West Branch State Park Campground and Canton/East Sparta KOA Holiday provide equestrian camping options within 22 miles of Green, Ohio. The area's rolling terrain varies from 900 to 1,300 feet in elevation, creating diverse trail conditions for riders throughout the seasons. Trail access directly from campsites allows horse owners to explore woodland areas without trailering their animals between riding locations.
What to do
Explore lake activities: At West Branch State Park Campground, campers can enjoy water-based recreation beyond the bridle trails. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The lake is an all sport lake so there is fishing, tubing, jet skis and kayaking. The marina has boat rentals available," notes Alisa G.
Visit the Mohican area: The Mohican Wilderness campground provides river access for water recreation. "We go every year and do the 20 mile kayaking trip, such a nice little spot along the river & the best way to kick off summer!" says Lexi K. The campground is located about 45 miles southwest of Green.
Experience pioneer history: At Beaver Creek State Park Campground, visitors can explore historical sites. "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc)," writes Shay D.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Equestrian campgrounds typically offer larger sites to accommodate horses and gear. At Mohican Wilderness, "the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax. Quiet neighbors and friendly staff plus everything is mowed and well maintained," according to Andrea F.
Lake views: Many campers appreciate waterfront access. "We're at site 160. No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site. We're in a self contained RV so it's not a problem for us. Beach is right next door too!" reports Rino S. from West Branch State Park.
Clean facilities: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground, located about 37 miles northeast of Green, maintains high standards. "The shower houses are clean as well as the grounds. The lake was high this weekend and the beach was a bit under water, but still fun," writes Tina D.
What you should know
Site selection challenges: When booking at equestrian campgrounds, consider terrain. "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches," shares Andrea F. about West Branch State Park.
Water access limitations: At Jefferson Lake State Park Campground, located about 66 miles east of Green, "They also advertise a water filling station but neglected to mention that it is non-potable water so if that's something you're looking for then keep that in mind," warns Alex S.
Cell service variability: Connectivity varies by location. At Mohican Wilderness, one camper noted: "We didn't have any cell service but I was not expecting it. It was great to be screen free for a couple days," while Mohican State Park reports "No cell service with Verizon at this park."
Tips for camping with families
Look for kid-friendly amenities: Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground, about a 42-mile drive from Green, offers numerous activities. "There are two basketball courts on either side of the park and a few playgrounds. The bike/walking paths for kids/adults is a great addition for campers with young kids," notes Tina D.
Consider beach access: Families enjoy water play options. At Mosquito Lake, a camper noted: "Nice playground with toy stocked sandpit, volleyball net... Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek."
Book early for holidays: Holiday weekends fill quickly, especially at equestrian campgrounds. "We arrived Friday late afternoon and set up in the rain. Didn't see much of the park on Friday, but Saturday we went exploring and saw the marina, beach, horse camp area, and walked some of the bridle trails," shares Andrea F. about Pleasant Hill.
Tips from RVers
Prepare for leveling challenges: Some horse camping areas have uneven sites. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," reported one West Branch camper.
Check hookup locations: At Jefferson Lake, "Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord. All water full up towers only have those spigots that are not threaded. Had to hold hose over spigot about 20 min to fill 35 gal," advises Eddie.
Consider seasonal variations: Weather impacts RV camping conditions. "There are many seasonal sites but plenty of transient as well. We have stayed mostly in area E and the new F side of the campground. The new F sites have concrete pads and plenty of space. Only lacking in mature trees to offer shade," notes Michelle H. about Pleasant Hill.
