What to do
Horseback riding on maintained trails: At Mohican Wilderness, riders can access miles of trails directly from the campground. "They offer on river and off river sites. Open grassy or wooded sites. The sites are spacious and with the option to park your trailer where you want (grass sites). They are full of amenities like: horse back riding, shooting sports, canoeing, playground, swimming lake, putt putt and more," notes Shannon P.
Water recreation with horses: Many equestrian sites provide access to water features where horses can cool off. "The lake was high this weekend and the beach was a bit under water, but still fun. The boats and sounds of summer with children laughing and splashing while adults sit on the sand," reports Tina D. from Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground.
Multi-day trail experiences: Riders can plan extended trips connecting various trail systems. "This is another of our favorite Ohio State Parks. The campground is setup in a nice layout with each of the separate sections having a spoke and wheel layout with a bathhouse in the middle. Sites are roomy and we like the wooded feel," writes Marshall P. about Delaware State Park Campground.
What campers like
Large sites with trailer access: "Sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," advises Katelyn P. about Alum Creek State Park Campground.
Privacy between campsites: Equestrians appreciate the separation between camping areas. "Space and Privacy...the two things that bring me back to this campground year after year. We have never had a 'bad' campsite at the Alum Creek State Park Campground. Each camping space is separated by trees and brush. And there is plenty of room!"
Trail variety for different skill levels: Riders find options for varying experience levels. "Plenty of hiking trails and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. There is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone," explains Jill B.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: "We camped here in our camper in early July 2017. There are a lot of things to do in the area. We visited the Ohio Caverns. The tour is worth the money, the 'gem' mining was fun for our younger kids," shares Leon H. about Buck Creek State Park Campground.
Weather impacts on facilities: "First Campground site I went to had a large mud puddle full of hornets. I asked to move site and was accommodated. It was right after a heavy rain storm and so maybe it was just a fluke," notes Jan B.
Availability patterns: Many horse camping sites require advance reservations, especially during peak seasons. "The prices here are reasonable, however most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (lakefront) are always taken," explains Catherine.
