Jefferson Lake State Park Campground maintains equestrian camping sites with direct access to 18 miles of multi-use trails. The campground includes dedicated horse sites with two electric equestrian spots, though campers note that electrical hookups are positioned some distance behind the pads and may require extension cords. Salt Fork State Park Campground offers wash racks for horses and clean, well-maintained equestrian facilities. Bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly each morning, though the campground does not provide showers. Water is available at non-threaded spigot towers throughout the grounds, requiring campers to manually hold hoses for filling tanks.

The bridle trails at Jefferson Lake are particularly suitable for day rides, connecting riders to scenic wooded areas and creek crossings. Horse owners should come prepared with all necessary supplies, as there are limited restaurants and grocery options near the park. Salt Fork's trails accommodate all experience levels, with access points near camping areas. Most equestrian sites are relatively flat and shaded, though some tent areas have slopes that require careful placement. Horse trailer parking is available at both parks, with Jefferson Lake offering more secluded camping while Salt Fork tends to be busier during peak seasons. The changing autumn leaves provide excellent views for fall trail riding at Salt Fork, though campers should check for ticks after rides.

      Salt Fork State Park Campground

      Park is Great, Campsites Suck!

Stayed here in the “primitive” camp. You are basically staying with your neighbors in small cleared areas where you can see everything everyone else is doing and if you have one of the sites nearer to the parking areas, you will have people walking through your campsite all day and night from the ones in the rear. From what I saw, the electric sites in the main campground aren’t much better. I mean this is a midwestern state park camping experience for sure. If you’re expecting any amount of privacy, think again.

The lake is pretty beautiful. The trails are well marked and the horse trails go on for miles and miles so if you have horses this is a great place to trail ride and if you’re a hiker who is not afraid of horses, you can always enjoy the equestrian trails for some serious mileage!

      Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

      Great Campground

Lots of great sites to pick from, lots of loops, shady sites , secluded sites, handicap sites and more. We go at least once a year for the Ohio Bigfoot Conference which draws people from all over the country. The bathrooms are good, the shower houses are good and the campground store has anything you may have forgotten. Friendly staff, hiking trails, boating and more. They have horse camping and trails further down the road and a primitive loop on Bigfoot Ridge. So much to see and do a weekend isn't long enough.

      Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet and Beautiful

This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites. There are no showers, but the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly ever morning. You need to be careful when booking, especially if you are trying to pitch a tent, as some sites are quite sloped. Our site was huge and right next to the water spigot.

      Awesome Horse Trails

Miles of well groomed horse trails available with creek crossings, steep hills and beautiful pine tree. There’s a primitive horse camp as well, and places to tie horses at the entrance with high lines. Dogs are welcome to.

      Mohican State Park Campground

      Unexpected Treat in Central Ohio

As part of a nearly 200-mile bikepacking ride, this was our last stop! We spent 2 nights in their "Class B" area down in the Mohican River Valley and loved it.

The oddly named “Class A” camping area offers everything from full-hook up camping slots for campers large and small, as well as just electric sites and 10 “walk-in” primitive sites, and cabins -- all of which are reservable. This area has all the bells and whistles of a modern campground with an environmental learning center, a nice outdoor pool, clean showers and bathrooms, an extensive playground and hiking and mountain biking trails right out the front door.

The “Class B” area offers 25 primitive sites on a first-come, first-served basis. It is almost 6 miles by road from the “A” services, but only a 2-mile flatish hike along the river trail. At these sites, there are only pit toilets and a water pump. Each site has a picnic table and a small fire ring. There is also a large group camping area just a few miles away from the primitive “Class B” area.

Tubing and canoeing are available within the park, but there are also several canoe outfitters in the area which provide rental / pick up services. The sheer number of these businesses makes me think that summer time can be crowded!!

Beautiful shaded trails meander all throughout the park and they boast some of the most challenging mountain biking in the mid-west, so read your trail maps. Hiking, equestrian and winter snowmobile trails also offer some great opportunities to get out and stretch your legs throughout the year. There is also a safe and convenient, bike lane / bike path into nearby Loudonville, which has a small grocery story and the usual fast-food restaurants.

Note: The only reason why this park didn't get a 5 star was due to their customer service. It was absolutely lousy, confusing, and the young folks working behind the counter acted as if they didn't want to be there and/or hadn't been trained. We almost left, but since we had cycled 42 miles to get there that day, we chose to stay and enjoyed our time in their Class B sites.

