Best Cabin Camping near Fort Loramie, OH

Several cabin rentals dot the landscape around Fort Loramie, Ohio, with Lake Loramie State Park Campground and Grand Lake St. Marys State Park offering heated cabin accommodations. Cabins typically provide basic furnishings including beds, tables, chairs, and refrigerators, though amenities vary by location. "The cabins are heated but pets are not allowed," notes one visitor regarding Lake Loramie's accommodations. Most cabins include electricity and some form of climate control, with state park cabins generally featuring more basic setups while private resorts like Arrowhead Lakes and Fireside Resort offer more comprehensive amenities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The KOA cabins at Wapakoneta and Dayton provide standardized accommodations with predictable amenities, while state park cabins tend toward the more rustic end of the spectrum. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly during summer months and weekends when cabins fill quickly. Several campgrounds offer year-round cabin rentals, though policies vary seasonally. Camp stores at Lake Loramie and Grand Lake St. Marys provide basic supplies, while Wapakoneta and nearby towns offer more extensive shopping options for groceries and camping supplies. Visitors staying at Natural Springs Resort or Venture Out Resorts should check specific amenity lists, as these private facilities typically offer more furnished cabin options than state parks.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

Beautiful setting, lots of trees and a steam that runs through it.

We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin. It has a pool and lots of kids activities. Gravel roads aren’t great for small kids learning to ride bikes but ok for older kids and adults.

    Kiser Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet Park

This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn’t allow any kind of boat with a motor. It also features a beach , 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn’t allow pets.

The campground itself has 20 electric sites , 56 primitive sites and 4 camper cabins. All the electric sites are pull through and all sites have a fire pit but only the electric sites come with picnic tables.

Due to off season and COVID the camp store is closed and there is no camper host or park office staff around.

We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed. It was hard to tell where we were headed or how long a trail was. I tried using the new Detour app and it wasn’t very accurate for this park.

We did have good Verizon cell coverage.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

    Nice KOA

A nice KOA, with fire pit areas and picnic areas. Each state has a picnic table and the gravel site that we had was level. There is a group yurt for rent a nice little store, and quite a few cabins as well as gazebos and other gathering areas. Wi-fi is horrible even with a booster and sketchy over the air channels.

    Nice little weekend getaway

Stayed 2 nights here. Had a back-in, water/electric spot that was roomy as we were on an end. Wood deck, picnic table, and fire ring included. Very well kept grounds, friendly staff, and all-around good atmosphere.

Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort

    Big rigs to tents

We stayed here for free for 10 days as a part of a promotion that came with the purchase of our rig. Not sure about normal pricing though, as this campground is owned by Venture Out Resorts and they are a timeshare company (we had to sit for a hour long "pitch" to get our free days). They have 50amp, full hookup, pull through sites (and we saw 40+ ft rigs there) to tent camping to cabin rentals. The campground was clean (shower houses always looked great) and grounds were maintained. Amenities include an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna (close at 10p), but we did not partake because it was so overridden by children, chlorine, and no open windows - didn't seem worth any effort whatsoever in the July heat. The amenities we did checkout (close nightly at 8p) included their new 18 hole mini golf course, small arcade (4 games and pinball was broken 😢), loaner bikes, and water toys (we liked the paddle bikes). The company recently bought the property, so you can see what they inherited vs what it will probably eventually be like based off their sister properties (they recently added the putt putt and a big jungle gym) so it could evolve more as time passes. Regardless, in its current state as active 30 somethings, we were pretty bored. No hiking, significant highway noise, yes a couple big ponds, but a truck stop and truck storage is behind both - so no views. Most of the campers we saw were elderly or had young kids. I'd say if you fall into a category where you want to sit beside your rig all day or want your kids entertained (playgrounds, kids programming - it was luau week so they had a Moana movie night and other kid activities), go on and book a longer stay. If you're only looking for a spot to stay overnight by the highway, do it! It is simple to pull in and have full hookups to take advantage of but a 10 day stay is too long if you're paying. Other things to know: Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy. That said truck stop above was very convenient to get into to fuel up our rig too. Fun fact: Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta and the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is also a max 5 min drive away if you want to get your inner astronaut fix.

    Really Well Done

There are cabins, campsites in trees, campsites that aren’t. There’s a nice Mixture of available sites. All the employees are very nice and helpful. They really work hard to maintain the site. The pool is nice. There is a nice play area for kids. They have a short path in the woods which is a nice little loop. Great location with lots to do!

    Buck Creek State Park Campground

    Great quiet site

A well manicured campground just outside Dayton, easy to get to, back in pavement site with 30A electric, picnic table and fire pit. Plenty of potable water spigots around, just not at the site. Dump station near the entrance of the campground. Walking trails along the lake well cared for. Plenty of activity with playground and an outdoor theater. Plenty of water-front pebble beach for enjoyment in the summer. Close to the campground is the marina with a restaurant , but won’t open til Memorial Day.

