beaver Creek State Park, Matt H. recommends, "We got a site near the playground, which my 3 year old enjoyed. The campground wasn't busy and we had a lot of privacy."

Swimming options: Water recreation complements horse activities. At Salt Fork State Park Campground, Jacqueline F. notes, "Other than the trails, there is a stone house to view as well as a cave. We explored both and thought they were both interesting."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many horse campgrounds have uneven terrain. At West Branch State Park, Andrea F. warns, "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches."

Hookup limitations: Check electrical options before booking. Eddie reports about Jefferson Lake, "Only 5 electric sites. Very clean pit toilets. Well maintained campground. A few equine sites. Only 2 electric eq sites. Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord."

Access restrictions: Some roads limit RV access near equestrian areas. About Beaver Creek State Park Campground, Bounding Around cautions, "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!"
