West Branch State Park Campground offers 18 miles of multi-use trails through wooded terrain across 5,000 acres about 25 miles north of Massillon. Most campsites near the water at this park require reservations well in advance, especially during summer weekends when temperatures average 75-85°F. Sites feature varying degrees of slope, with some requiring significant leveling for comfortable tent or trailer setup.
What to do
Horseback riding on extensive trail systems: Near Massillon, Mohican Wilderness provides spacious sites alongside the Mohican River with direct access to multiple riding trails. "We have camped here 3 times now and even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax. Quiet neighbors and friendly staff plus everything is mowed and well maintained," explains a visitor who stayed at site 254.
Family-oriented water recreation: West Branch State Park Campground features multiple swimming areas and boat access directly from campsites. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," notes one camper. The park includes options for kayaking on calm water suitable for beginners, with rentals available seasonally.
Exploration of historic sites: When staying at horse campgrounds near Massillon, Ohio, make time for local historical areas. "There are nice hikes around the creek too. We camp in the primitive site, which is very basic and well taken care of," shares a visitor to Beaver Creek State Park, which includes a pioneer village with original buildings from early Ohio settlement.
What campers like
Secluded waterfront camping options: Salt Fork State Park Campground provides extensive lakefront camping areas with multiple loops offering different levels of privacy. "We drove to Salt Fork from North Carolina on our way to Maumee Bay State Park and the birding festival at Magee March. It was just a quick overnighter, but we did take a little time to walk and bird. The campground was 80% empty, very quiet," reports one visitor.
Clean facilities even in primitive areas: Beaver Creek State Park maintains exceptionally clean pit toilets and grounds at its primitive sites. "Probably the nicest pit toilets I have experienced and while we didn't use it, the sun shower building would give anyone privacy if they had packed a portable shower," notes a recent visitor who enjoyed fishing at the canoe/kayak area in the park.
Spacious sites for larger rigs and equipment: Many equestrian-friendly campgrounds near Massillon feature extra-large sites to accommodate trailers and gear. "They are on a well so there is limited water and they don't allow you to fill up your on board tank. Make sure you fill up before you go! Also, there is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!" advises one camper about Beaver Creek State Park Campground.
What you should know
Limited amenities at some locations: Jefferson Lake State Park Campground offers basic facilities with only five electric sites. "Only 5 electric sites. Very clean pit toilets. Well maintained campground. A few equine sites. Only 2 electric eq sites. Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord," explains one camper.
Seasonal considerations for horse trails: Trail conditions at equestrian campgrounds vary significantly throughout the year. "They also advertise a water filling station but neglected to mention that it is non-potable water so if that's something you're looking for then keep that in mind," notes a visitor to Jefferson Lake State Park.
Cell service variability: Connectivity differs dramatically between parks. "AT&T 5g with 3 bars. Not very many restaurants or grocery nearby. Better make sure you have what you need bf you travel," mentions a Jefferson Lake visitor, while Mohican areas often have limited or no service, requiring advance planning for navigation and communication.
Tips for camping with families
Look for campgrounds with dedicated youth areas: Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground offers multiple play spaces and water activities. "The bike/walking paths for kids/adults is a great addition for campers with young kids. The shower houses are clean as well as the grounds. The lake was high this weekend and the beach was a bit under water, but still fun," shares one family camper.
Consider off-season visits for more space: Family-oriented equestrian campgrounds become significantly less crowded in spring and fall. "We camped this past weekend in site 50. It is an unbelievably spacious site under towering pine trees. The site sits back off the road and really makes you feel like you have the place to yourself," notes a Beaver Creek State Park visitor.
Look for educational opportunities: Several parks offer hands-on learning experiences. "We also did a house tour and learned about who Louis Bromfield was and why he was so important to the area," explains a visitor to Malabar Farm State Park, which features working farm demonstrations and historical displays that complement equestrian activities.
Tips from RVers
Prepare for variable site conditions: Many campgrounds have challenging site configurations. "When first impression we were not impressed with this park. First the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. This was okay for a short weekend but not good planning from who ever designed the park," explains a West Branch State Park visitor.
Research route restrictions: Several parks have specific access limitations. "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!" warns a visitor to Beaver Creek State Park, highlighting the importance of researching approach routes beforehand.
Book early for full-hookup sites: At Mohican State Park Campground, prime sites fill rapidly. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly! Check in is very easy as you pass the camp store on your way in. All campsites have a fire ring and picnic table," advises a regular visitor to the region's equestrian camping areas.
