Indian Lake State Park Campground sits 1,079 feet above sea level in Ohio's glaciated region, where the terrain features rolling hills and natural lakes formed by receding glaciers. Located 20 miles from Bellefontaine, this region experiences warm, humid summers and cool winters with occasional lake effect weather patterns that can impact camping conditions.
What to do
Water sports rentals: At Delaware State Park Campground, visitors can enjoy multiple water activities without bringing their own equipment. "The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded. We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake," shares Nancy W.
Shooting sports: Cardinal Center Campground offers comprehensive shooting facilities just a short drive from camping areas. "They have a nice indoor pool and shower rooms attached. Also a shooting range if that is something you like. Definitely a nice family place," notes Andrea F. The center includes archery, pistol, and rifle ranges for various skill levels.
Disc golf course: Buck Creek State Park has an 18-hole disc golf course within the park boundaries that's free to use. "There are a lot of things to do in the area. We visited the Ohio Caverns. The tour is worth the money, the 'gem' mining was fun for our younger kids," explains Leon H. The park's diverse terrain makes for challenging disc golf play.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers tent sites with good separation between neighbors. "We camped here in our camper in early July 2017. The campground is clean and overall a good value. It was a busy weekend but not as loud as I figured it would be," notes Leon H. Many sites feature natural borders of trees and shrubs.
Indoor amenities: Glamping close to Bellefontaine, Ohio often includes access to climate-controlled facilities. "They have an indoor pool, stocked fishing pond, and an indoor clubhouse with a pool table," explains Renee L. about Cardinal Center Campground. These indoor options provide comfort during inclement weather.
Fishing access: Multiple glamping locations near Bellefontaine provide stocked fishing ponds. "Indian Lake State Park is my close to home camping get away. Right on Indian lake, you can enjoy the beach, boating, swimming, fishing and relaxing," shares Angie B. Most locations have shore fishing options accessible from camping areas.
What you should know
Site selection matters: At Alum Creek State Park Campground, the layout significantly impacts your experience. "The camp sites are spacious and private, surrounded by trees and brush. Beautiful walking trails. There's a small beach within the campground, a bigger public beach a short drive away," explains Catherine. The most desirable lakefront sites are often booked by seasonal campers.
Seasonal water quality: Some lakes in the region experience algae issues during summer months. "This lake is notorious for having algae blooms that prohibit swimming," notes Megan M. about Grand Lake St. Marys. Contact park offices before planning water activities during peak summer months.
Mosquito preparation: Wooded sites can have significant insect activity, especially after rainfall. "Despite the weather, our experience was still not the greatest one, the trail was confusing and we were eaten alive by mosquitos, even with bug spray," cautions Mandi B. Bring multiple types of repellent for different conditions.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: When glamping with children near Bellefontaine, select sites near play areas. "The camping spot was great. It was very close to the pool and playground. The sites were pull through which was nice for having young kids. Could sit at our spot and watch our kids at the playground," shares Chad W. about Grand Lake St. Marys State Park.
Educational opportunities: Several parks offer nature programs specifically for children. "We have been camping at Indian lake since I was a child, now we our kids there. There is a sand beach for swimming (even a separate doggy beach!) or a new in-ground pool. Primitive to full hook-up sites available," explains Jamie L.
Weather backup plans: Have indoor options prepared for rainy days. "We went the weekend it was Fall fest. Plenty of activities for the kids! Trick or treat, glow parade, decorate your own pumpkin, etc!" says Kelly L. about Cardinal Center Campground. Many sites offer seasonal programming during summer and fall.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Some sites require significant leveling equipment. "Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn't have any at all," notes Shannon G. about Indian Lake State Park Campground. Bring extra leveling blocks for sites near water.
Winter camping options: Several locations near Bellefontaine offer year-round RV camping. "We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn't packed. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer," adds Shannon G. Off-season camping provides quieter experiences with fewer booking challenges.
Full hookup availability: Wapakoneta KOA offers complete RV services with helpful staff. "Had a back-in, water/electric spot that was roomy as we were on an end. Wood deck, picnic table, and fire ring included. Very well kept grounds, friendly staff, and all-around good atmosphere," explains Ryan W. Their pull-through sites accommodate larger rigs with slideouts.