Addendum: July 2021 - was speaking with a number of people who have been here and they suggest not going during the summer. There is a large influx of rowdy locals who don't quite respect the peace and quiet many of us like.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Lots of sites

Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up. I went to move it and the seat pulled right off. We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn’t packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn’t have any at all. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. The camp store is really big and it’s right next to their pool. They have a dog park, place to dock your boat and a small beach. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer.

Guide to Fort Loramie

Cabin rentals near Fort Loramie, Ohio provide year-round lodging options within western Ohio's relatively flat terrain, where elevations range from 800-900 feet above sea level. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F and winter lows regularly dropping below freezing. Most cabin accommodations in this area sit near one of several reservoir lakes created for flood control during the early 20th century.

What to do

Kayaking on motor-free lakes: Kiser Lake State Park offers a unique paddling experience where no motorized boats are allowed. A camper noted, "This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn't allow any kind of boat with a motor." The park provides canoe and kayak rentals at reasonable prices.

Fishing access: Lake Loramie State Park Campground offers excellent fishing opportunities directly from the campground. "We love being so close to the lake we can fish all the time," reports one visitor. The park features multiple shoreline access points and boat launch facilities.

Mini golf and games: Family-friendly activities are available at several cabin resorts. At Wapakoneta KOA, amenities include "a nice playground, nine hole puttputt, pool and other recreational activities." Many cabin locations maintain activity schedules throughout summer weekends.

Nature trails: Buck Creek State Park offers several hiking options with varying terrain. A visitor commented, "We loved the park for the trails and large areas to ride their bikes." Trail maps are available at most park offices, though signage quality varies between locations.

What campers like

Pool and splash pad: Grand Lake St. Marys State Park offers refreshing water amenities beyond the lake itself. "Great sites, awesome new pool. The campground has a pool, splash pad for kids, playground, putt putt golf, boat docks, hiking trails, and some other great amenities," notes a reviewer.

Quiet locations: Several cabin rental locations provide peaceful settings for those seeking tranquility. One visitor to Kiser Lake described it as a "quiet park" that is "known for the lake." Most parks enforce quiet hours beginning at 10 pm.

Spacious campsites: Cabin areas typically provide more room than standard campsites. At Grand Lake St. Marys, visitors appreciate the "large spacious sites with cement or paved spots." This makes cabin camping more comfortable for extended stays.

Convenience: Cabins near Fort Loramie provide basic amenities with varying levels of comfort. A camper staying at Wapakoneta KOA was "impressed when Mike helped me back into my site.. it had a little wooden deck with a picnic table." These thoughtful touches enhance the cabin camping experience.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Cabin accommodations fill quickly, especially during summer and on weekends. Most parks require advance booking through online reservation systems. A local camper at Lake Loramie State Park mentioned, "We love this campground. It is less than 2 miles away from our home but great events and spaces to get our feet wet when learning new techniques."

Seasonal considerations: While most cabins are available year-round, amenities vary by season. "We went the first weekend in October so they had a lot of families there because they had all sorts of Halloween activities going on," reported a Kiser Lake visitor. Winter cabin stays typically offer fewer organized activities but more solitude.

Varied bathroom facilities: Bathroom quality differs significantly between parks. At Buck Creek State Park, "bathrooms were clean but not spotless and in need of a little repair." Some cabins include private bathrooms while others rely on centralized facilities.

Water quality issues: Some lakes in the region experience algae problems during summer months. At Grand Lake St. Marys, a camper noted, "This lake is notorious for having algae blooms that prohibit swimming." Check with park offices about current water conditions before planning water activities.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly programming: Indian Lake State Park offers structured activities for children, especially during weekends. "Lots of activities for kids and families and even movies and music on the weekend," reports one camper. These programs typically run from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Beach access: Multiple parks provide designated swimming areas ideal for families. At Lake Loramie, "The beach is a bit of a walk from the campground but not too far. They offer canoe rentals, and bike rentals." Some parks have separate swimming beaches for campground guests.

Playground options: When selecting a cabin location with children, consider proximity to play areas. One visitor to Indian Lake appreciated that they "could sit at our spot and watch our kids at the playground." This allows parents to relax while keeping children in sight.

Special events: Seasonal activities enhance family cabin stays. At Lake Loramie, a visitor shared, "We had a great weekend of camping! The weather was perfect, the kids loved the playground and had fun at the Fun Field Day activities!" Many parks schedule themed weekends throughout summer.

Tips from RVers

Delivery services: Natural Springs Resort offers amenities that enhance the cabin camping experience. A reviewer noted they "deliver pizza too!" This is helpful when arriving late or not wanting to cook during your stay.

Supply proximity: Most cabin areas are within short driving distance of shopping. The Wapakoneta KOA is conveniently located as "Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy."

Utility connections: Some cabin facilities provide full hookups for those bringing additional equipment. At Natural Springs Resort, accommodations include "30, 50 amp full hook ups. Water and electric only hook ups, primitive RV and tent sites." This flexibility allows cabin renters to supplement their stay with additional equipment if needed.