      Mohican State Park Campground

      Park and pack site #4

Near the bridal trails you'll find Park and Pack site #4. It's a great spot if your legs are tired after a long day of hiking or if you did too many hills that day. Or if you're a beginner camper, or family that want to try something new, it's easy to walk into and out of. You'll find campsite #4 near the horse pavilion and a large wood barn where it looks that wood is provided. The trail itself is flat, wide and conditions depend on recent rainfall and horse use. It was mostly dry with some muddy areas to navigate around. You'll need to transport it back to camp somehow by pack or a cart/wheelbarrow... It has creative man made benches from logs/branches, a great view for sunset. Per paper maps it looks like it's among the other campsites but actually it's on its own and the opposite side of the multiple bridal trailhead.

    Guide to Bolivar

Equestrian camping near Bolivar, Ohio offers access to over 100 miles of trails across multiple parks within a 60-mile radius. Located in the foothills of Appalachia, the area's terrain varies from gentle meadows to moderate hills with elevations between 800-1200 feet. Fall temperatures typically range from 40-65°F while summer averages 65-85°F with moderate humidity.

    What to do

Trail riding along creek crossings: At Mohican State Park Campground, riders can access multiple water features. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve, no reservations," notes John H.

Fishing from shoreline access: West Branch State Park Campground offers multiple waterfront sites with direct lake access. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," reports Katelyn P. West Branch provides both calm inlets for beginners and deeper water for experienced anglers.

Exploring historic sites: The region contains several pioneer-era structures accessible from trails. "Caves to be explored that are easy to access. Boating, fishing, hunting, swimming and a well appointed Salt Fork Lodge. Short drive to Cambridge, Ohio to enjoy local downtown," mentions JH T.

    What campers like

Shower facilities with privacy: Campers consistently mention the comfort of individual shower stalls. "Clean individual showers," notes Dan M. about West Branch State Park. The shower buildings at several parks include amenities not mentioned in the standard descriptions.

Nighttime wildlife sounds: Beaver Creek State Park Campground offers a unique soundscape after dark. "The sky was dark enough to see far more stars than you'd see near any larger towns or cities. To cap it off, we laid in our tent dozing off to the sounds of owls and coyotes!" writes Matt H.

Fall foliage viewing: October brings peak color conditions to the area. "The change of season brings a very different atmosphere to the park and the people staying in it. The facilities are still well maintained and the washer and dryer I'm pretty sure are older then me but they do the job," explains Shelly S.

    What you should know

Limited cell coverage: Many equestrian areas have minimal service. "No cell service with Verizon at this park," reports Andrea F. about Mohican State Park. Plan communications accordingly, especially if coordinating with multiple riders.

Water access variations: Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground requires specific equipment for water. "Low energy because of the amount of seasonal campers at this campground. They stay to themselves and do not get too social," notes Korinne K. Bring containers with threaded openings if staying at parks with non-standard spigots.

Seasonal changes to sites: Water levels fluctuate significantly throughout the year. "Fun times during Covid-19 on Memorial Day Weekend. The bike/walking paths for kids/adults is a great addition for campers with young kids. The lake was high this weekend and the beach was a bit under water, but still fun," explains Tina D.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground equipment quality: Hidden Hollow Campground offers basic facilities for children. "Free for a reason? We needed a place to crash after traveling all day and knew it was going to be a quick turnaround so we stumbled upon this campsite. It served its purpose as it allowed us to rest for the night," notes Jacqueline F.

Trail difficulty ratings: Younger riders need appropriate paths. "We camp here several times a year. Nice trails, good fishing, clean pool, boat rental - always fun no matter the season," shares Gretchen R. Most parks provide clear signage about trail challenges and length.

Safety considerations: Tick prevention is essential, even in cooler months. "TICK WARNING!!!! After a morning hike down wooded Trail, we spent A LONG TIME pulling ticks from dogs...even though the temps were in the 30's overnight and everyone was treated with flea & tick protection," warns Staci R.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday offers mixed terrain. "Took the family there and loved it. It's clean and quiet. Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly. Would def recommend anyone to go," reports Bradley B.

Extension cord needs: Power post locations vary widely between equestrian sites. "Mostly gravel site..heavy construction where patio sites are. They're not open. Very nosy machinery during the day we are here. Stepped up hill gravel sites," notes Rick K. Bring a minimum 25-foot extension cord to ensure connectivity.

Weather-related site challenges: Drainage issues occur at several parks after heavy rain. "Severe Sloping Site Won't Keep Us From Having Fun. On first impression we were not impressed with this park. First the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full," shares Andrea F.
